YOU CANNOT HIDE THAT IN THE TAGS
Thinking about what Exit Strategy was like from the POV of the human security person who let Mensah through the security barrier because Murderbot said "Please, they will kill her"
It must have been a rough day. The stand off had been going on for days and your bosses are breathing down everyoneโs neck and then everything stops hovering on the edge and plummets straight to shitville.
Nobody knows what happened. People are scrambling. Why did the cameras go out in sector k58? Wait, cameras in Zone B are compromised. Shit! GrayCris has deployed its SecUnits! Initiate lockdown! Initiate lockdown! Clear everyone out!
Someone calls out that they have regained control of the cameras. GrayCris demands total lockdown of the station. They claim that Dr. Ayda Mensah has used a dangerous rogue SecUnit to attempt to leave the station. They claim it has already killed people.
There is shouting and all caps messages in the feed. Dr. Mensah and the rogue SecUnit have made it to the public docks. Itโs sealed off. You pressed the button as soon as your boss ordered lockdown. Dr. Mensah is trapped. You can see GrayCrisโs SecUnits on route. You have done your job.
A message comes over the feed. It is not one of yours. Youโve memorized all your coworkers even the robots. This one is using the prepackage voice that everyone ditches after they install the audio.
โI am a contracted SecUnit with an endangered client. I am trying to reach the shuttle at dock in slot alt7A.โ
You thought that rogue SecUnits would sound scarier. Deep and growly like a horror monster. Thatโs what they were right? Horror movies come to life by the deep pockets of mega corporations who didnโt put tight enough leashes on their attack dogs. Rogue SecUnits shouldnโt sound like you trying to convince your boss that cutting the security staff in half was a really bad idea.
โPlease, they will kill her.โ
Your hands hover above the keys. You canโt raise the barrier. The shitstorm that would happenโฆGrayCris would make sure you and every one of your descendants would never hold a job again. But the robot is right. If GrayCris intended to retake Dr. Mensah alive they wouldnโt have sent SecUnits after her.
โLet my client go through the gate and Iโll stay here.โ
A SecUnit should not sound that alive. It shouldnโt sound like it has run through every scenario and determined that surviving wasnโt an option.
โPlease.โ The audio crackled. You know the audio crackled. It is prepackage garbage. It always crackles. It shouldnโt think about how it sounds like your own voice breaking in desperation.
โThey will kill her.โ
It takes five buttons to raise the barrier.
Everyone thinks the doors have been hacked. Scans are run again and again. They come back clean as Dr. Mensah slides under the barrier. Three buttons to slam it back into place.
This is when everyone clues in. You have never heard your boss scream that loudly. Threats and promises ring in your ears. It only stops when the rogue SecUnit goes on the offensive. GrayCrisโs SecUnits arrive, the lights go out, GrayCris deploys killware into the stationโs systems, and everyone has bigger problems to deal with.
You do nothing. Youโve been pushed out of your chair. The floor is cold but you find a corner to nurse the bruises you just got. As you watch the chaos through the feed, you can see members of the Preservation group tear into the manual release for the door like you had torn into the fire suppressant systems when a fire had broken out in Zone C and they hadnโt engaged.
Your family lives in Zone C.
Youโre not sure what a SecUnit is anymore. Maybe youโll never know. Maybe you lost everything falling for staticky audio clips. But as you watch the Preservation men hooked their arms around the rogue SecUnitโs shoulders, you canโt help but think youโve saved more than one person today.
As she has finally made her glorious first appearance in our D&D campaign, I can finally share. Meet Charlotte, former enchanted lamp, now an unholy combination of opossum and seagull, and soon-to-be warlock familiar. Many, many thanks to @spindlewit, who yet again took a bizarre prompt from me and turned it into something absolutely amazing.
Listen All Systems Red is so so funny from Gurathins perspective imagine you grew up with Space Socialism and was hired to go help some pal with science but you weren't allowed to go unless you rented AmaTeslas Torment Nexus Alexa Dot and then when you get there you find out a whole continent of people got annihilated by their Tourment Nexus rentals so you take a moment to check yours quickly and find out it already had disengaged its Don't Kill People box, the only thing you've ever been told prevented them from mass homiciding their clients, something that LITERALLY just happened to people you knew a day ago, and when you say to your fellow socialist doctors HEY I think our Tourment Nexus is fucked up and it's files said it killed dozens of people barely a year ago and we should probably get the hell away from it the same doctors are like look at what you're saying. You're hurting the Tourment Nexus' feelings. The Tourment Nexus is just a little construct who likes Netflix Gurathin stop antagonizing it on the plane ride.
I'm sorry I'm stuck on the part where you seem to be calling the Corporation Rim 'space socialism'.
That's because I'm not, it's referring to preservation.
When the preservation responder finally arrives Mensah could have said anything but when she was put in touch with Secunit the first thing she says is I'm here. Not a request for a report no assertions but I'm here. I dropped everything I was doing so I could be here. The most important things to convey is that no matter what happened and what the news is I'm here and ready and that comes first over anything else. That when she was desperate and vulnerable and powerless on tranrollnhyfa SecUnits mere presence was so immense, so powerful it changed everything and gave her hope, and she would be there to return the favor and protect her loved ones (INCLUDING SECUNIT, even if it doesn't believe so) no matter what until the day she dies.
