Nib Mettaton

@nib-mettaton / nib-mettaton.tumblr.com

A side blog for an oddball outcode Mettaton with no real purpose, other than just to enjoy musical creativity and find himself.

@picopepin I may have made this remix, but this was your doing. XD

(Some credit where credit is due: The MIDI file I used as a base was made by "The Music Decomposer", you can find their MIDI file here. )

I had some odd struggles getting MTT to sing this song. Turns out the vocal range of the song is difficult for him. (ಠ‿ಠ)

For context: Mettaton's dialogue voice has nine sound beeps. But some of the beeps sound better in the "Tenor" range, and others sound better in the "Baritone" range. None of the beeps cover both ranges at once. So normally I just pick which beeps are appropriate for that vocal range.

But the key of this song forces MTT to sing at both ranges, some parts with a near octave jump.

Which meant that if I picked a tenor beep, all the high notes sound more like Alphys but if I picked a baritone beep all the low notes start sounding like a grinding box fan. And while I could "switch" instruments, that's just annoying to do.

The only way I could make his voice sound reasonably cohesive was to layer one "tenor" beep and one "baritone" beep, such that the high notes don't sound too high-pitched and the low notes don't sound grinding (kinda like hackneyed bass-boosting and treble-boosting where needed). Not that it was difficult, but it took some trial and error with some 20 possible permutations to find a combination I was happy with.

Uuuuuuuuh my hand slipped... this was going to just be a concept piece tonight like I was on the verge of passing out and I told Ghost theres no way i have the strength to draw anything but then i had a passing vision of a 2025-tella to @nib-mettaton's orginal nutella major arcana card, the priestess. I was plagued by symbolism in the pillars of Ube's arms and the moon motif already present in one of the outfits that i designed for him. I ACTUALLY had started an illustration back in 2018 of like.. the og nutella to the original card just to have some fun (under the cut) and well.. it never really lasted... this was like three computers ago too

I saw the post over my lunchbreak. You have absolutely no idea how much I was trying to contain my squees in the company break area. Ohhhmygosh, your artistic interpretation looks so gorgeous!

Hey, I finally finished the AU Mettaton Tarot Deck.

And it only took me seven years!

Okay, it was technically not seven years, but time on-and-off, sometimes years apart, such that it is now seven years since I started.

But I am done. Here's a quick photo preview of the last of the cards, the Minor Arcana Pip Cards. (If you're looking for the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana Court Cards, you can check them out here).

I did end up using some more current/ongoing AUs (and one DeltaRune reference), but since project did span seven years, a good chunk of the AU Mettatons in there are old and came from works that are discontinued/deleted, such that they can't be found except though some serious extensive internet searching.

Which makes it a bit of a precarious situation on whether or not it would be (dis)respectful if I tagged the creator or not (especially when I have no clue if they no longer wish to be associated with the AU anymore). I'll figure out how to tackle that issue when I can get my computer+scanner setup less janky and able to scan the last of the cards in at high resolution.

Kind of like the official UnderTale Tarot deck has duplicates for certain cards, I'm tempted to duplicate some of the ones I know are bona-fide deleted, but then that would end up in a loophole of having to constantly replace cards over since AUs don't always last forever.

But something just tells me to enjoy* the cards as-is and keep it as a slice of AU Mettaton history.

*(by "enjoy" I mean... maybe... possibly set up a side blog do silly/unhelpful readings for UnderTale AU characters who drop an ask?) ( ˙▿˙ )

Over on ComicFury, there's a fun yearly character-building exercise where you force your characters to answer a total of 100 random questions, one per day. I liked Quill's answer here so much that I decided it was worthy of a mini-comic.

FYI: Please don't eat actually try to eat the "wild glizzies". Some people have gone to the hospital due to the cattail fluff getting stuck in their throat. :(

If you haven’t been yet aware, I’m trying a new comic project on called NotePad-Metta, which has a gag-a-day feel to it. This is one of the pages I uploaded to it. You can read it at the following link:

Random Undertale Yellow thought

Obviously, with Undertale Yellow being a fangame, my thought is not canon, but I figured I'd toss it out there on the interwebz in case someone doing fanfiction or fancomics might be inspired by the idea.

----------

So, in the fangame, Kanako is a Boss Monster who had fallen down at a young age due to a secret soul experiment gone wrong, and then her body is brought to the Dr. Alphys's lab for the DT experiments.

Which would have to imply that, if the information of the soul experiment (or even Kanako's status as a Boss Monster) was not disclosed to Dr. Alphys when Kanako was brought to the lab, then Dr. Alphys was working on bad medical history information when doing the DT experiments and maybe that could have been a contributor as to why things went awry when Dr. Alphys started injecting DT into fallen monsters.

----------

Anyway, again, not canon, just a thought.

An expression BINGO I did for funsies for an upcoming character-building exercise on ComicFury, where characters are forced to answer 100 questions over the span of 100 days.

Expressions are not required for the character-building, but it's a nice thing to add (akin to a flavor text). In my case, I'm doing double-duty having both Nib and Quill go through the same exercise, and this is a good way to compare-contrast Nib and Quill's potential reactions to a given question.

I generated 13 expressions per character, though only 12 are shown here (the one missing from the BINGO card is their expression for "rage", which I figured was impractical to get a BINGO combo with). I wonder how many questions it will take out of 100 to get to BINGO, or I'll achieve a Blackout BINGO.

I did drop comments here and there saying I was working on expanding the "Power of NEOclassical" Mettaton piano music album. This is another piece that will eventually go into it, a take on the Mettaton fansong "They Need a Monster" by Mandopony.

On another note, I noticed this sounds also quite nice on plucked strings, here's the same song with MuseScore 3 mandolin soundfont.

There's also quite a few other piano songs from the "Power of NEOclassical" that sound nice with a plucked strings soundfont. I'm no guitar guitar player, but I wonder if you guys would be interested in a pseudo-guitar album?

Your Character 4 Ways - Quill Edition

There's a drawing exercise going on over at ComicFury, and the exercise was that you had to draw your character in 4 different forms:

  1. Demonic
  2. Angelic
  3. Geanie
  4. Anything that takes your fancy

Mid-November I was occupied by a business trip and all. And, for the same reason, I didn't have anything done for Quill's birthday (November 14). So I used Quill him instead of Nib for the art exercise.

Textless versions under the cut. Let me know if you have a favorite (I'm partially biased towards the Kitsune Quill myself).

So I thought of something silly...

Here's Nib!Mettaton and MV!Mettaton. They're good buddies.

Here's their 'UnderFell' versions. They're good frenemies.

Not Halloween-themed, but enjoy these blooks-in-a-machine this spoopy spooky holiday. :D

MV!Mettaon (and the Underfell variant) by @tatatale

I genuinely swear uploading the pic of Quill and MV!Mettafell fighting on the day of the 2024 Halloween boop wars was coincidental.

Hello! I'm the main admin of the event, dedicating Mettaton and Alphys from Undertale @mettalphysweek. I'm very sorry for disturbing you. I just want to offer you to take part in this event. I hope, it would be interesting for you!

Hello! Thanks for the invite!

Unfortunately, I have to bow out (I have a business trip planned around that time), but maybe some followers of mine might be interested, so I'll boost!

My virtuosic piano interpretation of "Power of NEO" based on Toby Fox's unfinished work. It's actually a shortened work, as I deliberately excluded the bridge (I was struggling with how to interpret that part) and because the piece itself was getting too long. I do plan on eventually making a more "complete" version with the bridge though I need some time to sit and think over how to interpret the second half of the song. But I think this is fine as-is right now.

The sheet music will be uploaded later on my other blog @piano-virucide and my Musescore profile after I clean up the notation to a presentable state.

(FYI: If you're new to my blog or my music work, I did do a version of "Power of NEOclassical" based on the IKARUS remix, which can be found here.)

Toby Fox just dropped an extended Power of NEO version in the newsletter

  1. It sounds amazing. You can listen to it (along with other unused music) here.
  2. Dogdammit, now I have to update the Mettaton classical piano album.

Technically, I had plans for making an updated and extended version of the Mettaton piano album anyway, but now I gotta take the time to listen and transcribe this new "Power of NEO" (unless someone else transcribes it first and releases it as a sheet music or MIDI, which would actually speed up my album-making process, because then I could study the transcription and jump straight to remixing).

The musician in me is dreading the transcription process. The fangirl in me is wiggling with excitement and anticipation.

I've nearly transcribed the basic melody (except for the bridge, which anticipate will be the toughest part). This is the fastest I've ever done a rough transcription. Clearly, by the Power of NEO, I am filled with DETERMINATION.

Y'all, it's only been 4 days since Toby Fox disclosed the extended version of "Power of NEO", and somehow not only have I finished the transcription, I managed to come-up with a virtuosic piano remix. I'll be dropping my piano remix later tonight.
