My (Maira's) fics!

Updated for 2025! Find me here on AO3.

If you'd like to be notified when I post tidbits, snippets, or full fics, interact with this post! 😊

9-1-1 (Buddie)

Current WIPs:

  • for all eternity, (idiot) - a.k.a The Mummy AU! - Chapters posting weekly! Pretty much what it says on the tin, with some fun change ups just because I can
  • there is a fine line (between coincidence and fate) - a.k.a. The Mummy Returns AU! - because SOMEONE convinced me that Buck as a reincarnated Egyptian princess would be fantastic, and you know what? They were absolutely correct.
  • in aqua sanitas (vicissim) - currently 6k, almost complete. Since the Texas decision Buck is pulling away, and when words are exchanged about it Eddie unintentionally makes some poor tequila-induced choices.
  • vampire one-shot - inspired by a tumblr post about a love letter found in a museum.
  • Star Trek quote + indulging my hatred of the Elder Buckleys
  • Gravedigger AU - fans of Bones will know all about this one.
  • Accidental three words - Eddie says something out loud instead of in his head, and decides that the best way to handle it is to say the Q word.

Completed:

TBD WIPs:

  • take this life sequel - Eddie's POV. A truly ridiculous level of angst.
  • Past Lives Soulmates AU - my muse is not letting this go, but I don't see it being up any time soon. RIP.
  • locked room fic - inspired by That Kiss from New Girl. Partially drafted.
  • deeds and words sequel - partially drafted, established relationship cuteness
  • And so many more
The filter relies on manually curated open-source blocklists, including the ‘nuclear’ list, provided by uBlockOrigin and uBlacklist Huge AI Blocklist,” DuckDuckGo said in a post on X. “While it won’t catch 100% of AI-generated results, it will greatly reduce the number of AI-generated images you see.

Left: AI filter is off Right: AI filter is on

Another tip for DDG - if you want to permanently get rid of DDG's AI features (which you can turn off in settings, but only temporarily) - for now you can just use noai.duckduckgo.com as your search engine. Works as advertised in the name.

It’s easy to forget JRR Tolkien was a fairly prolific academic translator with an interest in early medieval literature and philology. It’s so inspiring that he found time to write The Hobbit while fighting for his life over Beowulf.

JRR Tolkien’s introductory notes for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are like “This is a superb little poem. I really enjoy the author’s ability to weave existing narratives within folklore into one cohesive tale. This was fun!” and his lectures and notes on Beowulf are lowkey like “Translating and analyzing this was my Waterloo. I have been looking at it for 40 years. I am Sisyphus and this poem is my burden. All of you are misinterpreting it. Me too probably. God help us all.”

To be fair, Beowulf is in a whole other language, not just from ours, but from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight's. And the state of Beowulf criticism was apparently such at the time that Tolkien had to write a seminal essay that said, essentially, "You FOOLS. You complete IDIOTS. Beowulf is a POEM. Not history or folklore, a BEAUTIFUL POEM. And it has MONSTERS IN IT. And contrary to what you might think, THE MONSTERS ARE AWESOME."

And this "Beowulf is good actually" take blew everyone's minds and was so influential in the field that every medievalist STILL reads it in grad school, lest we ever forget that Beowulf is a beautiful poem with monsters in it, and the monsters are awesome.

buck on every june 1st since 2019 was posting a pic of him and eddie and chris on his instagram story and he would write "happy pride month! 🏳️‍🌈 #ally #loveislove" and it would confuse every single person who saw it in different ways. a bunch of people would always reply "congratulations!" and he would say "thanks you too!" to everyone because he thought they were just congratulating his allyship

What are the daemons of the Horsemen 👀👀

I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED!!!

Raleigh: Saw-scaled viper. Small and not necessarily gifted with the most devastating venom, but nevertheless one of the deadliest snakes in the world by sheer numbers. The saw-scaled viper is known to be very aggressive and bite early and often.

Carolina: Cottonmouth Moccasin. Ironic, given Carolina cannot swim very well, but her snake is an avid swimmer that loves water. Unlike the saw-scaled viper, cottonmouths are not particularly aggressive, and will give a big display showing off their big white soft mouths and curling up to warn you away before biting. Carolina's would be particularly friendly and love to drop on people from above to drape on their shoulders - whether the person is prepared for a four-foot danger noodle or not.

York: Does not have a daemon initially. Then Detroit notices a mourning dove has started following York around. She does not mention this to anyone, least of all York.

Detroit: Gray wolf. She projects this means she's a literal lone wolf and tough and doesn't need anyone but anyone who actually knows wolves knows this means a very nurturing and social nature, someone who needs close-knit family and physical affection. Only Frisco is allowed to touch said wolf. Everyone very politely does not comment on the fact that Detroit's wolf is a girl, and daemons are almost universally of the opposite gender of their human.

Hudson: German Shepherd and she is THE BESTEST GIRL. YES SHE IS! YES SHE IS! SHE'S THE BESTEST GIRL EVER!!!

Dallas: Margay. He keeps insisting she's an ocelot. She is far too small to be an ocelot. Dallas and his daemon don't get on well. Especially when she starts cuddling Hudson's daemon all the time.

Phoenix: Turkey vulture. He helps her find undead when she's hunting. They deeply disconcert people because they can separate over vast distances as her daemon flies out to scout for her, which is highly unusual. Daemons stick near you and it's incredibly painful for you to separate. The fact that Phoenix trained herself and her daemon to endure such a separation says quite a lot.

Frisco: Shining Sunbeam Hummingbird. At the start of the series Frisco's daemon has not yet settled, even though he's just turned eighteen, which is unusual. She only settles after he loses his dads and community. Hummingbirds are beautiful and delicate but known for being absolutely furious assholes who will start fights with humans who get near their nests, and in some cultures are believed to be souls returned from the dead or able to visit the underworld.

ONE DAY LEFT TO VOTE!!!

alright everyone is being sassy but nobody has brought up the actual reason why scientists are interested in the titanic in the notes

Per wikipedia:

The Titanic was made of steel, presumably to resist corrosion (i mean. thats why boats are made of steel i assume) but even when iron/steel rusts people did not expect to find like. decomposition. bacteria are EATING the titanic.

and there's wood furniture from the titanic that isn't decaying. hell, there are wood ships at the bottom of the ocean that archaeologists study. so the expectation people have for the titanic is not that the steel would decompose at the bottom of the ocean. Even in 100 years, since there are much more ancient preserved wooden ships iirc.

(im not particularly knowledgeable about ships, i just had heard about the science going on around the titanic so i wanted to clarify that on this post for people)

The Titanic is an exceptionally weird whalefall basically.

Not a marine biologist but biologist enough to weigh in on this. The reason we have iron eating bacteria but not wood eating bacteria at the bottom of the ocean is simple. Hydrothermal vents release a cocktail of different mineral ores into the ocean. And bacteria and other organisms evolved alongside those so they evolved to digest these, like iron or other metal ores

Wood however does not exist at the bottom of the ocean since it basically never sinks down, even when logs are flushed out into the ocean they basically never end up at the ocean floor. So there's no bacteria that evolved to decompose lignin, which is already complex enough to decompose on the surface. And that's why wooden ships or the furniture on the Titanic stay intact for hundreds of years or longer.
