Senator! Bucky Barnes x Female Reader
Warnings: World building so nothing really, unless you count heavy angst and mentions of a break up. If you follow my work, Iβve sprinkled in an Easter egg in here from another fic.
Summary | Keeping busy is something you know how to do well, especially after the publicized break up with your ex. As his political fame rises, so does the need for you to focus on yourself and keeping your walls up for self-preservation. If only it was that simple.
The ringing in his ears has finally stopped, President Wilsonβs State of the Union speech bringing people to their feet, the applause thundering for more than a few minutes.Β
Sam Wilson hasnβt always been known to be a rousing orator - years as a VA counselor meant he led with empathic firmness - but the determination in his voice, two years after the battle with former President Ross had nearly brought the world to the brink of destruction, President Wilsonβs speech would be forever cemented in history.
βSenator Barnes!β A woman shouts, a microphone thrust in his face as she turns on her megawatt smile like sheβs turned on some internal switch. βPresident Wilsonβs speech is being hailed as a tremendous achievement, bringing multiple party lines together. As a longtime friend to President Wilson, I am sure youβre very proud of him tonight.β
βVery,β Bucky agrees, seeing Jules, the head of his staff, tap her watch. βPresident Wilson did not hold back on reminding the public of the things he had promised once he got into office and how he has delivered these promises to the great people of the United States and our allies and friends.β
Jules mouths the time as he pivots to leave.
βThank you Senator, always a pleasure!β
The flashes of the cameras and more reporters yelling for him for another sound bite only makes his steps quicken to the waiting car. Normally, he would stop for another interview but time is of the essence - he has a speech he will be delivering to his constituents in less than six hours.Β
βYou alright?β Jules asks, looking up from her phone to inspect her boss. βWe can move the speech back by a day, you know. Youβll get two hours of sleep if youβre lucky.β
βTwo hours is a start.β
He can see her running her teeth over her lower lip, which means she wants to say more, even as her eyes go back to her phone.
Her head snaps to attention at the mention of her name.
βUh, nothing, Iβ¦β she trails off. βI sent her flowers. Itβs her birthday today.β
