It was - get rid of Wiress (and also show the world what she’s become) because she never should have won (and we’ll show people what happens when you think you’re smarter than the Capitol)

It was - get rid of Johanna Mason, we killed everyone she loved and it didn’t break her enough so now we can’t control her

And of course, it was - get rid of those rebels from 12

But it wasn’t just punishment for Katniss. She had no idea how influential and volatile of a group they were.

Honestly, I feel like the 3rd Quell might have actually worked if the Capitol hadn’t decided to just send all the most rebellious and threatening victors into them. You can’t put 10+ people who rebelled in their own games back into an arena (and this time they’re all together) and expect it to go well for you???

Katniss is such an unreliable narrator. She says "Then something unexpected happens. At least, I don't expect it because I don't think of District 12 as a place that cares about me" girl you deliver strawberries to the Mayor, you hunt and trade for the district, when you fell at Prim being chosen someone caught you, when you went to Prim people parted for you, when you volunteered EVERYONE stopped. Idk how to tell you but I think you're a pillar of the community.

Hmm actually Lucy Gray is different from Haymitch and Katniss and Peeta because her tragedy is she caused the games to continue. If the games hadn't become entertaining, they wouldn't have continued and she made it entertaining because she was an entertainer - she saved herself but she doomed dozens more because she performed too well and it allowed the Capitol to make the games a performance in the later years. Haymitch's tragedy is that he couldn't end the games, Lucy Gray's is that she continued them.

It always made me wonder how much convincing it took for the existing victors to help Katniss/Peeta in CF but now we know it wasn’t about her at all. They were doing it for Haymitch.

Ok but can we talk about the fact that we now have a very specific reason for WHY Haymitch called Katniss ‘sweetheart’ and it was never something that he intended to be condescending or mean?

Like that’s what he called Louella, who he loved like a sister and was killed before she even made it to the arena. And when Katniss started coming to the Hob after Burdock died in the mines, she wore her hair in two braids and it reminded Haymitch of Louella, who wore her hair in two braids. And then when she volunteered, the old nickname slipped out.

lenore dove must’ve loved and idolized lucy gray a lot. she wore pieces of her old clothes to honor her and her love of color, she told haymitch that all covey girls have a little mystery to them, she refused to talk about her as a victor. i wonder how much she heard about lucy gray from her uncles and if she felt a deep connection with her despite never having met her

I didn’t expect the Louella story line. I really didn’t. And then when it happened, I couldn’t stop thinking about Peeta’s storyline. They both came back changed. Only, Haymitch knew that Louella wasn’t even Louella. Did he think the same about Peeta? At least in the beginning, was he doubting which Peeta came back? Who came back? Can you imagine how terrified he’d have been with the sheer idea of having to tell Katniss that it wasn’t really him?

‪a few chapters into sunrise on the reaping and the conclusion I’m coming to is that while katniss keeps *a lot* to herself, 16 year-old haymitch was a chronic oversharer. he dropped in ONE chapter more of the entire district’s lore than she did in 3 books

Imagine Asterid resenting Haymitch for how he cut everyone he loved off after Lenore dove died, only to understand him when Burdock died.
