“Abortion is empowering women”

How many times do we have to say this? Abortion hurts women.

Friendly reminder that the APA regularly denies the existence of abortion trauma. Not “some women experience distress, others do not,” but full on denial and gaslighting. They straight up claim that abortion trauma is not real. For years before they made that stance, even pro-choice psychologists were discussing “post-abortion stress syndrome.” This is not a made up phenomena as a result of societal shaming but an expected response to a deadly and invasive procedure. Anyone who is post-abortive deserves access to safe, validating mental health care (yes, even the pro-choice ones!!! This shit is literally lethal, I don’t want more people to die).

Abortion trauma is real. I have lived it. Even when at the time of my abortions I thought I had made the right choice because everyone told me it was. It wasn't a choice I was happy with but at that time, I thought it was what I had to do.

The mental and emotional fall out from my abortions wreaked havoc on my life. I lost myself completely. I became extremely depressed and suicidal. I started doing drugs and drinking heavily. Before my first abortion I had been a relatively average teenager. Some angst and maybe mild depression. After I fell apart completely. I completely degraded myself and felt worthless. By the time of my second abortion I was a shadow of a person who's whole purpose in life was to escape myself.

Now every year I have to manage the depression that comes in October. Both my abortions happened in October. Its a very hard month to get through. I can't drive past the abortion clinic without being filled with anxiety. When I finally was able to get pregnant and keep my son, the extreme mental emotional ptsd sent me into regular hysterics. The extreme guilt and pain and regret. I had horrible postpartum depression and cried constantly over the babies I had lost.

But my trauma isn't real according to them. My pain, the damage that was done to me doesn't exist I guess.

They don't care about you. They don't give you follow up care. They don't tell you what to do when you get home and the first thing you want to do is kill yourself. It's not safe. It's not normal.

Cats actually can tell babies are little humans and as a general rule of thumb they tend to go easier on babies and will tolerate more behaviors they usually do not tolerate in adults. Not only that but many cats can become overprotective of babies and show them a lot of affection. Or if they hate babies they will just hide and run away instead of attacking. Obviously exceptions exist, but I find this proclivity to be so heartwarming
