Dylan often didn’t feed his cats it’s not believed that he did this on purpose one time his Dylan's father lost part of his shoulder and had surgery his mother and father got up at 4am when everyone was asleep to get there for his 6am surgery. While his mom was staying with his dad at the hospital for 13 hours Dylan home alone and didn't feed the cats the cats were downstairs howling, and Dylan was upstairs with the door locked asleep his mother reacted was “1/11/99 This long, hard day is over. Tom's surgery was today. We had to get up at 4:00 AM to be there by 6:00. After sitting and waiting for 13 hours, I just needed to get home. Good thing I did because Dylan hasn't exactly risen to a level of responsibility in my absence. He overslept and missed a class and was sleeping when I got home. Nothing taken care of that I needed him to do (like take care of the cats). What have I raised?”

Apparently Dylan’s father was really hurt when the massacre happened and grieved heavily because he felt like him and dylan were best friends, and had especially gotten closer in the months prior i think he was also said something about “losing his best friend”
