i do in fact have a little bit of beef with fan representions of the girls that try and claim none of them really cared that much about soccer. they did not all just end up on the team accidentally, its not like girls have ever been encouraged into contact sports. even now 30 yrs later. this had to be something most of them actively chose. and it has to have been for the actual sport because it wasnt exactly glamorous to be in girls high school soccer in the 90s. underfunded, ignored, not to mention an association with queerness that could actually get you hurt or ostracised. we're told the yellowjackets started out as underdogs so trust me they werent originally getting the treatment we see at the pep rally, they earned that.

i mean maybe for nat you could argue it was for that disciplinary plea, and possibly shauna joined for jackie. but tai? jackie? lottie? come on now. most of these girls wanted to play. they wanted to spend their weekends kicking out peoples feet and rolling in the mud and i do think thats a key part of their characterisation people shouldnt just gloss over.
