anything i find interesting i shove into the queue

i think the funniest part of dean’s recount of the infamous “you brave little soldier” sam moment in tall tales is the bit where he reassures weepy sam at the end of the interaction because he’s somehow conceptualized that not only is sam this overly emotional wreck but one who depends on dean for comfort and that dean provides that like that is literally so fucking funny to me as if early seasons sam wasn’t one bad mood away from taping dean’s mouth shut for peace and quiet at all times like yeah once every five episodes sam has a hard time about his visions but dean provides base level comfort and the way dean is retelling this moment is like he literally sees himself as sam’s mother hen on a day to day basis i love you dean you’re so odd

I will never get over the fact that Dean legit thinks Sam is so needy and overemotional and this is part of his personality... when Sam is one of the most stoic and repressed characters in the series. The women in Sam's life knew almost NOTHING about what was going on beneath the surface. This man fully committed himself to lying to his fiancée about his past and his family for the rest of his life. He did that to Jess, and then he did it again to Amelia. Healthy communication in a relationship? Sam's heard of that, but he's sure as shit never going to implement it.

And what drives me really wild about this is that... yeah. The very, very few times Sam opens up and wants to talk about his feelings? He does that with Dean. Because Dean was his only source of comfort while he was growing up. And this is why Dean developed this impression that Sam is emotionally open.

their dynamic is deranged and i love them

I’m convinced that Sam’s normal is the result of a lifetime of observation and mimicry. Imagine little motherless, homeless Sammy. His only models of behavior are a grieving revenge-driven father and traumatized brother. He internalizes their distrust of strangers. When he starts school, he quickly realizes how different he is from other kids so he watches them and mirrors their behavior. One of the reasons he’s so successful in investigations is because he’s been studying people his whole life and knows how to manipulate their emotions with “puppy eyes” or by presenting as empathetic, but he can turn on a dime and browbeat a witness or bash someone’s head on a bar. He’s not heartless. It’s not something he’s necessarily proud of, but Dean sure as shit is, ahem, Gordon Walker.’s death by razor wire. Still, Dean is somehow convinced his Sam is the softest, babiest baby brother ever.

“Maybe I was brought back for war.”

*LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER NOISE*

Wrong! You were actually brought back so that god’s favorite toy (your emotionally repressed boyfriend) doesn’t kill himself. The only thing you need to prepare for is dressing up as a cowboy and eye-fucking each other to death with absolutely no promise of follow through. I hope this clears things up <3

sam cheats on dean with female romantic partners and dean cheats on sam with male (looking) father/brother figures. now what does that tell you.

spn really said the worst thing sam can do to dean is let a woman replace him and the worst thing dean can do to sam is trust a familial figure more than him. ok.

also interesting to note that it’s always a woman that takes dean’s place. :)

what i say: i’m fine

what i mean: when sam and dean are investigating andy gallagher, a guy who they fully think killed someone with his mind, they find a massive bong in his car. more specifically dean says hey sam look at this massive bong and then picks it up, turns to sam, and smiles. smash cut to sam and dean in the impala, eating food together for no discernible reason. now im no expert here but they obviously used that bong didnt they. they broke into this guys car and took his bong and smoked his weed and then got the munchies. supernatural is a show steeped in subtext and that subtext includes the incredibly vital fact that sam and dean winchester stopped their telepath murder investigation to smoke the telepath murder weed in the middle of the day and then got on with their case like nothing happened. who’s doing it like them

no bc the amount of times people close to sam and dean have implied there’s something more going on between them?? it’s actually insane. like it’s not just random strangers on the street picking up on the vibes—it's people who know them. people who’ve been around. people who have no reason to joke like that unless they’re seeing something.

we got ruby in season 4 straight up asking if they’re together?? like girl said that with her chest. jody in season 10 telling them they have something special—and you know she meant it in a “wtf is this intensity” kinda way, not just “aww sibling love.” crowley dropping that line about his butler having heard things?? pls. what was he hearing exactly?????? lisa saying their bond is the most tangled-up thing she’s ever seen? bffr. zachariah literally calling them erotically codependent??? that’s not a casual observation, that’s someone who sat down and analyzed it. balthazar asking if dean stole any kisses while sam was unconscious—LIKE??? that wasn’t a throwaway line, that was a callout. and then the reaper in s15 saying she’s seen and heard things?? nah. no way she meant that platonically.

and even cas. when dean’s like “you think sam wants a divorce?” and he’s just deadpan like “it’d take more than that for sam to walk away.” like. that man has seen it all and he’s still not even surprised by the mess they are.

and these are people who have been in their lives for a while. they know the winchesters. they’ve seen the full range of chaos and codependency and still come out the other end making those kinds of comments. it’s not a coincidence anymore. it’s just canonically hilarious at this point. the friends, the enemies, the exes, the angels, the literal death entities—everyone is in agreement: whatever’s going on between those two is not normal.

i was thinking the other day how we tend to draw cas and dean (correctly tbh) like

but in doing so we are betraying another fundamental dynamic of theirs which is more like,

sam’s the type to interrogate demons about what happened to dean in hell because dean refuses to talk about it

sam turning it into a research project. he’d have a little journal dedicated to what he learns about dean that he can’t ever let dean know he found out about. actually while i’m on the topic sam has a journal for every period of dean’s life he wasn’t there for

always thinking about the one episode where dean got possessed and sam had a rifle POINT BLANK on him and the ghost or whatever was like 'you wouldn't shoot your brother!' and sam was like 'it's salt bullets. he'll be fine' SO confidently. as if that was a serve like. sam bestie baby love honey if you shoot ANY hard object into someone's head especially from mere inches away they are dying. sam sweetie just because you filled it with salt doesn't mean it's not a bullet. sammy I thought you had a full ride to ivy leagues how do you not know this
