ᯓ translation of an interview of Esteban Ocon by Canal+

Interviewer : How are you, Esteban?

Esteban : I'm fine, thank you, thank you.

Interviewer : The satisfaction of having made it through Q1 quickly turned into disappointment with this accident, can you tell us about it?

Esteban : It's my fault today, I'm disappointed with my performance in qualifying, yeah. I shouldn't have made that mistake, I tried to push a little bit more, Turn 2 and I ended up on that curb and that's it, I lost the car. I hit the wall. These are mistakes that don't normally happen to me in qualifying. So, I'm disappointed with my performance today and I should have done better for the whole team. We've been working hard for a long time now. And I think we were going to have a good qualifying, this time we were in a good position so we're going to try to do the best job possible tomorrow. It's not over yet. We're not that far from the points anyway so we're going to do everything we can to try to get into those points tomorrow.

okay uhh definitely not the right person for this come to jesus moment because i just talked about how this McLaren car on its pace and unnaturally low tire deg merits alone should be grand chelem-ing every race, but- it’s honestly not fair to expect perfection from any driver (though i fear in recent history max changed our reference point, but that has more to do with how red bull as a team operates and it’s a whole other post’s worth of content). lando has professed to struggling with the car’s setup every week and every week we’re like “it’s a rocketship” but maybe it really does just suit oscar more than lando. (not to mention lando’s brakes gave out in china and there was a whole pit wall shitshow in suzuka.) it’s like theorizing that lewis is mid bc charles is outperforming him- it’s just not true and charles is just more used to ferrari bullshit.

here are all the reasons to stop shitting on lando for one medium quali result:

  1. THE DRIVERS ARE HUMAN.

plus the season’s just better when lots of stuff is happening and everyone is in contention so all you mfs who were complaining about McLaren domination just to turn around and shit on lando when multiple teams were finally fighting for pole,,, what exactly do you want????

it is a really interesting thing to see perhaps the shifting of the balance of power at mclaren given oscar’s relative consistency in china and now in bahrain but again, it’s way too close to call. but as an op81 fan, i am still a little miffed that people are willing to let oscar slide for anything and aren’t willing to give lando credit for much at all.
