Gotta love that response from j0hn to somebody calling his boyfriend a whore btw. Not only does he not care he actively encourages it. Vividly imagining some in-universe celebrity gossip rag reporting outlet drumming up a story about Larry having some kind of Scandalous Affair for clicks on their social media and then j0hn showing up in the replies like

behold, a sketch I made when this was posted and never shared

Never stops being funny to me that the main things that have gotten strong reactions out of the notoriously unsettlingly chill j0hn are as follows:

  1. His boyfriend in general <3
  2. Imminent threat to someone he values the wellbeing of (see: dani, folk)
  3. Having to interact with crimson for more than 5 minutes

This is a guy who casually discusses his body being irreparably horrifyingly altered with little regard for his survival as someone 'being a lamo to his whole body' and isnt even particularly venomous to the woman who did it, he just mocks her anime opinions a little and carries on. and by the end of one conversation with crimson it felt like he wanted to bite him

He doesnt even want him dead or anything like hoedown does. He tried to relate to him on the basis of their chaotic natures. he reacts to hoedown saying she wants his head on a pike with 'haha yeah,,' and then after shes walked away is like YEESH about it but good god he just gets under his skin so goddamn quickly. Something about crimson just pisses him off and its so entertaining i need to see more of them being insufferably catty with eachother

I think its interesting that while theres no discernible reason the gods would or should need to eat or drink (frankly i think you could give any one of them a flagon of everclear to chug and they'd feel nothing on account of not having blood to intoxicate, its all a sensory experience for them, so like theyd still probably choke on it because it tastes fucking awful but,) all of them do, but crimson especially so. Loves food. Between dubious pizza and making fucking mac and cheese and being very comfortable despite full consciousness of it being disgusting admitting to having eaten things off the floor (specifically seeing a soda get poured out and responding, paraphrased, 'eh, wouldn't be the worst thing i ate off the floor' to Spriteman's disgusted 'and you're PROUD of that?') and the following:

My take is that, given the gods' natural state is sort of abstract as seen in crimson's depiction at one point as 'an imbalance of red' in spectrum's hues, that crimson only really gets to eat when he has a physical form. so when he's corporeal (whether that be because he's got his own physically manifested body for the time being or because he's possessing some poor bastard,) he indulges himself until he's either had his fill or he's made his host sick, whether that be from overeating or a sensitivity like crimsonaut's lactose intolerance. Unless the gods actually DO need to eat for some reason, (which has. Potentially darker implications. for this behavior of his.) theres no other immediately obvious reason to me for Crimson to behave as though food insecurity is a legitimate concern for him by doing things like caching thanksgiving sides in offscreen secret hiding places except that he just really really enjoys it. and doesnt want to risk losing access to it because getting to eat is like. a Special Occasion for it.

On the opposite end of the food issues spectrum we have Dani apparently partaking in restrictive dieting- girl what the HELL do you MEAN youre CUTTING CARBS you're an ATHLETE are you trying to pass out on stage like Larry???

Im still hung up on this btw like forget the broxas incident this is the real evidence that dani's perfectionism is self-destructive and irrational to me girl what do you MEANNNNN

But to address a tag-

while Some of that can definitely be attributed to chartreuse never needing to eat or sleep before i think the nutter butters thing and the sleepless week is more indicative of the somewhat common phenomenon of 'leaving an abusive situation and then immediately crashing and burning psychologically from the stress of finally cutting yourself free.' Because chartreuse definitely ate recreationally even before casting off her godhood- after her and folk's big argument over Chartreuse not being transparent with him about things that could or will effect him and his home, theyre described as having spaghetti dinner together, and chartreuse is apparently pretty good at making mashed potatoes! So not only does she eat but she eats often enough that she knows how to cook basic foods well!

but enough spitballing counterfactual timelines im interested in OUR version of events. And in OUR version of events I like to think this happened

(Immediate aftermath of the escape from the majestic universe)

(Not Pictured: the new guys from the majestic kerfuffle having no context for how weird this is and thinking 'aw they must be close :]' while the kerfuffle oldheads are dutifully averting their eyes because if any of them bring this up to dani or crimson later they know they'll get hunted for sport. which is why Larry is probably covertly trying to get a picture without them noticing)

bad au ideas: everything's the same except Team Crimson was sort of a Shark Tale situation

In my defense, firstly i phrased this in the silliest way possible because i thought it was funny, secondly i didnt mention crimtoinette at all, and thirdly this idea isnt actually new! Around the end of season two when crimson's character was being reinterpreted in response to the introduction of chartreuse, it was playfully proposed at one point that Dani's betrayal was actually staged as a means of giving Crimson an out after he'd done his job of scaring mortals away from fucking around with dimensional travel. Now, that doesnt easily scan now but at the time there wasnt really anything to clearcut to logically refute it. Theres a reason i called it an AU idea.

Anyhow, the timeline here would therefore lay as follows:

  1. Everything up til the team crimson stuff is the same. Crimson shows up, hes scary, dani hungry for the championship shows up, kicks his ass, he possesses valentine and WOOPS the grunk dies, crimson approaches Dani offscreen and Dani, for whatever reason she was doing it at that point, accepts the team up offer.
  2. The hiatus happens and theres some degree of bonding as team members which we don't know the details of but must have happened for Crimson to have gotten as attached to her as he's played when the betrayal happens. He potentially already was somewhat open with her about his familial relationships in canon in this span of time, judging from the fact Dani immediately recognizes who Cobalt must be when she shows up to team calibur HQ for presumably the first time since 20 and he arrives to challenge her.
  3. The point of divergence- at some point Crimson lets slip the real nature of his and Prism's relationship much much earlier somehow, and like in ncct2, Dani's conflicted- he's clearly a victim of something awful, AND hes very much killed someone.
  4. Iggy approaches Dani asking her to use her apparent closeness to Crimson to get him to fuck off out of his tournament after he was forced by his debt with Cobalt to let the brat live where he wouldve wiped him out entirely. But, like in ncct2 and onward, Dani presses forward with trying to genuinely help him, pitying his situation despite her doubts.
  5. The plan is simple- stage his death publically so he can hide from his abuser and do what he wants and- hopefully- have the chance to be and do better in hiding, AND Dani gets to reap the rewards of being the big hero that slays the monster. Crimson thinks 'hey, maybe this can actually work- if a character is dead, the narrative doesnt like. bother with them anymore, right? No use in screentime for a corpse' failing to consider that a death fakeout is the oldest trick in the book, and still keeping the whole 'we're not real people' thing to himself. It works, and dani bails, the internal conflict of her doubt left unresolved but the external one finished with enough to be put out of mind for the time being so long as she gets out of dodge.
  6. For months, it actually technically DOES work- he hides out successfully for the entirety of season two- buuuuut, he got himself caught in Crimsonaut, which severely limits his options for what hes actually able to do with this new freedom of being unpercieved, and even explicitly intended to attempt a coup against Dr. Order with his position undercover in one of her experiments- he wouldve failed, as we know from folk, but I'd call that intention a good thing. particularly considering he explicitly thinks shes a freak for being the way she is, which leads me to assume that even in the canon version of events the coup plan wasn't ENTIRELY selfishly motivated. Meanwhile, speaking of The Time Being, Dani faces her first REAL fight against the power of a god, and she puts up a damn good effort- against an ultimately mortal woman who was just working with a charge of the stuff, but nonetheless ultimately fails. Trauma and the inevitable imposter syndrome of taking credit for and pretending to have meaningfully won a victory you hadn't and maybe couldn't congeal together with the unresolved doubt as she once again promptly bails.
  7. But, Chartreuse and Folk knew where he was hiding and, intentionally or not, corner Crimson and make his survival explicitly known to the camera, and thus prism and the narrative and audience. Crimson scratches 'escape' off the list of ideas, as any peace earned this way is fragile and temporary. The futility of it all sets in a little deeper. The rest of Crimson's season 3 breakdown with the constants arc proceeds as normal, the return of the status quo digging into him a little worse because of the period of time where things were a little better, Cobalt's presence adding to the feeling of the bounds of his metaphorical cage growing more and more claustrophobic.
  8. Dani learns from Cobalt that Crimson is Up-To-Something. The impulsive attempt at destabilizing the multiverse luckily fails at just the right time, crimson failing to fuck up at his own job. For most people, this attempt was expected crimson behavior. For Dani, this is a 'leopard cant change his spots' moment, a confirmation that she was wrong to give him the benefit of the doubt, because victim or not he'd taken the chance he was given and used it to do this, a mistake she'd made in sparing him kindness. He was always just a monster anyway. Infuriating. Disappointing. Perhaps, failing to understand how difficult and complicated it really can be to escape an abusive relationship- relapses happen, people get trapped, especially in circumstances with abusers as violently controlling as prism, willing to destroy your body to force you into compliance, who monitor your every move for judgement and especially in instances where an abuser can use their victim's flaws or mistakes against them, to isolate them, to make them persona non grata so they have no choice but to remain under their control.
  9. From this point, Dani fully takes the whole godslayer reputation to heart- that thing with order barely counts, shes pulled off a win against all three of the REAL DEAL (nevermind the fact none of them were ever ACTUALLY shooting to kill, its all been performative fights, shes never ACTUALLY killed a god or even beaten one that wasn't holding back and she knows that and thats scary and kind of pisses her off,) shes the champion, shes on top, shes better than all this. But she still doesnt feel right. And thats when Prism comes in and she starts getting real up close and personally acquainted with what happened to the ciblings as Prism starts working her manipulations on her, and that added to the experiences of the past couple years are taking their toll.
  10. And, as per canon, Crimson burns through every resource he has left in a final desperate useless last stand for control of his life after warning dani as subtly as possible despite Dani lashing out at him because Prism prodded at her trauma, dies on stage, pops back up in larry, finds out Prism had always made him to be evil, and goes and curls up miserably defeated in a hole somewhere too consumed by futility and doom to act.
  11. Experiencing Prism fucking with her head personally and directly and altering reality and making her feel crazy and otherwise generally subjecting her to abuse and manipulation and then taking over her mind and body in the interest of grooming her into a new god in turn gives her the perspective she needs to doubt her stances again- no amount of willpower or ingenuity or just saying no or telling her to fuck off stopped it from happening to her too, and her own thoughtlessness is what made her vulnerable to that. if Prism WANTED Crimson to be a monster and had unlimited power to corner him into that box so long as she could exploit the flaws she'd raised him from the ground up to have, then what choice did he really ever have, and who could he be if he really did get a choice? What happens now? etcetera etcetera effectively the same questions the nccts already ask and answer from that point

Like i said, au where everything is the same, except.........

considering j0hn and larry's modifications seemed to be kind of 'exploratory' in terms of how they were relevant to Order's studies, and j0hn has features from Order's tampering which go on to sort of be iterated on with the clonebot line of experiments, i think the mach line was meant to be something similar for the type of modifications larry has, but she struggled to recreate what Larry's got going on in the same way. Machiavelli, an ultimate lifeform, the Ultimate Fighter, is described as being built to learn and adapt, even physically, to copy new opponents strengths to use against them, which is the explanation for his kirby copy ability- and presumably also like, his down b where he turns to stone/metal and comes crashing down- he's a copycat learning machine, whose form can change in a seemingly limited (although whether thats a hard limitation or simply a hurdle he hasnt gotten over yet is unclear,) way to facilitate adapting new techniques. This is an ability which mach 2 appears to entirely lack, which may be part of why Order had such disdain for him as a 'failed successor.'

Most of this assumption comes from kirby copy ability and also this bit where Machi thinks Larry wouldve been a better fit to be the ultimate fighter because he's shifty 'all the time,' implying thats something that wouldve been desirable in achieving the goal he was designed for as the Ultimate Fighter™.

Of course this implies the psychic powers were maybe a happy accident. which is very funny
