Snatcher Introduction Animation
[Original storyboard by and heavily based on the work of @doodledrawsthings]
It was very fun to make! The background turned out better than expected. And I learned a thing or two making this!
Unfortunately I wasn't able to clean up shot 3 and really bring it up to standard, as this was taking too long as is, but nevertheless it was a joy

It's been a while since I've drawn my boy, much less made a speedpaint video for him! I do want to draw him more often, but for some reason I just can't seem to come up with any ideas that jump at me. ^^"
I was originally going to render this more by adding shading to the characters, but I ended up loving how it kind of looked like a screenshot and left it as is. x3
Skrawl fan art in 2024? we love to see it <3
Ok so can we all recognize The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack in the discussion of modern Gothic works because like first of all
Look at this aesthetic; this dingy, watercolored art style, thatโs so morose and so unique. The show is seemingly set in the mid to late 19th century and it really captures the griminess of the time through the dim colors and almost too-realistic style at certain moments. The show brings out some interesting antiquated creepiness in other ways as well, including the bloodthirsty Doctor Barber, obsessed withย โsurgeryโ
and the fact that Captain Kโnuckles clearly has a drinking problem, thinly veiled through the use ofย โcandyโ andย โsyrupโ in the place of alcohol. The entire show just exudes โcreepyโ and uneasiness even in subtle ways. There are unexplained, potentially disturbing plot points, like the fact that Peppermint Larry has a wife made of candy who may or may not actually be sentient (and vengeful to boot).
The show also frequently uses hyper-realism and even live action in addition to the two dimensional animation, which is extremely uncanny and jarring whenever it appears.
And of course there are the countless wtf moments that throw terrifying images at the viewer and leave lasting nightmares for years to come:
Not only does this show do a fantastic job at disturbing its audience, but it also does so with endless creativity and genuinely unexpected imagery. The animation is wonderfully awful to behold and the aesthetic is refreshing and distinct (come on, nautical and gothic?? Whatโs not to love?). Plus, the strange and dark humor is brilliantly written and leaves you laughing even in the moments that creep you out the most. If you havenโt seen the show at all, or at least havenโt seen it in many years, definitely give it a watch and add a new piece of the Gothic to your collection.
something else I also always like to remind everyone about Flapjack is that without it, we wouldnโt have Gravity Falls, Regular Show or Over the Garden Wall. the creators of all 3 of those were major creative forces behind this show before they got their own. a lot of people credit Adventure Time for starting the TV animation renaissance of the early 2010s but I will insistently argue Flapjack was equally if not more important.
Legitimately and unironically, as someone who's taken several art college character design classes taught by former Disney animators, there's absolutely nothing wrong with Bill humanizations where he's skinny. In fact, I always thought him being scrawny and twiggy with no muscle noodle limbs perfectly suited his character. A silly little triangle guy is not physically intimidating so it really works when this is reflected in his build whenever he's reimagined as a human, honestly the more he looks like Stan and Ford could easily beat the snot out of him the better lmao
Of course, body type diversity is great too, but I wish "twink Bills" got a little more credit especially when they successfully apply other principles of excellent character design. If your human Bill has a strong silhouette and his shape language is screaming triangles then you're doing everything right.
