well back in the day when vocaloid culture was first starting out (like 2008-2009) the community would give nicknames to producers like gokuaku-p and oshiire-p (maretu and neru respectively) and I guess the convention stuck cuz producers started to append the p to their names (the p stands for producer)

I'm not exactly sure where it came from (I was 0 years old in 2009) but the convention stuck, and now we have all these P-names!!! even though it started as a given nickname, producers have been naming themselves like this for a while now (which is true in my case)

and also: katachi-p changed her name a while ago, she's now just KAT
