THE FIFTH CYCLE - wip introduction

genre: YA fantasy

POV: Multiple POV, Limited

Status: In progress

For the first time in three generations, the Ky Lan chooses her mortal Incarnate. Her appearance heralds the return of the other three immortals, whose Cycles return in times of change to pick a worthy mortal amongst all of Ngonglai. The Dragon Trials begin, a competition to find the one deserving of the Dragon’s mantle. Each contestant seeks the power of the Incarnates for a different reason--for themselves, for their families, for the knowledge. But, lost in the fervor of the historic Trials, the people of Ngonglai forget an important truth: there is balance in everything, and the return of the immortals is a harbinger of an equally powerful evil, one that may bring about the end of the cycles altogether.

Writing a Blind or Visually Impaired Character

A Multi-Step Guide Written by a Visually Impaired Writer and Blogger

I’m hoping this blog will over time develop its own following, and when it does people will inevitably see my bio and notice what I included: I’m visually impaired.

Yes, a visually impaired writer, and I’ve written with two blind characters before so I have some practice in the field.

So, inevitably, someone is going to ask how to write a blind character.

Or, at least, I hope you’ll ask someone who’s actually blind or visually impaired about writing a blind character before you get too involved with your new WIP.

All parts will be tagged #blindcharacter in my blog, and I will add links to every post as I finish each part. Follow my blog for more writing advice.

Note, this post updates fairly often and old versions are still floating around out there. The most current version of this post is pinned to my blog with any new guides or links you might of missed.

As of 24 January 2021, this is the most extensive and screen reader friendly version of this post.

In which I tell you how to begin making a blind character who is more than a cardboard cutout

In which I give you a basic rundown on how to write from the perspective of a character who can’t see and still make the narration descriptive

Your blind readers will thank you for not being the 5000th person to do this and manage to actually finish your story. (Do you have any idea how many stories I’ve noped out of within two chapters because of these clichés? A Lot.)

Everything I can tell you about 1) how to learn how to use a cane 2) how a cane works 3) how to describe what your character experiences with their cane 4) everything I know on guide dogs

5 January 2021 Edit: This link has been fixed to correspond with the correct post

Or, really, very normal everyday things for blind people, the inclusion of which will make your characters more real and authentic. It’s the tiny details.

There’s no way to write a cure for your blind character that doesn’t make blind readers hate you. Sorry. We came here to finally experience a relatable character who experiences the world like us, but none of us are getting cured so seeing this character we learned to love become something alien from us in the end feels like a slap in the face

I thought I’d finally make a post explaining the complicated situation about my vision. Includes an explanation of visual snow and exotropia, two of the three causes for my vision issues.

Someone asked what being blind and falling in love have to do with each other. Honestly, blindness changes your perspective on everything and it makes an impact on every relationship you have. This includes some things that you definitely do not want your character’s love interest to be/do.

You know those flow charts of “should you do x?” going around? It’s like that, but screen reader friendly. Should you write blind jokes. It’s pretty complicated and there are a lot of possible scenarios and details to consider.

In this I discuss what I would like to see done in fanfiction with Toph’s character after ten years of reading Avatar the Last Airbender fanfiction

It’s became a popular question, so to make the answer easier/faster for everyone to access, I wrote what will usually be my initial answer. Below there are a few links to some notable past questions on this subject.

A small personal essay addressing the nuances of the mourning period you experience with a new disability. The mourning period is mentioned in other guides, but this is more detailed.

While Molly talks about the myths and truths about heightened senses, I talk about the correlation with blindness and neuro-divergency and how co-morbid disorders/disabilities might affect sensory processing.

a:tla, I’m looking at you (and my eyes aren’t blank)

My grandmother told me about her blind aunt and how she sent letters. It led me to speculate about all the O&M things people develop on their own but never get a chance to pass onto other blind people. Technology and techniques are lost in history and reinvented, including the white cane ad guide dogs.

Includes a little history on the introduction of guide dogs into the 20th century

The Minimalist Character Sheet

So I am not the biggest fan of those ten page character sheets that include 100 questions like “What’s their favourite ice cream?”. Don’t get me wrong: If those help you with your writing, more power to you! Do what works for you. But I tend to discover all the little details of a character while writing. I only need the fundamental things. Maybe this works for you too!

The Basics

  • Name: including all nicknames, titles, etc.
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Role in the Narrative
  • Physical Description: focus on defining features

GMC (If you want to learn more about the concept, check out this post.)

  • Internal Goal
  • Internal Motivation
  • Internal Conflict
  • External Goal
  • External Motivation
  • External Conflict

Personality

  • Short characterization: internal personality and external behavior
  • Their biggest failure/issue/flaw: and how it impacts their life/personality/behavior
  • Backstory: and its consequences, such as triggers
  • Speech pattern: at least three speech marks that emphasize their personality (if you want to learn more about speech patterns, check out this post)
  • Behaviour pattern: at least three habits that emphasize their personality
  • Character Arc: where do they start, how do they change, where do they end?

That’s it! Hope this gave you some pointers on how to start out with character creation.

Have fun writing!

Organic and Natural Characters

We all hate reading characters who feel forced and unnatural, but what can we do to write characters that don’t fall into the trap of acting in line with the plot rather than in an organic way?

The truth is, there is no one way to write natural characters. I did a lot of drama and acting growing up and I find that helps me get into the characters’ heads, but there are many other ways to improve the autonomy of our characters. It’s important to note that this does not just apply to main characters, but to all of your side characters, villains and antagonists as well.

  1. Take a Personality Test as Your Character. Taking the 16 personalities test as each of your characters can help you understand how they would react in different situations as it gives a detailed report in how each personality type handles everything from work to romantic relationships.
  2. Give Them a Backstory. For every character, it’s helpful to know how and where they were brought up, what lead them to be part of this book and what their history is with the main character (if they have one). This helps create a character that makes their own decisions, not just ones that benefit the plot, and this makes them feel more real.
  3. Give Them Motivations and Goals. Every character should have their own motivations that are greater than ‘because it’s what their best friend, the main character, wants’. If their motivations and goals differ slightly from the MC’s, all the better and all the more realistic!
  4. Make them flawed. Yes, every single one of your characters needs to be flawed and you should know what their exact flaw is so that you can accurately portray it. This flaw should cause problems for the characters and the plot and it should have a big impact on the story.
  5. Choose their sense of humour. The most vivid characters I’ve read are those with a sense of humour, be that dirty, dark or witty banter, characters who make jokes (even bad ones) are great fun and jump right off the page.

Hope this helped and feel free to add below!

WHERE RUN THE DEATHLESS WOLVESA WIP INTRO BY @SPRIGOFBASIL

graphics by the amazing @moariin !

“Why have you come here, Ivan Tsarevich?“
"That’s not my name,” he forced out, the words catching and dragging sharp in his throat.
She bared her teeth in a grin. “You’re the son of a tsar, aren’t you? In the end, that’s all that matters.”

GENRE: YA Fantasy, Slavic Fairytale Retelling

TYPE: Standalone (for now)

POV: Past, dual POV (third-person limited)

STATUS: Outlining

THEMES/TROPES: Fairytale logic; sword lesbians; curses and retribution; the loneliness of immortality; sibling rivalries; wars of succession; himbo and the beast; the hollow ringing of revenge

FAIRYTALES: Ivan Tsarevich and the Grey Wolf; The Death of Koschei the Deathless; Vasilisa the Beautiful

SUMMARY:

A self-avowed tsar lies on his deathbed, his crown threatening to shatter between three pairs of unfit hands. The throne will fall to the most deserving son, the one to catch the mythical firebird, and born under the shadow of his two brothers, Ivan Petrovich vows that it will be him.
Meanwhile in the far north, the motherless Vasilisa Evgenievna has always been fated for something more. She has the gift, they say, though she can’t help but wonder for what. Her city is dying, rotting from the inside out decades after its light has begun to flicker, and to save it, Vasilisa is soon saddled with a purpose greater than herself: bring back the heart of a firebird.
Taking the path of greater resistance, Ivan finds himself at the mercy of a great beast in a wolf’s skin, its secrets buried deep within its long-crumbling castle. Meanwhile, Vasilisa’s quest brings her to a hut on chicken legs, her life now in the balance of three impossible tasks. Between them, a thread of malachite through a needle.
But myths borne by flame do not make for easy prey, and the clever, foolish hunter is no better than the hunted.

CHARACTERS:

Ivan Petrovich Voronin  |  the third son, the soft-hearted prince who can’t help but want for more. Handsome and charismatic, but too honest to bear the crown he knows that he doesn’t truly want.
Vasilisa Evgenievna Lebedeva  |  the beautiful, with the name of heroines of old. Meant for greatness, the shadowed weight of her own purpose lies heavy on her shoulders despite her quest for light.
Galina Bogdanovna  |  the foundling, with no family nor hopes beyond her self-imposed debt. Her own hand grasps a glass hammer over her heart, ready to give it away to anyone who asks.
↳ Marya Morevna  |  of broken promises
Koschei Bessmertny  |  in the eye of a needle
Baba Yaga  |  of bone-legged sorcery
Mistress of the Copper Mountain  |  from malachite

tag list under cut (send an ask/dm to be +/-!):

the fifth cycle - characters

Yen looked between the three others, all at once broken and hardened and beaten and fierce. She’d imagined this moment so many times, their fated union, but in all her fantasies and daydreams, she could not have conjured such a feeling of homecoming, of relief, of a held breath finally exhaled. And though it came in a moment of defeat, they were at last united, their cycles full-circle, and Yen felt a piece of her heart slipping into place.

Out of context tag game

@akindofmagictoo thanks so much for the tag!!

rules: post an out-of-context spoiler or Big Climactic Line from your WIP and tag whoever you want. then, enjoy as people wildly guess what’s going on.

tw for references to injury

“What did they do to you?” she asked, voice too loud in the stillness of the clearing. All around them, the world seemed to come to a halt; everything stopped and started with each word spoken like a stilted symphony.
“Everything,” [redacted] said simply, unbuttoning the cuff of his shirtsleeve and tilting his inner wrist toward her. “And nothing.” His brown skin was unmarred; not a single scar remained. No physical proof of his suffering stayed.
Cesera felt sick.

I’m making this an open tag, whoever sees it and wants to do it, feel free to do it!!

My first instinct when naming the horse for my character after growing up on white focused media: oo the horse it jet black so how about stellar like interstellar????

Me, taking a second to remember that I dont have to whitewash my stories to make them digestible: lets name her Stara, the urdu word for star, that sounds so much better, more me, more my protag.

Me immediately making the royal family white/with white names: James, Henry, Eliza

Me, taking a second to think of what is really royal to me: Imran, Innaya, Muskaan

Me creating the love interest according to western beauty standards: blue eyed amaerican boy

Me creating the love interest to my cultural beauty standards/experiences: lean asian man, dark hair, deep set brown eyes, scruffy beard, very nice, sarcasm for days on end

Last Line Tag Game

I was tagged by @the-orangeauthor and a couple other people but I’ve really been putting this off until now!

They stood before a food stand, Quang holding a pouch of candied coconut while Nam exchanged money with the vendor. The stall, hung with lanterns and paper dragons, displayed a variety of festival treats: green pandan and tapioca cakes, candied fruits, red sticky rice, and more. Nam turned around with a small bamboo box lined with balled tamarind candies, then offered one up to Nam.”
Look, candy!” Nam said, popping one into his mouth.
“Ma can make these at home,” Liem chastised, but he accepted one anyways. The sweetness was almost cloying, the tamarind soft and pasty.
“I know, but she doesn’t,” Nam pointed out.
“If you spend all of your money in one place, I’m not loaning you any,” Liem warned him, but Nam shrugged off the advice.

Just a couple of lines from my latest chapter of The Fifth Cycle, wherein my characters get some peace before the coming storm. Ty for reading :)

Thank you for the tag! I’m going to tag @yejidoesthings, @the-starlit-muse, @ryns-ramblings, and @bijouxs. If anyone else wants to do it, say I tagged you!
