WIP Wednesday

I got tagged for a wip whenever by @elf-trash so I'll hop on that today! No pressure tags for @theriothag, @gefionne, @buffybummerz, @opal-apparition, @dayntee and anyone else who'd like to post!

From some future chapter of Roots:

For a moment, she was seventeen again, riding a wave off the coast of Wycome. It was the first time the ocean had truly gotten the better of her - truly scared her. She caught the wave a little too late, diving forward just slightly past its crest, and instead of being carried along weightless as it curled, it crashed her violently into the seabed. Her arm snapped back - a pain she didn't even register because by then all she knew was the horror of tumbling through whitewater. She knew she could hold her breath through it - she'd held her breath for longer before - but the knowledge wasn't a comfort as the wave tossed her like a rag doll. Her back scraped across the stones and shells embedded in the sand as saltwater stung her nose, and she thought it would never end.

👀👀👀 Does Roots Solas regret how things ended up with Felassan? Felassan seems to be a bit bitter with prompting Lavellan to ask Solas about that club night. I wonder if there is an OT3 in the making

👀👀👀

Since Geltberg happened close to 20 years ago, I don't think there's a lot of regret or bitterness on either side about the end of that not-quite relationship. Probably there was at the time, but not now that they're so far removed. Now, they're friends who speak occasionally, and to the extent that either of them is bitter about anything, it's about ideological differences, not romantic ones.

I have some future plans for Felassan so I don't want to go too in depth here. He still very much enjoys getting under Solas' skin and knows how to do it well, and I think his prompting for Ellana to ask Solas about that night in the club was specifically about his talent for making Solas squirm. Pretty sure Felassan got off that phone call and laughed himself silly.

If you want a fantastic Solavellan story with some Solavellassan sprinkles, might I once again recommend like the love that discovered the sin by @dirtheran. Their Felassan is sooooooo .....

And in the meantime, I will keep whispering in the ear of the person who I know would write the Solavellassan club fic of our dreams that they should definitely make that happen. For me. For us. For the greater good.

All that said idk anything could happen in a one-shot, in a dream, etc. Who knows.

For the WIP Meme, Solavellan Club R3, plz and thank?

Welllllll, basically. I wrote one club fic and that was not enough for me. Solas in the club is a deeply insidious concept and I keep having to shove it into increasing levels of mental quarantine to prevent myself from writing (and thinking) only that.

So I made a document for a Solavellan club scene in Roots. Except there's no actual room for it in what's left of Roots. So it's going to have to go in something after Roots, whatever that will be. (Hence the R3, "Roots 3," the yet unnamed thing I am being gradually talked into.)

But this WIP is, currently, a 500 word outline nearly all in caps of mostly plot points but with a good chunk of dialogue written out. None of it is worth sharing at this point, but I can tell you it's an Ellana POV and is, therefore, unhinged.

Thank you for the ask! (For the WIP meme)

With the identity of the Final Inquisitor now revealed to the world, Ellana Lavellan (an investigative journalist) and Solas (a history professor) team up again to dive deeper into the mysteries of the Dragon Age as well as a series of strange phenomena that have been reported across Thedas. (Sequel to Overgrown)

Excerpt:

"This is truly - and please understand I don't say this lightly - the worst idea you've ever had." It wasn't, Solas knew. Not by a long shot. But Ellana had only been subjected to a few months' worth of his ideas, and was operating with a limited sample size.

Six-Sentence Sunday

I got a few of these on Friday too (and failed to do them then), so thanks to @thebookworm0001, @dayntee, @cursedhaglette, @sandetigerrr for the tags!

Tagging: @crackinglamb, @theriothag, @elf-trash, @postboxrose and anyone else who would like to join (no pressure!).

From the next chapter of Roots (oops it's 7 sentences):

"You appear to be enjoying yourself far too much for someone who just insisted on the gravity of our situation." "And you're not enjoying yourself? You broke into a library to spend the night there as a kid, and you want me to believe you're not absolutely dying to go wander around a closed museum?" "I can wander around the museum in Lydes after hours whenever I like." She stared at him, hands on her hips, as they arrived at the top of the stairs. "Yeah, but you're allowed to do that." It was possible, Solas considered, that Ellana understood him a little too well.

Great news, anon. It now, finally, exists. And there's art by the amazing @mimi-maru.

Mature 7,220 words Solas/Felassan Clubbing, Dancing, Mutual Pining

He was a hypnotic dancer. Fluid. Like a wave crested from his shoulders all the way down his thighs. Every movement a curve rather than a line. Adaptable, too. Skill-less partners were graceful in his arms when they succumbed to his rhythm. Everything he touched became beautiful for a moment. Then he moved on, the light dimmed, and they were dropped back into sloppy, simple normalcy. Solas disappeared, a circle of worshipers enveloping him as the beat throbbed beneath Felassan's feet.

Thank you for the tags @theriothag, @dayntee, and @liberaquantobasta-catossa!

Tagging @postboxrose, @crackinglamb, @fadedsweater, @sandetigerrr, @virshiral, and @rosieofcorona (no pressure! and feel free to jump in even if I didn't tag you!)

From the next chapter of Roots (picked this bit because @theriothag had a steel-toed boot mention in hers!!)

Ellana looked him up and down appraisingly. "You could probably kick it in," she determined with undisguised excitement.

"That would be quite loud. And these," he said as he lifted a foot to draw her attention to his dress shoes, "are not the ideal tool for the job."

"What … is the ideal tool?"

"Boots. Preferably with a reinforced sole."

Solas was reasonably certain she said "Huh" in reply, but the sound of it was a bit too breathy and resembled much more closely various sounds he'd heard her make under drastically different circumstances. They both found things to investigate that did not require looking at each other.

Roots - Chapter 26

With the identity of the Final Inquisitor now revealed to the world, Ellana Lavellan (an investigative journalist) and Solas (a history professor) team up again to dive deeper into the mysteries of the Dragon Age as well as a series of strange phenomena that have been reported across Thedas. (Sequel to Overgrown)

Solas x Lavellan || Modern AU || Read on AO3 || Read from the beginning

Excerpt:

"I somehow missed you when I was in Denerim a few weeks ago." Ellana let a little hint of an accusation creep into her voice. Varric definitely caught her tone - she saw his shoulders square a bit, like he was bracing for a blow but wasn't entirely sure from which direction it would come. "Yeah," he said, shifting his weight again. "Shame about that. You look nice." "You look lovely," Cassandra amended, her small smile visible below the bottom of her mask. Ellana took a deep breath, preparing her assault, but was stopped short by the feel of Solas' hand on her bare back, his thumb rubbing gently along her spine. "Good to see you again, Varric," he said. "How long has it been?"

Hi Luzial,

since I have no AO3 Account yet, I just wanted to let you know, that I am really fascinated by your writing in Roots. I mean Overgrown was already good, but somehow the mix between a really fascinating narrative and well the smut is in perfect balance. I‘m currently in chapter 17 and the suspense is killing me. 😅

The only thing I would probably ask, as I‘m writing my own Sollavellan fic (still in the works). How do you keep going for such a long period? And does it help, that you are writing in an Au setting, since you are almost entirely free to the narrative?

So long, creative wishes

Aaaah hi Ally! Thank you so much for the ask and for finding me on Tumblr since you don't have an AO3 yet!!

It's hard for me to answer with any confidence how I've kept writing for such a long stretch. The truth is it's a pretty new feeling/experience for me. But here are the things that have helped me the most:

  • Writing every day. I know this doesn't work for everybody and of course that's totally OK. It works best for me. I'm a creature of habit. If I open a draft in the morning and keep it up in a tab all day, I will edit it, add to it, think about it. And then it just becomes part of my daily process and it would be weird not to do it. I hate days when I'm too busy to write now - so much so that I'm finally slowly overcoming my aversion to writing on my phone.
  • Outlining. Normally when I get stuck it's not because I don't want to write, it's because I don't know where to go. Having a strong outline helps so much with this. It doesn't have to be incredibly detailed but it does need to be a roadmap of where I plan to end up (even if the path shifts along the way). I've seen people talk about how one of the pitfalls of writing a longfic is thinking you have a full plot, when what you actually have is a bunch of scenes you want to write. I've absolutely had that issue in the past. Outlining can help you identify whether you actually want to write a big, long story or if you might be better served writing scenes in one shots.
  • It's hard for me to answer whether being in an AU helps. Obviously there is more freedom but that's a double-edged sword. I don't have the existing story structure to keep me on track, so if I wander too far that's all my fault. Being in an AU is helpful at least in the sense that it gives me a chance to be creative in ways I enjoy, like sifting through existing DA lore to see what I can use and repurpose for my setting.
  • And finally, the biggest motivator for me. I'm thrilled that people enjoy Overgrown and Roots but the truth is there are about 1-3 friends I'm writing for most of the time. If you can find a friend who understands what you're trying to do with your story, who gets as crazy about it as you do, who wants to know more and prods you to keep writing and screams in your DMs, that is gold. There is nothing like it. I'm very motivated by prompts and suggestions and my friends know that and it's become this great cycle that I feel very lucky to have fallen into. There's not any one way to find someone like that but participating in the community, reaching out to people, forging those bonds, etc etc - all of that helps. Having someone cheering you on makes a world of difference on the days when you're struggling.

I hope that answers your questions and, again, THANK YOU so much for reading!!

Featuring a chapter of Elvhen Glory by @littleglowingwolf!

Excerpt:

Cole's car had never felt more cramped. Ellana convinced Solas to take the front seat for once, but that left her in the back with the stack of garment bags draped over the seat next to her, Solas' satchel beside her, Cole's backpack on the floor below that, and her work bag at her feet. Thankfully, it was only an hour's drive to Halamshiral, though nothing about her current circumstances made her feel like she would be at a ridiculously fancy gala in a few hours' time. She leaned her head sleepily against the window, grateful (and somewhat surprised) that the car's air conditioner actually worked. Merrill was staying at a little guest cottage on some farmland just outside of the city. She'd assured Ellana it had just enough space for the four of them to get ready before they made their way down to the museum.

WIP Wednesday

Wasn't tagged, just excited ☺️ So consider this me tagging anyone who reads it, it's Wednesday let's gooooo!

From the next chapter of Roots:

Merrill turned toward Solas, who was now loaded down with all three of the garment bags as well as his work satchel. Ellana held her breath.

"Solas! It's so good to meet you!"

He blinked at her. "We've met."

"Well, yes. But I didn't really know who you were then."

"Merrill," Ellana bit out a warning.

"What? I meant that I didn't know he was your boyfriend the last time. What did you think?"

Double chapter drop today because I ended up splitting the one I was working on!

Excerpt:

They'd been summoned to the capital city for a tense, after-hours meeting at the Archives Nationales with a handful of administrators who were adamant that the Inquisitor's letters should immediately be put into their care (and, therefore, into the possession of the Orlesian government). Ellana sat in furious silence, digging her nails into her leg, as she let Solas respond to their questions with an impressive arsenal of non-answers. In the end, they'd agreed to make the digital scans of the letters available to the Archives - though they'd neglected to specify when precisely they would do so and the people they'd met with hadn't thought to insist on a deadline.
