Most of the “keep up the work after the protests have ended!”-type posts I’ve seen are mostly focused on like, reading Black authors and listening to Black voices and unlearning racism, and obviously all of that is absolutely vital - but no amount of individual self-reflection will be able to dismantle institutional systems of oppression. So I wanted to put together some resources for continuing to build a culture of noncompliance and resistance to the police and prison system even after things have calmed down

But first, be aware that the protests aren’t over. It’s June 29th and there are still events and actions being planned regularly across the nation, and they still need your participation and support. If you’re able, please keep your focus there; this list is for what can be done long-term outside of the protests

  • Know your rights. Giving the police any more information than you absolutely have to will never and can never benefit you or anyone else - positive evidence given to the police is regularly thrown out in court, whereas negative evidence will be used against you. Know what to say and what you have the right to refuse. You don’t have to answer any questions without a lawyer present, you don’t have to give the police access to your house or car unless they have a current warrant signed by a judge. They will try to intimidate you - learn your rights and don’t let up, don’t ever cooperate with the police
  • Don’t snitch. If you see someone breaking the law in a way that doesn’t hurt anybody, keep your mouth shut. If cops knock on your door asking you questions about your neighbors or anyone you know, don’t answer
  • Don’t call the cops. If you can solve the problem in a different way, do it. Cops have on multiple occasions murdered the people they were called to help (or bystanders) without provocation. Don’t be complicit in that. Learn how to handle situations as a community or with the help of qualified experts
  • When you see an interaction with the police happening, stop and observe. If necessary, film the interaction. Organize and work with groups such as Copwatch to observe the police and hold them accountable
  • Use proper opsec, especially if you’re involved with anything that might make you a target for the cops. Downloading Signal is a great simple place to start
  • Learn about jury nullification, and spread the word. When serving in a jury, you have the right to vote not guilty on a defendant that you believe did commit the crime but doesn’t deserve punishment for it. Don’t be complicit in unjust punishment
  • Refuse to do work for the police or prison system. Workers keep the world running and the state relies on our compliance to keep our neighbors under their thumb. We can shut it down
  • Continue to support bail funds, even for non-protesters. Cash bail is unjust, and people shouldn’t be in jail just because they can’t pay
  • Continue to support legal defense funds as well, such as that of the National Lawyers Guild
  • Write to prisoners, either by yourself or with groups such as the Anarchist Black Cross or Black And Pink, and organize/support books to prisons programs, commissary funds, reentry programs, and other forms of prisoner support
  • Organize and support community-run crisis response organizations like the CAHOOTS program in Eugene, Oregon or the Birmingham Peacemakers in my hometown

Here are some other organizations to join that are doing good work in this area:

  • Black Lives Matter is obviously a huge voice in racial justice right now. The list of “official” chapters on their website is very incomplete, though, so you may have better luck doing a web search for “[your area] black lives matter” (beware of fakes though)
  • Showing Up for Racial Justice is another very active and widespread racial justice network
  • Critical Resistance is a grassroots prison abolitionist organization founded by Angela Davis
  • The Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement is another active prison abolitionist organization
  • The IWW’s Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee works with prisoners to organize strikes, phone zaps, and other actions combating injustice in prisons
  • Again, the Anarchist Black Cross does great work supporting political prisoners through letter-writing and more. The link I’ve been including is to an unofficial federation of ABC groups, though - there may be a group in your area that’s not part of that federation, so a web search for “[your area] black cross” may be better
  • Black And Pink is a prison abolitionist organization focused on queer people and people living with HIV/AIDS
  • Antifascism is of course an important aspect of racial justice and community safety. See @antifainternational‘s guide to getting connected to your local antifascists - though, again, beware of fakes (the “antifa checker” accounts on fedbook and twitter can help)

The police state and prison industrial complex rely on the complicity and cooperation of all of us to function and be effective. By building a culture of noncompliance and active resistance, we can drastically reduce the state’s ability to oppress communities of color. Don’t let the struggle be forgotten with the changing of the news cycle - keep up the struggle until all are free!

Boosts and additional resources are very much appreciated!

Ghosts

-> "Ghosts are those who have died, but cannot move on for various reasons: love, revenge or simply not realizing they have died. Some ghosts are tied to their place of death, metaphorically and perhaps literally chained to it while others roam freely; other ghosts may be tied to an object of sentimental value, and thus they follow the object.

Most ghosts are harmless, merely trying to accomplish whatever unfinished business traps them on the mortal plane before moving on. Others, however, have far more dangerous intentions and some only want to inflict harm and suffering upon those who still live.

Ghosts can come in many different forms, and to properly classify these types and their threats, the Heller scale was created by Dr. Bennett Heller as a way of ranking ghost types and has since become the primary method of classification used by parapsychology experts and students <-

There are nine different types of ghosts, each with their own specific characteristics and traits: Wight, Visitant, Looper, Shade, Poltergeist, Doppelganger, Bogey, Wraith and Phantom.

In addition to the types of ghosts, each individual ghost is assessed on their threat level using the Heller Scale, divided into three main levels: Tame, Moderate and High Risk.

Tame Ghosts

Calm, mainly friendly ghosts that don't pose a threat to the living. They're mainly haunting because they're trapped, by their deaths or events that happened around their deaths and merely need a guiding hand to move on.

Moderate Ghosts

Ghosts who may have been trapped for a long time and have started to experience a change in their behaviour or suffered a violent death, can easily turn violent if their obsession is threatened. These ghosts can still be reasoned with, but depending on their emotional state, may have to be exorcised.

High Risk Ghosts

Ghosts who have either been trapped for so long they've forgotten who they are or who have become so fueled by anger they seek nothing but to cause harm. They can also be ghosts who committed great wrongs in life and, as punishment, have become trapped on the mortal. The most dangerous kind of ghosts, ones who must be exorcised or otherwise forced off the mortal plane.

Certain ghost types are more prone to be one level over the others, for example Visitants are mainly only Tame types, however ghosts can switch from one level to the next if they're angered or their haunting is interrupted or disturbed in any way, a Wight for example can switch from Tame to Moderate or even High Risk if what they're protecting is threatened in any way.

Assessing both a ghost's type and level is crucial, in order to properly conduct an investigation and reach a satisfactory conclusion for both the dead and the living.

Edit 03/28/25

So I've gone ahead and edited this post, because I liked the idea of using the Heller Scale as this kind of assessment rather than putting each type of ghost into one specific category, instead having it as levels of threat that can cause a ghost type to change their behaviour depending on the threat level they are.

I will go through and update the actual ghost posts, eventually.

WTW POWER PROMPTS - DAY #3: MECHANICS

An excerpt from Introduction to the Classification of Psychic Abilities by Dr. Amelia Everett ->

Psychic abilities are divided into two main categories: receptive (meaning the ability presents itself internally with no external evidence) and projective (the ability presents itself in the physical world with external evidence) though some abilities fall into both categories. In terms of inheritance, generally children will inherit the abilities of their psychic parent, however there have been cases of psychics having their abilities evolve i.e a psychic with precognition develops the ability of retrocognition and vice versa. A psychic's ability can grow over time, becoming stronger though it can also diminish in power, particularly if a psychic chooses to suppress their ability though so far no cases of a psychic ability vanishing have been witnessed. Known Psychic Abilities are as follows: Telekinesis (classification: projective): The ability to manipulate matter with your mind, the most common variation of this is the ability to move objects or people, however there are sub-types related to the manipulation of elements such as fire, water, etc. One of the more common psychic abilities and easily the most dangerous, especially if a psychic becomes emotional. Psychics with this ability are called Telekinetics. Astral Projection (classification: receptive): The ability to separate your spirit from your body, allowing you to enter the astral plane. Psychics with this ability can also enter people's dreams or minds in order to communicate with them. Using this ability however puts one's body into an comatose state, leaving you vulnerable to attacks.
Empathy (classification: receptive and projective): One of only two abilities to be classified as both categories, it is the ability to sense and understand another's emotions, as well as even manipulate a person's emotions to make them feel a certain way or share another person's emotions with them. Psychics with this ability are called Empaths. Telepathy (classification: receptive and projective): The other ability classified as both categories, Telepathy is one of the most powerful abilities along with Telekinesis. This ability allows one to not only read another's mind (at its most powerful, without them even knowing) as well as communicate with them mentally. More skilled psychics with this ability can outright control a person and even modify or erase memories, making them one of the more feared psychics. Psychics with this ability are called Telepaths.
Clairvoyance (classification: receptive): Also called ESP, it is one of the more common psychic abilities with several other abilities falling under its umbrella. It is the ability to gain information about an object, person, place or event beyond normal means. A psychic with this ability might have a vision of what has already happened or is about to happen (Retrocognition and Precognition) or may see a location far away from them that they shouldn't be able to see even with the help of technology (Remote Viewing). They may also be able to tell what has happened to a person or object by reading them through touch or find a person by touching something that has belonged to them (Psychometry). Many psychics only show one of these abilities, but others might display some or all of these abilities though they can cause a great strain. Psychics with this ability are called Clairvoyants as a broad term, though other terms are used if their ability is more specialized (Seer for those with Retrocognition or Precognition). Mediumship (classification: receptive): The ability to perceive and communicate with both ghosts who walk on the mortal plane and those who have moved on to the afterlife. One of the more unique psychics, as many of them show abilities associated with clairvoyance but only limited to the dead i.e a medium might only sense the emotions of the dead. They can channel ghosts by offering their bodies as a temporary host, though it can be risky as the ghosts may refuse to leave. Powerful psychics with this ability can even repel or banish ghosts from an area, either temporarily or permanently. Psychics with this ability are called mediums.

WTW POWER PROMPTS - DAY #2: USERS

From the book What are Psychics? by Dr. Amelia Everett ->

Psychics are people with the unique ability to alter or observe reality in ways that most normal people can't. Psychic abilities are believed to be the result of a recessive gene, which only shows when two copies of the gene are present. There is also evidence that psychic abilities can skip a generation, for example if a psychic's grandmother was a psychic who married a non-psychic, the psychic's mother never showed any abilities then the psychic developed their grandmother's abilities. However, it is theorized that people with no clear line of psychic ancestry are able to gain psychic abilities particularly in a moment of high stress such as dying and coming back to life, through an atavism (where an ancestral genetic trait reappears after having been lost). Further theories speculate the gene may have gone dormant to protect the psychic and their descendants from prosecution during the days where psychics were viewed as either witches or demons, but nothing conclusive has been proven. In addition, it is believed that women and girls are far more likely to develop psychic abilities, indeed in studies performed it was found that daughters and granddaughters of psychics were more likely to receive their parent or grandparent's psychic abilities than sons and grandsons were.

WTW POWER PROMPTS - DAY #1: ORIGINS

An excerpt from Understanding Psychics : A Look at Psychic Abilities from Magic to Genetics by Corinne St. Laurent ->

"It is unknown when, exactly, the first psychic was recorded though many historians suspect it might have been when humans started walking the earth, what is known is that psychics as we now know them were not recorded as such in early historical records. Instead they were called witches, demons etc as their abilities were attributed to magic and superstition drew people to fear them, shun and shame them and even kill them. There are countless records of people claiming to speak to the dead, of being plagued by visions or knowing things they shouldn't. Whether or not these are all true cannot be confirmed, as no research into psychic abilities exists before the 1850s. With a rising fascination for ghosts and the supernatural, it created interest in psychic abilities that could interact with this world and early studies and experiments started to be conducted into these psychic abilities, starting the field that would become known as Parapsychology..."

[Begin Image Description: A blurry face shaded grey and glitching with the word Obsessions written in black, scratched writing with a white matching shadow behind it bordered by a flattened hexagon

End Image Description]

Obsessions

-> "In the early days of parapsychology, one question was constantly being asked: why do some ghosts haunt and others don't? When some people die, their spirit is more than content to move on but others remain on the mortal plane and some even become attached to people, rather than places.

Eventually, as more investigations were conducted and research was done, a parapsychologist named Dr. Irma Hatlen developed the idea that ghosts who haunt do so because of something driving them, what she dubbed obsessions" <-

Obsessions are the driving force of a ghost's haunting; not all ghosts have obsessions, visitants for example rarely have obsessions as they merely visit from the spirit world for a short time before leaving.

Obsessions range from the mundane to the dangerous, a ghost can develop an obsession with their favourite chair for example and might haunt because their chair was removed from its original spot while other ghosts have an obsession with their murder, wanting justice in order to move on.

Ghosts can also develop an obsession over time and the obsession can grow, for example a person is murdered and their murderer is never caught, their ghost becomes trapped and as they remain stuck on the mortal plane, they develop an obsession over their murder and, after remaining dormant, start to haunt.

The most common way for a parapsychologist or psychic to get a ghost to move on is to find out a ghost's obsession and how to solve it: getting justice for a ghost will help a ghost who is obsessed with their murder move on, finding and burying the body of a ghost that never received a proper burial helps a ghost that is obsessed over their lack of a proper burial move on etc.

However, as ghosts remain stuck over longer periods of time, even they might forget the obsession that's keeping them there, which makes it trickier to figure out why they remain. And in the most extreme cases, a ghost's obsession can twist them into a being of rage that even if their obsession is solved, they cannot attain true peace and must be dispensed of in other ways...

2024 Writing Round Up

Hello all!

As this year comes to a close, I thought I would give a little bit of a writing round up as to what I've done and what I hope to do in the new year in terms of my writing (both fandom and original).

I'm going to divide this up into different sections to make things a bit easier:

[Begin Image Description: A faceless figure concealed by a dark cloak, the word Phantom is written in black scratched writing with a white glow behind it surrounded by two interlocking grey-black hexagons with a white glow overlay.

End Image Description]

Phantom

Classification: High Risk

(personally I think its classification should be DANGER, DANGER, RUN AS FAST AS YOU FUCKING CAN IF YOU SEE IT COMING YOUR WAY)

Notes

  • Easily the most dangerous type of spirit one can encounter, only a few documented cases have been recorded due to their volatile nature (lucky us that we ended up finding one, yeah our luck really sucks...).
  • While other spirits want justice or to look after a person they left behind, phantoms were once people who inflicted immense pain and cruelty in life and, in death, continue to do so. Their obsession comes from the feeling that what they left unfinished was inflicting harm, and they continue to cause pain and suffering in their afterlife.
  • You cannot reason with a Phantom. The only way to stop them is to exorcise them, and beware, for their lack of remorse grants them immense power that can be hard to stop...

[Begin Image Description: A faceless figure draped in a dark veil holding up long fingers, the word Wraith is written in black scratched writing with a white glow behind it, surrounded by two interlocking grey and black hexagons with a white glow overlay.

End Image Description]

Wraith

Classification: High Risk

Notes

  • A type of spirit that develops a obsession with a specific person due to the belief that person wronged them in life and now seek revenge in their afterlife.
  • Rather than being bound to a place, they are bound to their target and will haunt them for the entirety of the afterlife; however if their target cannot be found, they will instead choose those who remind them of their target.
  • An experienced parapsychologist, with the help of a medium, can sometimes reach a resolution that allows the Wraith to pass on but in the majority of these cases, they must be exorcised (and they put up one hell of a fight people always say that life is too short for grudges well your afterlife is forever which makes it a great time to hold a grudge).

Last Line Tag

Thank you for tagging me @karkkidoeswriting, whose post is here!

I won't do the last line exactly bc I've finished drafting this WIP (GHGF), but I will take the last line from the chapter I took my last excerpt from:

“Come now, Chessa. What are you doing down here in the dark?” “I was just looking.” "Well, you shouldn’t be down here. Come on, ahead of me. Back into the light.” Chessa clambered up the steps ahead of her, every step a determined stride on her short legs. Velda followed, eyes on her until they reached the top, and she ran off towards the fortress. This glorified campsite was no place for children. If Teffrin had any shame, he would have left those girls with their mothers, wherever they were. Not out here with their handmaids, with servants of a broken god, in a ruined fortress. But she couldn't think like that. Questioning her buyer’s conscience would only put her reward in jeopardy. And her chance at a life without end.

Thank you so much for tagging me! Your excerpt is very intriguing, somewhat of a tease by the way. Nice stuff! Here's mine:

Their phantoms birthed the one called Rebellion's Dove.

Thank you for tagging me! Haven't had much time to write (mainly working on what little worldbuilding this wip has) but here's the last thing I wrote for Luna Paranormal Investigations:

Heather and Edward slowly shrugged out of their coats and boots, Maren hanging the coats up on the nearby rack before smiling warmly at Heather and extended her hand out again. “Mrs. Roberts, I can take your scarf as well—” “No!” The outburst made Maren pause, her expression unchanging as Heather flushed, not from the cold, as she fiddled with the scarf nervously and shared a look with her husband.

Can't think of anyone to tag off the top of my head, but anyone is welcome to add their own!
