ויהי בימי אחשוורוש…

פורים שמח וצום קל לכולם !

Taking a break from my usual minhag of drawing a comic page for Purim just because I was so inspired by Alphonse Mucha lol!

How many symbolic details can you spot?

This card really gets to me because if a friend gave me this for pesach, I wouldn't have a friend 😭

[Video Description: An Instagram reel by user @midrashmanicures (Rabbi Yael Buechler). Buechler is holding up a greeting card which features artwork of a slice of pizza and text reading in cursive font. Buechler says, "I'm Yael Buechler and here at CVS, I'm wondering why this Hallmark card is different than all others." The text on the card reads "At Passover, remember...".

Buechler opens the card, which plays the song Can't Touch This (MC Hammer). Artwork on the inside of the card features a croissant, doughnut, soft pretzel, slice of pizza, and a challah (all of which are all dancing with joyous mockery) /End of Description]

Others shouted insults, including at children. One man called neighborhood residents “filthy Zionist assholes,” and a woman shouted at a pair of young girls watching from a crosswalk, saying, “You’re so gross. You’re disgusting.” Children on their way home from neighborhood yeshivas peered out their bus windows at the scene.

I feel like the part where you yell at Jews to leave where they live in NYC, calling them disgusting, and harassing children, is the part where your mask falls off.

"settlers go back home" screamed at Jews living in Brooklyn as some kind of pro-palestinian activism is....wild. sorry they want the Jews living in Brooklyn to go back home to ...........?

I'm learning that a lot of people really don't take ethics very seriously

I don't like that

Ethical principles still have to hold in the face of tragedy and evil deeds.

Human rights can't be obfuscated by redefining who gets to be human. There is a difference between holding the guilty to account, and group punishment by assumed association.

It can feel intuitive to justify the latter when overwhelmed, but we can't simply do what feels right.

Bring them home, remove Hamas from power, put those believed to be guilty on trial wherever possible... Don't endorse collective punishment and revenge.

the news from last night really went under the radar in the jumblr tag, but i want to emphasis that hamas wanted us to start the morning with the absence of shiri's body, then have at least 5 buses explode at 9 and 10 am with bombs planted by hamas' tulkarem brigade (from the west bank), which probably would've killed dozens of people.

those buses exploded empty, in their parking lots, last night, by complete fucking luck, because the timers were set to 9-10pm instead of am. (to be precise, 3 exploded and burnt completely, and 2 were found parked with bombs in them.)

Updated version of Boy Who Cried Wolf but there are actual wolves every single time and no one ever believes the boy - they get closer and closer every time he tries to warn them, until it's too late and the whole town screams at the boy for not warning them "enough", and blame him for the wolves at their door.

my family wasn't this strict, but in some sects of buddhism you're not allowed to eat the "five pungent vegetables", onions garlic shallots leeks and umm chives i think, really any of those kind of vegetables. probably some monk ages ago was tired of onion farts stinking up the temple. anyways, one time my brother made a soup using all five of them. he said, "one sip of this, and you'll be reincarnated as a flea."

so. american jews. ...is this "My Go bags are refreshed and packed," or is it "start making serious plans to leave the country"?

If you didn't worry since the Hamas attack on Simchat Torah, which was celebrated in the US, denied, excused and widely called to be repeated - then you really have nothing to worry about

what a deeply unhelpful and unnecessary comment to make

Why? Let me explain what I see: Starting on October 7th, there was an EXPLOSION of antisemitism in the US (and around the world). People celebrated the fall of Israel, while at the same time denying that ANY of the grotesque acts actually happened.

Jewish women were denied the right to even claim they were mass raped.

And yet - when do I see an EXPLOSION of people caring about antisemitism on Tumblr?

When Trump was elected.

Trump finally did the most basic thing any American politician should have done on October 8th - and took concrete steps to make sure that American universities will deal with their antisemitic students.

It's finally not okay to say that calling for the genocide of Jews might be against the law Or to do nothing when a student tells university officials that all Zionists should be killed. Or to say "I understand your truth", when people say Jews are the new Nazis. I would have been glad to see Biden do it. I expected him to act.

But he didn't. American Jews on Tumblr rushed to explain why Trump should not have done this So, yes. You asked specifically about American Jews -

if you didn't seriously consider leaving the country during the most dangerous time for American Jews for decades probably because you felt safe enough

I don't see why you should worry now.

I'm sorry you think that's unhelpful.

You need to seriously think whether what's bothering you is antisemitism and the fear that somebody will hurt you as a Jew.

Or the idea that Trump is in the White House

Because I think that's what's worrying most Jews here.

Trump pardoned a ton of white supremacists, and let Nazi salute-wielding Elon Musk bring actual neo-Nazis into government building, and now unelected, unvetted , unhired white supremacists currently have the social security numbers of every Jew in the USA

And "antisemitism-eu" is here to tell us that Trump has not been antisemitic in public for decades in the US, and that for Zionism reasons we shouldn't recognize him as a source of deeply violent antisemitism. It's not like the Charlottesville March in 2016 had guys (who are now being promoted by Trump's administration) shouting "Jews Will Not Replace Us" or anything

Naw, this all started on October 7th of 2023, and American Jews are just bigoted against Trump or something

If you do not understand that people in the current administration are blaming Jews for the existence of trans people (an argument identical to the one that caused the first ever Nazi book burning-- of Jewish professor of sexology Magnus Hirschfeld's institute) and are promoting and hiring white nationalists who only want to murder Jews slightly less than they want to murder Black and Latino ppl , you are willfully blind to antisemitism in the US, and you should stick to your fucking continent.

bruh, in 2016 I had jewish elders discussing the obvious white supremacists emboldened by Trump-- who KILLED A WOMAN COUNTERPROTESTING-- and that they expected we'd have to start packing in the next decade. Fuck off with your bullshit October 7th narrative, American Jews know who wants them dead and is currently empowered to harm our community, along with millions of others.

Precisely.

Also Like FIRST OF ALL, I'm a Chicana. The fact is that Trump's hatred of Mexicans and Mexican Americans *does* impact me and my family, and the only reason I'm not in any personal immediate danger is a) I'm light skinned/half white and b) no longer living in a border state like the rest of my family.

So to be perfectly fucking clear, as a Mexican American woman, I am EXTREMELY ALARMED. I know DAMN WELL in American history that the US has deported actual united states citizens and legal residents who were Mexican before, I expect they are going to be doing it again now. I've seen reports they're even rounding up native Americans. To deport fucking WHERE??? They're Native to THIS LAND.

But this is my Jewish blog, about being Jewish. So I spoke about antisemitism. But just to spell it out for @antisemitism-eu, I am mexican-american and Donald Trump's anti-latinx racism terrifies me and is a real and present threat.

Anyways this whole Donald Trump propaganda bullshit antisemitism-eu is riding in on is fucking wild. I guess I'm supposed to be soooo grateful the Donald did something about student protests but totally forget when he had a messianic Christian speak in memory of the Pittsburgh mass shooting victims.

Also come off it lol how the fuck would someone in the EU know that post 10/7 was "the most dangerous time for Jews" when AGAIN, the murder of 11 Jews happened when Trump was last president?

Hello???

This is some completely unrelated argument that has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. I'm not talking about the american political discourse in regards to 10/7. I'm talking about the systematic attempts at destruction of the American government by unelected oligarchs who are antisemitic and transphobic weirdos. I'm talking about the rounding up and intimidation of fellow Latinos and I'm talking about the fact that musk flashing a zeig heil on INAUGURATION DAY is fucking bonkers.

Better? I started blogging about antisemitism in 2013. So I guess I know nothing about it.

Re-read your statement, and tells me what it has to do with antisemitism. You write "as a Mexican American woman, I am EXTREMELY ALARMED"

But you didn't write to your fellow Latinos.

You wrote to your fellow Jews I cannot describe how depressing it is, after almost a year and a half of antisemitic onslaughts on Jews all over the world, after the most horrible attack on Jews in almost a century - to open Tumblr one day and discover that NOW Jews are worried, because NOW Trump is in office. But again, what do I know.

You are putting a lot of words in my mouth I didn't say on the vague monolith of [other] "American Jews."

It's insufferable.

  1. 11 dead Jews last time trump was in office is directly related to antisemitism
  2. I didn't just "suddenly" become concerned, you're projecting a narrative you have created out of straw-jews.
  3. To be even MORE clear: i am currently considering what to do if the worst happens because my dad died last year, and I received life insurance money. so now I have the financial ability to leave the country, whereas I did not before. This has nothing to do with "I wasn't worried before" because I didn't say I had "zero concerns before."
  4. YOU made this about Zionism and 10/7. YOU made this about Biden. YOU implied that I thought everything was totally fine before now. YOU are the one overlooking that I have multiple identities to be concerned about and YOU are the one questioning what a mass shooting at a synagogue under Trump's last admin has to do with antisemitism.
  5. Yes, 10/7 was the largest deadly attack against Jews since the end of WWII. But the most deadly attack against American Jews on AMERICAN SOIL happened during Trump's LAST ADMINISTRATION. You seem to not understand this. You seem to have, perhaps, forgotten that eleven Jews were murdered and 6 were injured and this was the biggest attack against American Jews in the history of the United States. And it happened under Donald Trump and his aggressively right wing nationalist rhetoric and now he's back in office and his buddy is throwing up a heil Hitler on inauguration day MULTIPLE TIMES. 10/7 was a deadly attack on Jews IN ISRAEL. I happen to live in America.
  6. I really don't know how to explain to you that levels of increased worry regarding immediate violence is actually different from the stress of rhetorical disgust or hatred. Neither of these things are positive but I do rank "possibility someone will murder me," as a bigger problem than "people say mean shit about zionists or stupidly verbalize approval for things/groups they don't understand and don't actually materially support."
  7. I don't know how to explain to you that you actually have to read what I said in full: "this is my Jewish blog about being Jewish, so I wrote about antisemitism." So....
  8. "now Jews are worried" no one said anything about having NO concerns before EXCEPT YOU.
  9. I think it's really fucking depressing that you're comparing post 10/7 reactions and occasional violence and asserting it's more dangerous than the time someone murdered 11 Jews at synagogue in the US when Donald Trump was president.
  10. Actually fuck it: as a Jew in Delaware, I'm really truly annoyed you seem to think you might have a better idea or insight about how Biden treats the American Jewish community. When I play Jewish geography I am literally one degree away from Biden because I've met and taken classes with the Rabbi that he has had the closest local relationship to, as "his" rabbi to tap for these things. I know way more about Biden's long time relationship with the local Jewish community who were his constituents for decades than you do. Do not try to tell me that Biden didn't condemn antisemitism during protests because he fucking did. Do not tell me he said nothing, when it was ALSO part of his speech last year During the days of Remembrance. Don't tell me his presidency was worse for American Jews when Biden told us he ran for office partly because of the Charlottesville protests under trump, where trump called the proud boys chanting "Jews will not replace us," a "very nice" group. Because Biden saw the rising antisemitism and was concerned enough to have that help push him to run for office.

Stick to Europe if you are going to say completely wrong shit about the United States.

I don't understand - Either you think Trump as president is much much worse for Jews than the past year of antisemitism or not. I think it's not (I'll try to explain below)

You think it is. And you're getting upset at me because

a. how dare I say you think that way

and

b. of course it's this way

you spend a lot of time telling me why Trump is so much more dangerous to Jews (and how dare anybody who deals with antisemitism for over a decade tell you anything about it )

Just to clear up that last point, because you accuse me of "putting things into your mouth" and then you do the exact same thing to me: I didn't say that Biden didn't condemn antisemitism. Of course, he did. I said that Trump took steps against antisemitism that should have been done a long time ago Biden didn't do anything against antisemites (and frankly, actively encouraged them) and thereby made the lives of American Jews that much more unsafe.

I realize you don't really care, but here's why I think Progressive antisemitism is much, more worse.

When you said "expected Biden to act" that was what I was addressing. That specific thing. That you DID say. Then now you're saying Biden encouraged antisemites as if literally anything he has ever done has been anywhere NEAR the levels of encouraging antisemitism that is "allowing a guy to heil Hitler multiple times during his inauguration."

Anyways you've completely derailed my post to say a bunch of bullshit.

"progressive antisemitism is much more worse"

Bless your heart, but IN THE UNITED STATES, radicalized conservatives & white supremacists have a body count that is much higher than liberal antisemitism. Again: the deadliest attack in the US against American Jews happened under Donald Trump. You keep speaking down to me like I don't know the country that I fucking live in.

You are talking from "a decade of experience dealing with antisemitism" and I am talking from a lifetime of living in the United States and understanding radicalized conservatives that live here. You're talking from running a blog, and I'm talking from attending a triple funeral after a white supremacist on an FBI watch list murdered my friend's family well before Trump. (So when Trump shares ideologies with THAT guy, I am concerned!).

Maybe, perhaps, you could, idk, grant that I might have some VALID and experienced views on the reality I currently live in, and that you don't.

Maybe, idk, you could fucking listen to an american Jew telling you about their lived experience instead of euro-splaining your opinions at me.

Also frankly, the contortions and gymnastics you did under that cut is absolutely wild. "Progressive Nazis" ok hon maybe if Israel doesn't want to be accused of a genocide then they shouldn't fucking bomb another ethno-nation to smithereens for a year straight.

Am I supposed to think that someone (possibly incorrectly) calling a mass slaughter of civilians of a single ethnic group due to military action "genocide" is equivalent to being an actual honest to God Nazi?

Because I fucking don't.

Like "uM, well ACTUALLY,,, it's not genocide, it's just sparkling ethnic cleansing! Implying otherwise makes you a progressive Nazi!" Doesn't really hit the way you think it does.

I recently got an on-campus job. During the interview process, I requested that I not be scheduled on Friday nights or Saturdays as I am a Jewish student.

My boss immeadiately brightened and rushed to explain - "Of course ! Of course! We want to accomodate you! We have another worker who takes off for Ramadan. Do you need to take off for Ramadan?"

I shook my head, incredibly confused. "Uh. That's. Not my jurisdiction. I'm good." Boss nodded but was sure to add "Let me know if that ever changes. We can help you with Ramadan."

@vangoggles THAT WHAT I WAS SAYING .

And I was finally on a shift with this guy. We were both sitting in silence because we had the ass-crack-of-dawn slot.

Over my coffee and twirling my Magen David necklace around my finger, I say "So. Ahmed. Ramadan.

And Ahmed over his energy drink, sighs - "don't you say shit about that."

Ok so the ICE arrests of US citizens and veterans of Hispanic descent.

Read Between Dignity and Despair by Marion Kaplan. Because this is part of a process called “social death.” We already have high level dehumanizing and quasi-genocidal rhetoric about Latinx Americans. We have internment camps. Now we have the Trump Admin and its just-following-orders ICE enforcers arresting citizens.

“Social death” is the process by which a group of citizens has its identity as lawful and ideological citizens questioned to such an extent that it becomes normalized among the “fits ideological notions of citizenship” group to view them as an inherently foreign Other before anyone starts revoking citizenship.

And we’re already ass deep into that process.

The USA is not a country in which ANYONE should feel as though they have to carry their citizenship/naturalization papers on them. That is not normal, and you cannot let the media normalize it.

Also, read Imagined Communities.

I want to add that this is a case of American history repeating itself -- the largest orchestrated coerced repatriation/deportation/expulsion in U.S. history happened to the Mexican American community from 1929-1939. Estimates are that 60% of the people deported were American citizens, and the majority of people deported were children.

And total estimates for the "Decade of Betrayal" (sometimes called the great mexican repatriation) are somewhere between 300,000-2 million people were deported. (I think the best number is probably somewhere between 400,000-1 million roughly, but it's really hard to say.)

This mostly was enacted by states and private companies, and not so much federally, as trump is now trying to do, but it was successful because people looked the other way, because people wanted mexican-americans gone. i have to believe protests against this kind of move to mass deport latinos actually will help. when they did it before in this country, people didn't really protest it.

In less dramatic news, due to...unavoidable plane scheduling....is there a way to get a passover plate delivered to LAX airport on the 12th?

I land at 11 am and leave LAX again at 3:50 but don't end up back home until midnight.

Time zone wise I leave Japan at 5 pm (before sunset at 6:12) on the 12th and I can request a kosher meal for the flight but I don't think they'll be serving KLP lol. And then I land at LAX at 11 the 12th, but take off again before sunset and don't get home until after sunset.

I know you're supposed to go based on the place you left, but if I did this I would be stuck in a three day time loop of the first two nights of Passover because I'll be experiencing April 12th for two days. Also again, that leaves me at the mercy of Japanese airline food.

I don't want to attempt to pack matzot in my suitcase for a long trip either 😂 so the possibilities are basically like.

1) start Passover in the air from japan

2) obtain KLP food in LA(??) / LAX to eat while flying

3) eat...midnight Seder by myself? Bc if I count from when I leave LAX, I will have landed before sundown there, but it will be after midnight back home. Then the problem just becomes where do I obtain and have it delivered while I am not there.
