The biggest question on the original post was very obviously about if the boys still attempted human transmutation. The sort answer is: Ed did.
Instead of trying to bring their mom back, the boys were attacked that night. Al lost his body during the shuffle (he died, I guess) and Ed was left for dead, which gave him time to bond Al’s soul to that armor. And Trisha… wasn’t there…
The boys don’t do a good job explaining what happened, afterwards. People don’t have blades for nails or shapeshift. It’s just ridiculous! But Trisha’s checking out the wreckage anyway.
