“This is Prince Jacaerys Velaryon,” Princess Rhaenyra announced proudly, handing the baby to the king. Adera waited excitedly for her turn to meet her nephew, but the next to take the baby wasn't her, but the queen.

Seeing Alicent's smile disappear, Adera began to worry. What could be the reason? Rhaenyra's maid, who sent for them to meet the new prince, had said that he was born healthy and without any deformity, so Adera couldn't think of any other reason why her friend suddenly seemed worried and upset. What was it about her nephew that made even the queen seem hesitant to hand the child over to her?

Then she finally held Jacaerys in her arms and understood the queen's attitude. All the emotion she felt disappeared the instant she saw his nose and the brown locks on his tiny head. For a brief moment, Adera's vision blurred, but she quickly blinked away any possible tears and bit her tongue to keep from screaming at the traitors before her. She wouldn't cry or make a scene. She wouldn't humiliate herself; the child's mere existence was humiliation enough. The child was precious, but Adera couldn't bear to see her husband's bastard anymore, so she handed the child to her brother.

“Let's hope the next one seems more Velaryon,” Adera said with a fake smile, and suddenly the room seemed to turn cold. She felt satisfaction as she watched Rhaenyra and Harwin tense up. Harwin couldn’t bear the weight of his wife’s gaze any longer, so he looked away in embarrassment. “I suppose the Baratheon blood of the mother is stronger than we think,” Adera added, turning to Laenor. It was clear her brother knew the truth of Jacaerys’s paternity and had never told him.
