Frankly, I think video game remakes which engage in fidelity to their source material by updating the graphics and keeping the mechanics of play exactly the same have it precisely backwards. The bar in terms of gameplay design has been raised so far in the past thirty years that a title that was genuinely revolutionary in 1995 probably plays like shit compared to your average indie freeware title from 2025. If you wanna engage in some approximation of faithfulness to the source material, keep the graphics exactly the same and update the gameplay!

Like, I cannot emphasise strongly enough that there are student project games coming out this year that routinely blow AAA games from twenty years ago out of the water in terms of their mechanical design. The graphics treadmill may be a marketing gimmick, but this does not mean the state of the art has not advanced.

#i have mixed feelings about remakes in general but nier replicant's remake took this route and is much better for it#+ it was a game that really did not have a chance to shine at the time it came out#and one of the reasons i'm ambivalent towards remakes is because they're very rarely an attempt to elevate a game that actually needed it#vs nostalgically redoing something that everyone already knows is great#been enjoying ff6 very much this year and it getting the 7 treatment is like the creative nightmare scenario to me lmao

Got home yesterday and passed out and still feel like I could sleep for a week but it was a worthwhile visit just hope the next time I'm in my hometown it's not for a massive emergency

Part of me wants to write out the situation so I don't feel completely insane trying to recount it later but I need to like calm down before deciding whether Tumblr needs to know about why my parents should be in jail

Nevertheless

Extremely stressed and angry but hopeful also because seems like extended family have all realised my parents should be in jail and are actually helping and intervening from now on
