Mike in the territories is such a joy to watch. Once I fully get into the US Express/WWF era, I need to really compare the style of wrestling that he does there vs Carolinas/Florida. He was so incredibly good at seamlessly blending amateur and pro styles; grappling on the mat with an opponent then hitting em with an airplane spin. He's a good boy, Mr. Bob Caudle.

So I am pretty sure if the guys happen to share an amateur background of some sort, they'd be allowed (or even sometimes actively encouraged) to do minor shoots, especially at house shows. Given the level of respect that amateur guys would have still been carrying at this time, it wouldn't surprise me if they'd be happy to do that at any given opportunity, just to show off a bit and lend credibility to the business. 🤔 Just my two cents!

Sorry, Xentex, adding your commentary from the tags!! I really appreciate you both adding your thoughts; I'm still trying to nail down wrestling terminology as it pertains to the years I'm currently watching- it's all so very fascinating.

In Mike's case, I find it interesting when commentators really drive home his background whenever he has a match, especially when they speak on his accolades, alma mater, etc.

I think what I am trying to get out here is I've noticed that -at least with Routnda's early pro career- amateur skill = good guy. Never a rule breaker, always follows the rules, a beacon of sportsmanship, which makes him stand out against the other guys in the locker room. So while other wrestlers who may have also had an amateur background (Flair and Adonis immediately come to mind) it's not a part of their *gimmick*.
