Only in Miami

@only-in-miami / only-in-miami.tumblr.com

This blog is dedicated to the city I love...Miami! I will be posting gorgeous pics of spots around the city. I'll also be posting about all the things that makes Miami such a unique place to live in!

As someone that has grown up surrounded by beaches and done surf life saving, I know how the sea works. Lots of people dont. Every summer multiple tourists die here because they don’t respect the sea, if you’re going to the coast, here’s a thing I saw on Facebook.

The production team for The Prince of Egypt conferred with roughly 600 religious experts to make the film as accurate as possible.

I’m pretty sure I heard somewhere that The Prince of Egypt is actually the only Exodus-inspired movie to get approval from leaders of all three of the major religions that share the story- Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

From Wikipedia:

“Because DreamWorks was concerned about theological accuracy, Jeffrey Katzenberg decided to call in Biblical scholars, Christian, Jewish and Muslim theologians, and Arab American leaders to help his film be more accurate and faithful to the original story. After previewing the developing film, all these leaders noted that the studio executives listened and responded to their ideas, and praised the studio for reaching out for comment from outside sources.[6]”

So what happened since then for DreamWorks to stop the practice of speaking to experts?

Actually, Miles Morales isn’t biracial, he’s black. His mom is black, at least I think she’s supposed to be black, “Latine” isn’t a race, Latines come in all races, there are Asian Latines. Someone with a black gringo parent and a black Latine parent is black, Miles is black AND Latino

Rio is complicated because she kind of changes in the comics? She is simply called Puerto Rican in most descriptions of her. But, like OP said- that doesn’t mean she isn’t black. Latino/Hispanic are not race classifications- the ‘race’ of Central Americans would be Native American. How she is drawn in a lot of comics lead me to believe that she wasn’t meant to be black in those instances. But, there isn’t a single way to “look black” so that isn’t necessarily a fair judgement. That being said: Miles’ wiki itself literally calls him Afro-latino, but I can’t tell if they mean it by that term based on the source it uses. Is he half Puerto Rican and half African American? Yes, definitely. That is a canonical fact. But, it doesn’t mean he’s biracial. There are tons of sources that say he is half black half Hispanic- which I’m guessing means they are referring to being related to Indigenous peoples (which is ironic given the Spain part). But? We don’t know. Are they equating black and African American? Probably. Miles is complicated. I would be interested in knowing what he would refer to himself as.

tldr: race classifications make Miles Morales complicated because it leaves the descriptions of his race up to massive interpretation. The art of Rio (his mom) is inconsistent. He could be biracial, he might not be. But there is very little evidence to prove OP wrong so? Why not.

Hey! You added a pretty good addition but I would like to correct that not all Central Americans are indigenous, most people here are mestizo/e- usually with high indigenous ancestry in many cases, but often not directly identifying as indigenous because of generations of hispanicized assimilation. There are many indigenous people here in Central America, but they have their own separate cultures and in many of the countries here they have a mixed relationship with mestizo/es. So yes, a lot of people here have very high indigenous ancestry, but it doesn’t make us necessarily Indigenous if that makes sense.

Honestly, if you ever meet us Afro-Latino people out there in the world just ask what we prefer 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️

This is extremely case by case and I’ll give you an example:

I’m Colombian and Haitian, and I consider myself Afro Latina, but I’m definitely not biracial in any sense of the word. Why? Because my Colombian mother is black and my Haitian dad is black too. But I call myself Afro Latina because I’m black from all angles and also happen to have heritage from a Latino country. So the Latino part is the adjective to the Afro-.

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

Native Colombians will give you a totallyyyyyyyyy different opinion. Some people in my generation of Colombians totally have embraced the Afro-Colombian description and really celebrate it, even if they are mixed (for example my cousin is legit more indigenous than she is black but she still identified as AC. Which actually makes me wonder- is one a mestizo only if the original Spanish Inquisition gen were the ones doing the mixing???). So in this scenario, the Afro describes the Latino.

But then the older generations tend to reject the idea of ‘Afro’ because up until like 5 years ago, all Colombians just referred to themselves as Colombians regardless of race. This is a new concept/identity movement. Like the young gen wants to celebrate their afrodescendecia but then the older gen feels like they were already doing that???? Like this gen puts more priority in identifying as Colombian, but this likely varies region to region only because Colombians on the coast celebrate their African heritage so much they don’t feel the need to identify as African. Which I totally get. And honestly, I’ve met ALOT of people who don’t identify as Afro-Latino even if they are (like native one black, one white parent from whatever country) because they just identify as their nationality.

I could never go to Australia because dingos look like normal dogs and I couldn’t trust myself not to try to pet them.

I’ve actually pet a dingo at a zoo and lemme tell you if I was in Australia I wouldn’t know them from a regular dog until it opened its mouth. They’re super soft. So are kangaroos
