This update would make Tumblr permanently obstructive to users if they don’t roll it back.
Because of this update, it’s harder for the app to load and it will freeze and close on your device much more often. Say goodbye to having multiple pages open at once. Most users will suffer from this, especially if they don’t have access to a device with a lot of data.
The follow buttons are way bigger and easier to hit by accident, and are so obstructive on a phone they can cut off part of an op’s username. The size of the usernames actually make it more difficult for disabled users to process the text of a post.
And edit and delete buttons are now hidden in the meatball menu on your own posts so it’s less easy to use and you have to scroll up to the top of a post to edit it every time.
And most users can’t press and slide the reblog icon to do a quick reblog anymore. Quick queue has been removed. Nor can they edit the tags on their own posts without having to rewrite all the tags from scratch.
We need to tell staff this!! Send some actual complaints to them, which you are allowed and able to do! It’s the only way not to make the app even more inaccessible to users permanently!!
Go to Settings -> General settings -> help -> contact support and select Feedback and write an official complaint threatening to take your business elsewhere in turn decreasing traffic (and shareholder value) unless tumblr changes the UI back.
And tell them everything about this update is designed to make the website and app harder to use, which makes it less attractive to new users. Every UI update is them trying to imitate other websites, like Twitter, to catch new users from them. So tell them it was ease of use in the first place that made people enjoy Tumblr despite its flaws. And making it more difficult to use, imitating the flaws of other websites that people complain about, as opposed to their strengths, will drive away both potential, new, and old users.
If you don’t know what to write, you can just use and tweak the above paragraphs. That’s what I did in my report.
If you’ve seen this text before, it’s because I’m pasting it around on multiple of my posts to spread. Send complaints to them, quickly, while the update is still new and they can be convinced to roll it back like with some of the others in the past. The difference was time! Do it now!

This is something that came up in a Cultural Anthropology class I took, on the concept of gifting.
Long and the short of it is that it is better to give things without a firm price tag to it (like cash or gift cards) because then even if we give something back to that person we each feel a little indebted to one another.
If i gave you 20$ on your birthday and you give me a 20$ gift card on mine then in our minds we are perfectly square and that is one less tie that binds us.
But little favors between people? Ones that may or may not even out over time? Those bring people together.

how i'm handling my students using AI to write papers:
-don't accuse them on using AI from the get-go and instead ask them to informally define all the huge words that they used in their essay which i know they don't know the meaning of
-ask to see their original file where they "wrote" the essay. go to version history to see if it was just copy and pasted and then just edited a bit. i keep an eye out for the shit like "certainly! here's an essay about...."
-if they own up to it, they can re-do the assignment for a higher grade even if there will be an automatic penalty. if they don't, i process it like plagiarism and get my supervisor involved.
And this is much better than the immediate accusations. Some students have a good vocabulary. Stop accusing them of faking their essays without proof, and this is a good way to check.
Fellow students please stop using AI, go back to promising not to kill the school nerd if they do all your homework or something.
If you were not aware, edits and version history are visible in word documents. For both work and school documents, I work in one document, writing and organizing and polishing and editing and putting in filler like "PUT QUOTE HERE" or "I HATE THIS FUCKING PRODUCT" and then when I need to present the document to other people I copy the whole text and paste it into a clean document with no history so that people can't look back over my early versions or angsty mid-process meltdowns.
However, I *do not* delete the original version, it's good practice to keep your work document to show that you, you know, worked on the document in case something like this ever comes up.
Just a heads up, both for people who didn't know about version histories and for people who might be deleting their working files after finishing their projects.
Someone brought up to me the other day that it might be risky for me to publish my "how to find hardware" document on tumblr if it's something I created at the behest of my job; part of the reason I'm not concerned about that is because the original worked document was created in 2018 and has been sporadically worked on since, so I can conclusively prove that the public document I'm creating is not sharing work product for a project assigned to me in 2025.
If you're a single issue feminist and you want to raise your son to respect women but you also use authoritarian parenting, you're pretty much guaranteeing that your son will be sexist. If you demand that he respect women and also demand that he respect authority, and if you call it "disrespect" when he yells at you in direct response to you yelling at him first, then you're pretty much guaranteeing that he won't take complaints of "disrespect" seriously.
If you rule with an iron fist and make him afraid of you, you're pretty much guaranteeing that he won't respect anyone who can't make him afraid of them, and the vast majority of women who he disrespects are not going to be able to make him afraid.
If you want him to question society's harmful attitudes against women, you also have to raise him to question society's harmful attitudes that benefit you. This includes society's harmful attitudes against children.
