Monty's Dead Man's Hand: An Analysis I'm Totally Not Using As An Excuse To Yap
so as has been pointed out, monty has a dead man's hand hidden up his sleeve!
now, obviously the specific choices in cards could be completely random but what's the fun in that? (and also i really wanted a reason to yap about cards again) so here's some possible meanings of observations i made in this panel. mind you, i'm not like. a card reader or anything. i have a BIT of experience with it but it's very sporadic and mostly just me messing around so take anything i say as a grain of salt — cartomancy is really subjective anyways. the choice of it being a dead man's hand is obviously symbolic, but i specifically like to imagine the cards in it represent the things that ruined his life—
- the first thing that sticks out to me is that the hand is club-dominated. clubs (or wands in tarot) are associated with willpower (i kid you not a very good portion of the search results say clubs/wands are associated with the will) and i'm not SAYING it has anything to do with capital w Will but it is a very funny coincidence. obviously, we know monty is a very driven person — even if he is often driven to do not so great things — and arguably that is what gets him in a lot of trouble. i'd argue it's what got him killed, what made him such an easy target of abuse from his mom, etc.
- spades (swords in tarot) are associated with the warrior class. conflict, power, authority, all that good stuff. these are all things that got monty in a load of trouble — always one to start up a fight, always desperate to assert his dominance, always wanting power, always having problems with authority. another thing that genuinely got him killed (sleeping with a reverend's daughter is crazyyyy monty)
- hearts are. well. hearts! they're your emotions, your love, your desires blah blah blah. noteworthy is it's the only red suit in the hand, which immediately draws your eye (and, because of the scroll format, it's the last thing you see! definitely feels like you're supposed to notice it). now, i'm going to mention what the card's number is because i think that's pretty important to the point i'm about to make — it's an ace. aces obviouslt represent beginnings, new opportunities etc. an ace of hearts could be many things, but considering the very next episode seems chronologically to be one of the first truly good things we see him do (even if it involves murder but honestly whatever murder is pretty forgivable in fiction), and, as he says himself, it's the first thing he does that is actually illegal. he uprooted his whole life because a dog made him sentimental — acting purely on empathy for once is what properly ruined his life.
- oh yeah also hearts are associated with the clergy and, well, the chain of events that kicked off his Horribleness was definitely religion-related. the hearts suit damns him twice over, how fitting.
- i'd try to read more into the numbers of the cards but honestly i don't think it's worth it and cartomancy numbers confuse me deeply i fear

re-thinking everything since this scene with what we have learned about Annabel Lee
her worst fear is going mad but more it's losing her personhood it's letting her father down it's not meeting the expectations she's been groomed to exceed
then her father asks her to be a "good example" to a mad woman the living embodiment of her own worst fate and this woman could be cruel terrifying destructive everything Annabel Lee has been told would ruin her family's life and hers by proxy
and Annabel Lee falls inlove with her! the living embodiment of her worst fate turns into just Lenore who steps out of bounds who's so herself she hardly takes the time to think about it who goes with her gut in death and in life
i think it's so tragic that the webtoon comments specifically brand her as selfish and manipulative and nothing else because her leaving with Lenore and marrying each other is the first selfish act she does ever in her whole life the first one to really matter
everything she does has been for her family for her father she delivers herself to death to not become a spinster and the first time she does something selfish it's Lenore
of course Annabel Lee saw the rest of them as disposable how could she not
she spent her life barely alive and the only person who let her live was Lenore losing her is her new death she protects her just as she protected her father's reputation
nothing else matters more

Montresor saving the dog isn't a redemption arch he is still a villian we are seeing a different side of him not that he's switching sides entirely we aren't seeing him change drastically we are seeing him have depth guys please
redemption implies he's making up for stuff he's done or apologizing or making some heroic sacrifice when he fucking isn't he's just having empathy because he's a person not a one-sided demon that doesn't make him not a villian
