I was thinking through what else I’m looking forward to this holiday season and I realized I haven’t mentioned it on here, just on discord, but— MY MOMS BEEN MAKING ME A REALLY COOL ART THING??

I think I’ve talked about it before, but my mom has been a quilter for most of my life and in the last few years started doing these really cool fabric collages, and it was my turn to request one so I asked for a phoenix cause I’m obsessed with this one art piece I did in art therapy ages ago

Anyway, my mom has been working on it and THIS was the last update I got???

I’m so excited for it?? Can’t wait to see where it’s at by the time I get there this weekend

dude holy fucking shit???? this is. beyond insane. i also quilt, though i've never tried paper piecing - though this doesnt even look like that. this has surpassed any and every sort of traditional quilt work. i can't even imagine how this is put together. im just staring at it in absolute wonder. youve short circuited my brain with how beautiful that is, and 'beautiful' isnt a strong enough word for what this is

So, as far as I can tell, this is a technique involving cutting tiny pieces of fabric with the colors/patterns you want and pinning and using fabric glue, and then sometimes sewing over top depending on the size of the pieces (this is what I’ve gathered from listening to my mom talk about it, but I know she learned the technique from a specific artist I can’t remember the name of who sells books and classes). My mom also frequently uses tulle over areas with lots of small piecing, usually as a way to adjust color but also I think cause it’s easier to sew the tulle piece than try and quilt aaaaalll of the little bits and pieces.

Here’s some pics from the workroom when I visited in November, and some pics from in-progress pieces before they were finished, if that gives you a better idea of how it works ^^

And here’s some finished pieces!

Update! I asked my mom for the name of the artist who she learned the technique from! If you’re curious about this style, you can find more info on her website! https://susancarlson.com/

Apparently she’s very generous with free tutorials as well as having books and workshops

Update! Re:technique, it’s mostly glued at first, with extra glue as well as some free motion quilting on top over areas that don’t have tulle over them, and tulle stitched over some areas.

Also updates on the phoenix!

You can kinda see the metallic details on some of the fabrics chosen! I love them. Also a glimpse at some of the bits cut out to use in the tail!

I’ll sneak into the quilting room for more closeups of this and other pieces before I leave ^^

Updates! (First, oops I forgot to get more pics of the work room when I was home; family visits are always busier than expected)

I was given two options for background as my mom was finishing up the bird part—

I ended up picking the greener one cause I love all the gold stuff, and my mom added even more gold details for that mythical feel

So this is the current most recent form!

I'm going out of my fucking mind.

Holy SHIT.

Here's an interesting thing to consider going into conversations moving forward: The people who love you might say dumb things they don't really mean, maybe about you, or about things that are happening, if they're scared for your physical safety. Keep that in mind as the political situation escalates. Fear and Love make people stupid. Sometimes people actually do agree with you a lot more than they're comfortable with and they're scared. Try to be understanding and forgiving of things said in panic out of love and denial and exhausted, beaten down pessimism. Sometimes shouting matches can be avoided if you reassure people that you aren't going to be doing anything stupid or dangerous and you will do your best to keep yourself safe.

i go to the shop and I ask if they have any raspberries. they say no, they used to sell raspberries, but they haven't had any in stock in the last 15 years. I ask if there's somewhere else I can go to buy raspberries. They say no, with confidence and pride, they're the only shop around who has ever sold or will ever sell raspberries. Other shops might sell other fruit, sure, but they have a monopoly on all raspberries forever. I ask if they're possibly planning on them selling them again in future? they say they can't tell me that.

on the way home, I encounter someone eating raspberries. I ask and they tell me that they grow their own, they got some seeds from the shop back in The Raspberry Days and kept them. They take me to a field of many beautiful raspberry plants and invite me to pick my own, they're free for all the town to pick whenever they'd like.

someone comes up behind us. It's the shop manager, President of Nintendo Shuntaro Furukawa. he hatefully throws a bob-omb that blows up and kills both of us instantly for stealing 200 trillion dollars worth of potential Raspberry Shop That Doesn't Do Raspberries Anymore profits that they weren't making and then he turns around to the camera with a big thumbs up and says don't do piracy or something ok please

theres something about being disabled and needing to sit down constantly in public spaces that makes you notice how often benches are put up as tributes and memorials. and before i hit an age where i really started to need them as frequently i think i never fully understood the sentiment but now its become very endearing to me. a bit of relief and care for you in the name of someone who offered us the same… i dont think i had a point with this post but i hope everyone thats been memorialized as such knows how loved they were to become synonymous with respite even to total strangers

most recent bench i sat on

People who are arguing over what particular lake of lava we find ourselves boiling in are kind of missing the point.

If the person you are talking to/ listening to agrees on:

  1. Who and What the problem(s) are
  2. At least one or more solutions
  3. Wanting to help actively stop the badness

Then frankly, shut the fuck up about dictionary definitions and get going. (Btw, being somewhat pedantic myself, I understand the urge to try to precisely define things, so I'm telling you what I'm telling myself.)

Authoritarianism, oligarchy, tech oligarchy, fascism, monarchy, plutocracy, etc. Pick one or many, at this point who gives a shit, it's all bad. Where specifically are we on the slippery fascism slope? Who fucking knows? Quibbling over the specific flavor of bad is so silly. It's very bad right now and it's going to get much worse if we don't do something about it. Purposefully misunderstanding friends, allies, and strangers because they didn't quite say the thing you wanted them to say with the specific words you wanted them to say it with is actively helping our enemies, knock it off.

Example:

"If you don't 100% confirm we are fully fascist right now then you support what's going on and you are minimizing the situation, and I hate you for enabling fascism!!!!!!1!!" I'm telling you right now THIS is neither helpful nor accurate. If that's how you respond to someone who says something like; "Things are really bad right now and if we don't do something to stop it it's going to get much much worse, I'm not sure if we're fully in fascism yet but we could be headed in that direction if we do nothing" then you really need to look at yourself and decide what's more important, everyone fully agreeing with you 100% or working together and saving the country.

Republicans, the right wing in general, they know how to be a team. They pinch their noses and get shit done. If we can't be a team, we are turbo fucked. Get rid of the purity tests and start trying to actually understand the intent of what people are saying, not what you think they're saying. United we Stand, Divided we Fall.

----------------------------------- part 2------------------------------------

And really, you should be saving your energy for trying to change the minds of the people we most need to convince; republicans, conservatives, right leaning independents, right leaning libertarians and most tricky, the MAGA base. They don't give a flying fuck about any of this language debate, calling things fascist or oligarchy or whatever will make them actively tune you out, like how the words woke or socialist make them go lalala I'm not listening. They've been Pavlov-ed into ignoring anything to do with those words by the 24/7 talk radio/ Fox news/ Newsmax/ Breitbart disinformation extravaganza that's been ravaging this country for the last 40 odd years, sucks but it's true. (Hopefully Murdoch will join Ailes in returning whence he came soon enough).

You can describe something that is the textbook definition of socialist to a republican and they'll probably agree with you that it's a good thing but call it socialist and suddenly you're the devil and you tricked them somehow because socialism=bad end of story.

Same thing here, your best bet is probably to NOT call things oligarchy or fascist, but to actually just explain, for example, what DOGE is doing without mentioning DOGE or trump or musk or whoever at first and just say, "here's a thing that's happening, here's my proof." (Proof not from the "mainstream media" if you can swing it). "I think it's bad, it makes me sad/worried/angry, etc. What do you think?" Then try to have an actual conversation with them that doesn't devolve into screaming lol. Because if you start by saying "DOGE is bad, here's why" what they hear is: "I like waste, fraud, and abuse and want those things to continue to rot the government from the inside out" and then some Charlie Brown adult noises. Which means they've already stopped listening by the time you get to the meat of your point.

Words are just placeholders for ideas. Words are like Idea currency. If we don't all agree on the meaning and value of that arbitrary string of sounds (or piece of paper/string of numbers on a computer for money) the currency collapses and then we can't have any idea exchanges in that currency and we need to go back to the barter system for a while aka spelling shit out at length in detail. Much like the real market, the marketplace of ideas has been interfered with by powerful people with nefarious interests and we need to combat that, not just by having the best ideas but by being the best at expressing them. I don't know, my metaphor is a little tortured at the end, but you get what I mean lol.

It's hard but I find spelling out the ideas works better than single words because no one agrees on the definition of words anymore, not just because people are stupid, but because some words have been purposefully sabotaged, so as to collapse the idea economy so to speak, so you have to explain everything the word was supposed to explain for you. Which is hard and tedious, but we must do it, clear communication is vital. Understanding is vital. Teamwork is vital.

Maybe this can seem like it goes against my first point, but it really doesn't. Understanding that intent is more important than specific vocabulary usage and knowing what ideas are worth fighting and what ideas are good enough to stand side by side with is everything. Who do you really want to disagree with, who's mind really needs to be changed? Is it the person who agrees with you on 98% of everything, including the most important things, or the person who disagrees with you on 98% of everything, including the most important things? One is an easier fight to pick that's for sure, but a more worthy and useful one? I don't think so.

You know what, fuck it. Figure skating is now my favorite sport. Unless there's another one that will let a competitor dress up in a silly costume and do all these silly jumps and wiggles and fall on purpose, IN THE OLYMPICS, there's no contest

As a former figure skater I feel obliged to point out how technically difficult that little Chaplin patter would be. See the kind of speed he's getting up to and then immediately moving into that "walk" - sometimes without even a brake manoeuvre. The momentum you build up when moving at speed has to get released somewhere so stopping like that is usually an easy way to topple over (not on purpose). In the true spirit of Chaplin he is making very hard and potentially dangerous things look easy.

For anyone who might've been searching for who the skater is, @jay42 found out ! The athlete is Petr Barna, from the 1992 Winter Olympics

HEY, FELLOW HATERS OF INSANELY-BRIGHT CAR HEADLIGHTS, SOMEONE HAS STARTED A PETITION TO REGULATE THEM.

It's an official petition through the Australian Government's e-petition page, which means if it gets enough signatures, it will be tabled in government.

You do have to be an Australian citizen to sign it, BUT!!! PLEASE REBLOG THIS EVEN IF YOURE NOT, because these kind of things have a roll-on effect, and if Australia legislates LED headlights, then other countries may follow.

FYI, the petition asks only for your name and email, and once you've clicked the sign button, they'll send you an email to confirm your signature --- you need to click the confirmation link in the email to have your signature counted.

You don't have to be a citizen, but you do need to be a resident

I love relationships where the two people just mercilessly, RELENTLESSLY drag one another but they are so often tragically misunderstood as bullying/harassment.

Like, you can tell that more recent iterations of Star Trek have backed off on this aspect of Spock and McCoy for fear of looking racist--and to be fair, 1967 did not have the greatest awareness of microaggressions. But McCoy wasn't calling Spock a hobgoblin because he thinks Vulcans are lesser, he's doing so because Spock just called him a witch!

The shit they say to each other is wildly out of touch with reality when you actually stop and listen to it. Spock calls him a witch doctor making potions and shaking rattles and implies that he regularly kills patients.

Their insults should be updated for the modern day but c'mon, let these guys drag each other with the most absolutely unreal accusations.

In fact I think the reluctance of post-Roddenberry writers to accept that Spock was just being a big fat bitch is why modern Spock is so dull.

Spock has self-awareness. Spock always had self-awareness. Spock is a scientist; do you know how ridiculous it is for a scientist to sneer at chemistry and biology?

Spock knows it's ridiculous! Spock does not actually scoff at the existence of chemistry and biology! Spock is linking McCoy's emotionally-driven habits to archaic, apocryphal practices solely because he knows this annoys McCoy.

Why is McCoy's nickname "Bones"? It comes from "Sawbones", a Civil War-era slang for surgeon, because McCoy has a morbid fascination with the history of medicine. McCoy collects antique medical equipment. He's disgusted by how brutal and ineffective medical treatments used to be.

This is why Spock calls him a witch doctor: old and spurious medicine is McCoy's specific pet peeve.

I know Sam's just doing it for the lulz, but honestly, Yeza deserves so much better than Veth.

The bit where Veth talks to Yasha and Beau about polyamory and Yasha tells her she should talk to Yeza about her feelings is fantastic. Have as much sex with as many people as you want. I just don't like her constant 'almost but not quite' cheating and lack of communication with Yeza about her feelings. (Obviously the scenes themselves are hilarious because Sam's a comedian with a minotaur fixation, I'm talking purely in terms of the actual character dynamics). I hope Veth and Yeza talk and it all works out for them together. Or maybe they break up and Veth can go explore her options, and Yeza can find someone else, whatever they decide. Either way, honesty is the only way to handle it. (They might have, I haven't finished C3 yet, my brain won't let me, I'll come back and binge it eventually).

I think some people don't understand that Veth's behavior, if done by a real person, is shitty, which is... concerning. There's a big difference in intent between playful flirting and actively trying to have sex with people then changing your mind because you feel guilty and not going through with it.

Now obviously this is fiction so whatever, but I suppose I see a difference between "This is my blorbo and they've never done anything wrong ever in their lives" with a wink and a nod to all the burning buildings in their wake that you are actively choosing to ignore because you love the character and you're having fun playing with toys in the sandbox "so leave me alone, I'm having fun!" vs actually straight up just not seeing any character flaws and genuinely thinking that they are not doing anything wrong ever. Character flaws are Interesting. There are lots of fun and frustrating character choices by Sam, which is good, yay flawed characters. If all the characters were perfect angels, the story would be very boring.

I've been thinking about how to convince people that the bad things that are happening are A) Actually Happening and B) Indeed Bad, and it's so difficult because you can't reason people out of a position they weren't reasoned into. I'm very Spock about stuff and I am fully aware that most people are not, emotion matters more than reason in most cases sadly. We need better stories than the ones on the right. Stories that are fueled by truth of course, but the thrust of it needs to be emotional, not logical.

I was watching The Daily Show, and I think Jon might have nailed it at the end of yesterday's piece (relevant bit starts at 15:14, the whole piece is great though you should watch it all). There are all sorts of studies and facts and statistics he could have showed about social media's influence on our brains, and he showed a bit of it, but it wasn't the focus of the piece because studies mean nothing to the kind of people he's trying to reach.

He did what Maria Ressa asked, he made it funny like he usually does. And he went a step further and reached out to the conspiracy theorists, validated their suspicion of powerful people, and asked them why they weren't looking into THIS conspiracy yet? He basically threw down the gauntlet and challenged them. Fucking Genius frankly. He's got just enough street cred in these places where it might actually work. Being rational and logical was getting us nowhere fast, maybe trying to get these people pointed in the right direction is the way to go?

Trying to deprogram people from years or decades of disinformation is a fantastic and worthy goal and one I support wholeheartedly. But being realistic, that shit takes time and energy we don't have the resources to do en masse and maybe going with the flow to redirect it where we want it to go instead of trying to get them to appreciate laws or hypocrisy or peer review or whatever is the more attainable strategy short term. (Keep trying to get people to wake up and appreciate facts obviously, still fight the good fight). I don't know, it's worth trying. If they think it's illuminati lizards or whatever, at this point do I really give a shit as long as they correctly identify the real bad guys and get onboard Team Save Democracy? I'm not sure I do.

There are real conspiracies happening. I'm not sure you can really even call them conspiracies because they're so blatant lol. Maybe that's why the conspiracy peeps don't like it, it isn't shadowy enough to be entertainment? Maybe we need to start framing the real shit that's actually happening like it's a fucking spy thriller and then they'll get invested? If a Cabal of Billionaires trying to control our thoughts and feelings and speech and interfering with our elections isn't a spicy conspiracy, I don't know what is!
