his smile was as radiant as the summer sun cresting against the horizon, tucking itself away from the view of man and something that was meant only for your eyes.

yoshino junpei had a hard exterior that kept most people at bay—but you had never been most people, and you soon found a friend in him that was irreplaceable. afraid of being his only friend, you were almost relieved when he’d told you stories of an itadori: a boy your age that was bright like sunshine and made him laugh until his sides hurt.

when he told you about mahito, and consequentially leaving his side as a lackey, you had let out a breath you hadn’t realized was lodged in your throat—it had suffocated you and forced you to hold your head above water, hoping the waves of yoshino wouldn’t drown you. the relief and tension that left your shoulders when he had pulled you into his arms, had whispered the soft words of ‘i’m not with him anymore, i promise’ was worth more than anything you could imagine.

you were afraid of the future he would have had if he had followed down that path, avoiding his friends and his own desires to become a jujutsu sorcerer if he continued to grasp at the shadow of mahito.

watching him smile and laugh at movie references that only yoshino and itadori understood, you were loathe to imagine a timeline where you weren’t able to see him shine as bright as he was capable.
