THE CROOKED, THE NECROMANCER / wip reintroduction by @perditism

“Can you tell me,” Ophelia swallowed against her scratchy throat. She didn’t know if she wanted the answer, didn’t know why she cared. “Tell me if you are like Isobel. If you’ve killed.”
Ophelia thought the Morningstar would laugh it off and avoid the question, the way she envisioned in her head, but it made him pause, as if she had robbed him of his breath. His hood slid over his eyes as he, like on the cusp of sharing a secret, lowered his head.
“Is that what you think of me?”
Ophelia answered truthfully, “I don’t know what to think of you.”
The Morningstar seemed like someone who valued secrecy above all else, but at that moment, it felt as if his mystery had disappointed him. His shoulders drooped a little, a secret defeat. An unexpected, dull ache pulled at Ophelia.
“I have never killed,” the Morningstar said. Before Ophelia could feel her heart soar in relief, his chin tipped, and she could see his jaw clenched painfully tight. “But I’ve done bad things. Did you expect any different?”

I think I found my new favorite rabbit hole. This voice actor does Shakespeare scenes in a southern accent and I need to see the whole damn play. Absolutely beautiful

if you're not from the us american south, there's some amazing nuances to this you may have missed. i can't really describe all of them, because i've lived here my whole life and a lot of the body language is sort of a native tongue thing. the body language is its own language, and i am not so great at teaching language. i do know i instinctively sucked on my lower teeth at the same time as he did, and when he scratched the side of his face, i was ready to take up fucking arms with him.

but y'all. the way he said "brutus is an honourable man" - each and every time it changed just a little. it was the full condemnation Shakespeare wanted it to be. it started off slightly mock sincere. barely trying to cover the sarcasm. by the end...it wasn't a threat, it was a promise.

christ, he's good.

the eliding of “you all” to “y’all” while still maintaining 2 syllables is a deliberate and brilliant act of violence. “bear with me” said exactly like i’ve heard it at every funeral. the choices of breaking and re-establishing of eye contact. the balance of rehearsed and improvised tone. A+++ get this man a hollywood contract.

''childhood friends to lovers'' this ''childhood enemies to lovers'' that ok but what about ''we were in the same class in middle school and we probably had a crush on each other but we weren't friends and we weren't enemies in fact we barely even talked yet for some reason we couldn't keep our eyes off of each other'' to lovers

something about reuniting years later, not knowing how to react or if you read the signs wrong and you're both too afraid to ask, but there's this unspoken connection between the two of you that keeps on pulling you toward one another, because it's been years since we last saw each other and we've both lived our separate lives, but we've both caught ourselves thinking back to our time in middle school, wondering about what if things would have turned out differently between us

At least 304 people have died after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti Saturday morning, according to the country’s civil protection service.

More than 1,800 people were injured, the service added.

The US Geological Survey previously said it was likely that casualties would be “high,” saying the “disaster is likely widespread.”

One hospital in the southern city of Jeremie said it is overwhelmed with patients.

“There are a lot of people coming in – a lot of people,” an administrator at the Hopital Saint Antoine told CNN. “We don’t have enough supplies.”

The hospital has set up tents in its courtyard, the administrator said.

The earthquake was about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) northeast of Saint-Louis-du-Sud and 10 kilometers deep, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

“There are reports of significant damage to homes, roads, and infrastructure,” American Red Cross spokeswoman Katie Wilkes said.

Martine Moise, the first lady of Haiti, said her heart “hurts” after receiving news about the earthquake, which caused enormous damage south of Grand’Anse.

“The initial information that I have received from Grand’Anse is heart-wrenching,” the first lady said. “It hurts my heart for the kids, the mothers, the elderlies, the handicaps, my friends, and all the victims of this earthquake.”

“My brothers and sisters, we have to put our shoulders together to come together to demonstrate our solidarity. It is our togetherness that makes up our strength and resilience. Courage, I will always be by your side.” Moise added.

Videos posted on social media offer a glimpse of the widespread destruction. One from Les Cayes shows a street strewn with rubble and what is left of a number of buildings. Dust fills the air.

A man in the video said that he was lucky that the building he was in did not collapse, but many other houses in the area did.

“There are a lot of wounded on the street,” he said.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, left between 220,000 and 300,000 people dead and injured hundreds of thousands more. That was 13 kilometers deep.  …

some puzzling writing hot takes i’ve encountered:

  • genre fiction is fascist. the only ideologically pure fiction is slice-of-life with no plot.
  • any book with more than one sex scene is erotica
  • romance novels encourage women to have unrealistic fantasies, like “having enjoyable sex” and “being apologized to”
  • describing a female character’s body for any reason, even during a sex scene where her love interest’s body is described too, means you’re a gross male writer who doesn’t understand women
  • if the protagonist is an anti-hero or morally gray, each chapter should have a disclaimer detailing all of said protagonist’s moral failings

I can add at least one more, from someone I unfollowed last week because of it:

- if anything bad happens to any of your characters for any reason, it’s because you have unprocessed trauma and you should stop writing fiction and go to therapy

i’m pretty sure this post has cost me 3 followers by now, which would be upsetting, but I’m honestly just surprised anyone who agreed with these takes was following me in the first place

hey I’m bug (22 they/them). I’m black/iranian, trans and I’m giving birth in 5 weeks! I’ve been living in hotels the past 2 weeks and finally secured housing that I can move into on the 13th. instead of calling an ‘evil’ character a psychopath, sociopath, psychotic, narcissistic  or etc. use any of these words instead:

  • self-centered
  • violent
  • manipulative
  • remorseless
  • wicked
  • cunning
  • mean
  • abusive
  • dangerous
  • corrupt
  • morally corrupt
  • insensitive
  • bully
  • foul
  • vile
  • cruel
  • aggressive
  • threatening
  • brutal
  • vicious
  • rampaging
  • out of control

because there are so many ways to describe someone as ‘bad’ than by assigning them a misunderstood, demonised personality disorder and if i see anyone using personality disorders as substitutes for evil then you’re getting blocked plain and simple.

Everyone always insist on arguing this point, so here’s another example.

Would you call a character autistic because you don’t like them? Would you call a character autistic to show how evil and terrible they are as a person?

No, of course you wouldn’t.

Then why do you think it’s okay to call them a sociopath or psychopath?
