The original phrase appears to be kallokeli, in which kallo or kalla (from Swedish kall, kalla, kalle) refers to ice. The modern term pääkallokeli was therefore created as a misunderstanding because kallo in kallokeli similar to the word pääkallo (lit. "head skull").
Keli in Finnish means "weather condition".
