The internet is a fun place. In researching Victorian era newspaper agony columns, I found this article that has a link to a dataset for actual London Times agony column postings from 1860-1879.

I thought it would be fun to write a little Holmes fic using secret coded messages from real agony column postings... and then I wrote a 15-chapter fic about the Hiatus. If you're into epistolary sad/angst with a happy ending, want to read stuff Victorians put in the newspaper, love when Mycroft makes an appearance in a fic, or are just a sucker for a Hiatus story, then enjoy.

A huge thank you to @julienbakerstreet for reading this and cheering me on!

The Empty House - part 3

"I moved my head to look at the cabinet behind me. When I turned again Sherlock Holmes was standing smiling at me across my study table. I rose to my feet, stared at him for some seconds in utter amazement, and then it appears that I must have fainted for the first and the last time in my life. Certainly a grey mist swirled before my eyes, and when it cleared I found my collar-ends undone and the tingling after-taste of brandy upon my lips. Holmes was bending over my chair, his flask in his hand. “My dear Watson,” said the well-remembered voice, “I owe you a thousand apologies."

also - shoutout to @haedraulics for doing a sketch of mid-hiatus Holmes with long hair that captivated my heart so much I needed to include that idea!

there's some kind of a capella happening in my mentions

On the Origin of (Phallic) Tree Worship

Picture is text from EMPT which reads: “As I did so I struck against an elderly, deformed man, who had been behind me, and I knocked down several books which he was carrying. I remember that as I picked them up, I observed the title of one of them, The Origin of Tree Worship, and it struck me that the fellow must be some poor bibliophile, who, either as a trade or as a hobby, was a collector of obscure volumes.”

Just casually looked up Victorian tree worship (as you do) and came across this…

“…A Descriptive Account of Phallic Tree Worship, published anonymously in 1890. The fourth entry in a ten-volume “Phallic Series” printed privately in limited number…”

Obscure volumes, indeed…

hi, a lot of you need a perspective reset

  • the average human lifespan globally is 70+ years
  • taking the threshold of adulthood as 18, you are likely to spend at least 52 years as a fully grown adult
  • at the age of 30 you have lived less than one quarter of your adult life (12/52 years)
  • 'middle age' is typically considered to be between 45-65
  • it is extremely common to switch careers, start new relationships, emigrate, go to college for the first or second time, or make other life-changing decisions in middle age
  • it's wild that I even have to spell it out, but older adults (60+) still have social lives and hobbies and interests.
  • you can still date when you get old. you can still fuck. you can still learn new skills, be fashionable, be competitive. you can still gossip, you can still travel, you can still read. you can still transition. you can still come out.
  • young doesn't mean peaked. you're inexperienced in your 20s! you're still learning and practicing! you're developing social skills and muscle memory that will last decades!
  • there are a million things to do in the world, and they don't vanish overnight because an imaginary number gets too big

gooosh The Priory School. Watson shushing Mrs Hudson and keeping quiet because Holmes is sleeping/thinking on the settee and then slipping the note into Holmes' breast pocket. the gentle touch on Watson's shoulder when Holmes tells him to go and pack. the absolute sassiness of Huxtable's "you may have heard of it" and Holmes' nonchalant "no". the landscape? the locations? Holmes and Watson strolling through the moors together, and Watson's monologue up on the hill when Holmes isn't paying attention, and the look on Holmes' face when he realizes that Watson's hungry, and when he tells him that there is a hostel just down the road - utterly priceless. and the confrontation Watson has with Hayes, and Holmes' tender looks and curious glances as he watches how Watson handles the conversation? and THEN, who allowed Jeremy Brett to be SUCH a diva?? like, he walks around with his deerstalker and a scarf, and I've never before seen a man that is so obviously not straight. and he rides a horse?? and a bicycle?? in a single episode?? what the hell even??

I’m always so fascinated by how Watson accidentally became an interesting character. He was supposed to be a blank slate! Narratively he’s just there to follow Holmes around and ask questions

and then stuff just. Kept being added and we slowly start getting the outlines of an interesting character seemingly by accident. His army time ptsd, his war wound, his relationship with his brother, his want to follow Holmes around and solve crimes with him + his insistence that he’s not that interesting and he’s sooo normal, him canonically telling us he’s an unreliable narrator in the sense of changing names and then all of ACD’s story inconsistencies accidentally creating ‘the game’, “three continents Watson” + how the hell many times has this been man been married, him canonically being a hunk, his gambling problem, the fact that the fanon of his middle name being ‘Hamish’ is so well accepted because ACD forgot his first name, the list goes on

Re watched The Naval Treaty this morning and God it is so soothing to me! The English countryside in summer, Holmes in his light tan suit, the gloves that match, the rich velvet bow tie, the hat. Just looking hot as hell.

Watson showing his Adam's apple like a damn whore.

The whole episode is just pleasing. The beautiful sick room and the way Holmes presents the treaty in a tray for breakfast like the dramatic ass he is. All simply stunning. One of my favorite episodes!

So many modern detectives have tried to emulate Sherlock Holmes, and none of them have even come CLOSE to touching Benoit Blanc. That man is Holmes' true spiritual successor. He's a silly little guy. He's gay. He's a drama queen. He has impeccable fashion sense. He loves music. He works with the cops but refuses to work for them. His voice is both goofy and incredibly fun to listen to. He sucks at playing Clue and Among Us. He mopes in the bathtub for weeks when he doesn't have a case. He loves hanging out with The Girls but gets incredibly uncomfortable when women flirt with him. The only reason he can afford his gorgeous downtown apartment is because his husband works a real job.* The only thing he hates more than Rich Assholes are Stupid Rich Assholes. He solved a double (attempted triple) homicide and the thing that made him most upset was plagiarism. He supports women's rights and women's wrongs. He refuses to break the law himself but actively encourages his client to commit arson.

And, most importantly, he and Holmes would fucking love each other. If most of the modern day detectives inspired by Holmes ever met him, he would probably want to kill them with hammers, but he and Blanc would probably end up being penpals and sending each other newspaper clippings about crime or some shit. And I can absolutely envision a teenage Blanc reading the Holmes stories and being like, "Wait, being a silly little gay private detective is a viable career option? Well, I guess I've finally found my calling in life."

Anyway I love the Benoit Blanc movies and I hope they make a million of them
