DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN ↳1x09 Straight to Hell

Oh I just noticed this! When Karen gets out of the car and Frank is looking at her so intently, Matt turns his head to focus on Frank cause he picked up Frank's love-struck heartbeat. And the next thing Matty does is make sure that Frank gets the back seat, further away from Karen, while he gets the front. "SHOTGUN" 😂

DD:BA Episode 9 OK... I do have more thoughts. First of all, the good things: The scene in the hospital! Call me vindictive, but I dislike Heather so much (and love Karen) that I stood up and cheered when Matt uttered Karen's name first and then proceeded to dismiss Heather because Heather just Didn't Get It. That smirk when Matt walked into his apartment and realised that Frank was there (and, of course it was Karen who called Frank! That was bleeding obvious!) The banter beforehand, the sarcasm, the flipped bird - that was everything that we all ever wanted from Matt and Frank working together. The brutality of the fight. AND the fact that Matt did not even try to interfere with Frank once Frank started killing really showed that Matt himself has lost a lot of his idealism once he pushed Bullseye off the roof. Yes, he still objects to killing a man who is no longer a threat, but not those who have guns and bullet-proof vests and a Kingpin's licence to kill. Yet Matt still has a line. And Frank pushes him towards that line... but not really. As in S2, Frank does not want Matt to become a killer. Frank is the killer. Frank is happy to kill for Matt when Matt can't. Frank is happy to be the asshole. Oh... and all those cops are dead, whether Matt wanted them dead or not. They are crispy-fried. Unfortunately, so are Matt's vinyls :( "SHOTGUN!!" Of course Matt wants to sit right next to Karen while she drives the getaway vehicle.

Frank... just wanting to spend time with Matt and Karen after a successful mission. Just a piece of human warmth in his armoury. Matt understood it (though, what's with the oat milk, Matt? Age catching up to you? You lactose intolerant now?). But Karen... I think she understood it too, but her heart and concern are for Matt. And then there is Frank's puppy face when looking at Karen. I think that's the first time we've actually seen Frank make that sort of vulnerable face. Of course he loves her (a nod to kastle fans here; this entire episode is basically one big fan service). So many karedevil scenes! One after the other. So many conversations that we wanted them to have, but had to write ourselves in fics! There they are! In-jokes and reminiscences (Avocados at law!!) Karen asking Matt about heartbeats and what he could read from them hoping that he understood her (as opposed to feeling humiliated by his insight). And Karen telling Matt that both Foggy and her recognise the "wrath and the mercy" warring inside of him, both indelible components of who he is. Lawyer and vigilante - all loved, all cherished. All supported. And Matt listened to her! He did not go diving headlong into a suicide mission. He has a direction now, and the need to save the city. But more than that. He knows he is loved, and he knows he is fully known and accepted. He is NOT ALONE. Not anymore. And now he has the beginnings of a fighting force (and a steady supply of booze courtesy of Josie, which will be needed if Jessica and Luke join the party next season!) And now, not so great things: We finally get to see Matt in the naked-butt hospital gown and we don't get even a single glimpse of his naked butt! Also. Claire isn't in the episode, which meant that she missed the "pigs must be flying in frozen hell" sight of Matt finally getting proper medical care. So, I am doubly disappointed on her behalf too. They finally sorta explained how Fisk got out of jail after S3 and... it just does not pass the sniff test at all. Even if he somehow managed to blame all the crimes of S3 on the corrupted FBI, including the surveillance room that was built in a hotel that was owned by him, there was still the issue of all the crimes from S1, which he would've still been serving the sentence for. Fisk's overreach was too much... it was too comic-book-villain. And the best thing about Fisk was always the fact that he was terrifying because of his humanity and his behind-the-scenes manipulation. But shutting off power to the whole city to trigger disorder? Telling cops to forget about due process and go shoot suspects on sight? Declaring martial law? (WTF?? He is a mayor of a city, not a state governor! Where's the Federal Government, please? Or is Trump in charge already? In which case... yeah, figures). And keeping millionaires and other 'rebels' in cages? (i.e. alive and a burden? gotta feed em, clean em, make sure they don't chit chat and plan)... that's some post-apocalyptic warlord-level bullshit. Fisk's power has gone to his head so much, he really has lost all touch with reality and became a caricature. Frank's capture by the rogue cops... That should've been a version of THIS speech:

Not some "do you think you understand my pain?" bullshit. Come on Frank, you should've been dressing them down for the being the cowardly traitors to their oaths that they are! Did you get hit on the head too many times?? Finally, Heather is really an idiot, isn't she?!

TL:DR

Episode was full of love for Matt and Karen... but very Disney in terms of the plot development and over-the-top Fisk's villain-ness.

Like, I know it's gonna be Heather who will be at Matt's bedside when he wakes up. I know this. But I desperately want a moment where she's blurry at first, as he's coming around, and the first name out of his mouth is, "Karen?" And then it all unblurs and reveals Heather's annoying face.

That or a Foggy hallucination. 🥺 A soft, "Hey, buddy. There are other ways to get attention, okay? And only one of us is allowed to be shot in the chest by a deranged super psycho murderer on a revenge mission, you got it? We've definitely met our quota for the year"

It happened!!!! He said "Karen", and Heather's face fell! But not only that! Once Matt started talking to Kirsten, he completely dismissed Heather, like he finally realised that she could not be and share in his real world, his real concerns - for Foggy, for justice.

my brother has been watching daredevil through for the first time, and i fear i can no longer stay silent. In reference to The Defenders: "Ok Karen is super unreasonable. It's either Matt beats ass or this immortal cult kills a bunch of people, and she's mad that he's forced to daredevil again???"

my brother in Christ, that's the drama. That's the tragic exchange of having a friend/romantic partner who is capable of heroism but has a tendency to almost die like every night.

like, we went to the same schools. we had the same teachers. why is the media literacy gene not hitting?

Matt also lied to her (and himself) by telling her he doesn’t need to be him again. Putting the blame on that side of him for all his past mistakes. So she was not unreasonable for being mad at being lied to again.

I just wish the writers did a better job at explaining her point of view and not throw her under the bus by being the "unreasonable" one in urgent situations like that. But well. She had like 5 minutes of screen time 😒

And this reading of the narrative was confirmed in a flashback scene in S3, where Karen says that "Daredevil was not the problem". Karen never had a problem with Matt's vigilantism. Unlike Foggy. She admired him for it. It's the lying that she could not abide. And here he was, trying to lie again.

Hey, I’m just reaching out to people on Tumblr. You’ve probably heard of Jesus and God, but have you ever reached out to Jesus for problems in your life? Big or small. Not to make you uncomfortable, but did you know sin (in your life and other people’s lives) can really hurt you, it make feel like there is a void that is never satisfied. That void could be called a “God sized hole.” Sin sucks and not just in a societal cookie cutter way, but in a way that it feels like there is a decay within a person. That can be a lot to take in, but I hope it is good food for thought. I hope you’re having an awesome day!! 💕

Big, small, or God-sized, I've personally never had a problem with an unsatisfied hole that wasn't easily solved with lube.

Same but with cheese. Eating it or throwing it at the problem always helps

for the sake of safety, I'm gonna order a roll of these and stick them on every packet of cheese I have access to

I haven’t used tumblr in probably a literal decade but I got it again specifically to give you a prompt bc I’ve been absolutely loving your DD fics. Apologies in advance if I’m doing this wrong.

Prompt: Foggy has recently found out about Matt being Daredevil and is still really pissed at him and still giving Matt the cold shoulder/saying nasty things to him when actually speaking to him, not accommodating his disability at all anymore because he’s not really blind, now, is he? etc. because Foggy’s just feeling really betrayed. But then someone comes after Foggy (case related, random mugging, bank hostages, whatever) and Matt protects him as Daredevil, preferably getting hurt in the midst and trying not to let Foggy know because he doesn’t want Foggy to forgive him just because he saved him. Then Foggy finds out he’s hurt and goes into total mama bear mode and takes care of him and says he’s going to try to let go of his anger and start over.

I’ve been imagining a fic like this for a while now and been looking for a writer who’s open to prompts and whose writing I actually love, and I think I’ve found you! I hope you’ll consider doing this; I would be over the fucking moon! Btw, my ao3 acc is starkanium. Hmu there if you’d like!

Thanks, and keep up the good work! :)

Matt basically sacrificing himself to save Fisk is an absolutely insane scene because the parallels go crazy. Matt following his no-thoughts instinct to save someone like he did as a child which started him on his hero's journey... Fisk's shirt looking like the painting that started him on his villain journey... the contrast to the first episode where Matt says who cares about morals and chucks Bullseye off the building, saving Fisk because he's still a hero after all... The parallel to Season 3 finale where Bullseye tries to kill Fisk but Matt fights him off but this time it goes even further at Matt's expense. The constant parallels throughout the show showing that Matt and Fisk are alike and also they are obsessed with each other and depend on each other. I'm going crazy

This^. That episode was so well crafted!
