Do you (or your friend if she doesn't mind) have recommendations for older gay fiction with characters that aren't upper class?

hi anon! i've passed this right on to my friend and the first thing she did was ask for clarification (how much older? by publishing date or setting? is autobiography okay? literary fiction only?). without this info we've come up with a little list that may or may not have sth you're looking for!

written before 1980:

set before 1980(ish):

most of these you'll have heard of or otherwise have on your radar, so i've kind of put them in ascending order of exposure. queer works published outside the upper class before 1950 are a tall order simply because of the structural difficulties that were (partially still are) in place in publishing. novels like love, leda couldn't be published in their age and a lot of work still has to be done to bring them to light, so hopefully this list will grow much longer as more works are rediscovered and published!

It's such an amazing feeling when someone picks up on something in your writing that you 100% intended but didn't think people would notice. Like, YES!! My writing properly conveyed the thing it was supposed to!!! You are so awesome for noticing that!!! I am so awesome for writing that!!! I feel so good about my story now!!!!

Rich as you are Death will finish you: afterwards no one will remember or want you [...] You will flitter invisible among the indistinct dead in Hell's palace darting fitfully

Sappho, trans. by Mary Barnard, excerpt of "Fragment 82 ('Rich as you are...')", in Sappho

"aros can still date!!": boring. tired. overused. frequently used to make aros look more palatable and acceptable to amatonormative society.

"alloros can still stay single!!": fresh. new. exciting. hearing it could change many people's lives for the better regardless of romantic orientation
