For the record: I don't think home invaders should be killed on sight. I think they should be held to the same standard as any other criminal.

Which means that sometimes it's appropriate to stop them by any means.

Personally, I think the only circumstances it's not okay to stop them by any means is if they're fleeing the premises.

If you're already scared them off, then obviously you can't kill them anymore. That isn't self-defence. But if they're in your home, you should be allowed any means to get them out. And unfortunately, in such a situation, it's often safer to shoot them than try to hold them at gun point to get them out. If they valued their life, they wouldn't have broke in to begin with.

This post is basically ignoring all the systemic elements regarding crimes for the favour of condemning to death people who commit crimes.

Legitimate trauma shouldn't have a place in justifying death sentences and punitive justice actually (or anything political, really), that's why I'm extremely dismissive of it. It's a call to feelings and I frankly do not care. Killing and retributive justice is not the answer to prevent crimes and traumas in the long run actually. I'm sorry, but you should not be allowed to break into people's homes, steal their shit and hold them hostage, often at gunpoint or knifepoint, and be treated like your life and safety matters more than theirs. You are in their home. You are endangering their life. Your rights end where theirs begins.

If you stop and leave the second they pull a gun on you, then yes, they have no right to shoot you in the back on the way out. But if you're actively waving a knife or gun in the face of their family members, you have no one to blame but yourself if you get shot.

In Cucuta, where I got beaten up, that house had a metal fence plus a secured door with lock, police told us after the fact they were a band specialized in break ins via lock picks, and apparently had been scouting my aunt’s home for a good while, since they knew it was a big house mostly inhabited by two women, I got beaten up partly because they didn’t expect me to show up, and I assure you, had I not been there and derailed their plans, since they left shortly after I got tied up, they would have raped my aunt and her daughter, 4 young men in total control of the situation alone with 2 women? And with dad in the 60’s, he was in a house close to his military base, basically of shouting distance, but they took advantage of a rainstorm, and them knowing he was basically knocked out drunk after a party to break in, had it not been for his military training kicking in even in that state, plus his wife at the time successfully retrieving his service gun to scare the two guys away (she wanted to shoot, but couldn’t take the safety off of the rifle), he would have died after they finished the job, and god knows if they would have come for his wife and my half-sister next, I wouldn’t be alive today had they succeeded.

That's the thing though, hating people for what they've done wrong is actually acceptable. When any of them happen to be from X group, you more or less have to say to people, "I don't hate them based on their existence, I hate the certain individuals to do wrong".
