Goose: I miss my wife
Maverick: what am I not good enough for you
Goose: no you are sugar, I just want Carole
Maverick: yeah, I do too Nick
Pete was on his first day of shore leave in Pensacola, it was about midnight and he had been asleep until his phone started ringing. A name flashed on to the screen, Mercedes, Ice's daughter was calling him.
“Hello, Maverick speaking.”
“Hey Mav,” Mercedes said, “Sorry for calling you so late but Dad's in the hospital, he's been asking for you since he got admitted.”
“Oh God, what's wrong?” Maverick asks, panic seeping into his voice.
“We're not sure yet, but he's had a really bad cough for the past couple months and today he started coughing blood so we got him admitted before it got worse.”
“Okay, I'll be on the next flight to Lemoore.”
Maverick hung up and jumped up to start getting ready.
When Pete arrives in Lemoore the first thing he does is call Mercedes, it goes straight to voicemail. He tries again, she still doesn't pick up. Next he tries Jack, Jack picks up on the 3rd ring.
“Jack Kazansky speaking,” Jack answered sleepily.
“Hey, Jack, it's Maverick.” Pete replies.
“Oh, hey Mav, is there a reason why you're calling me.”
“Uh yeah, your sister called me and told me that your dad was in the hospital.”
“Oh, um, yeah, I don't know why she called you, he's probably fine,” Jack said in an unreadable tone of voice.
“Well, your sister seemed pretty worried,” Maverick said. “Anyways, my plane just landed in Lemoore. I was wondering if I could get a ride since I don't have one.”
“Uh, yeah I guess, I'll be there in 20.”
20 minutes later Pete was sitting next to Jack in his pickup truck, the radio humming in the background.
“So, how have you been?” Maverick asks, trying to break the uncomfortable silence.
“Fine.” Jack grunts.
“How's your mom?”
“Dead.”
“Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.” Pete said, unsure of how to react. “She was a good woman.”
“Yeah, you don't have to act sorry Pete, I know you and my dad have some weird lovers thing going on, you don't have to hide it from me anymore.”
“What?” Pete questions, “Me and you're dad, we're not, no.”
The truck stops at a stop sign and Jack looks over at Pete. “Look, Maverick, I know you and my dad are in love and have been in love since you met, there's no point in even trying to deny it now that my mom's dead. Isn't that what you and my dad have been waiting for? For her to not be around anymore so you can have your weird homoerotic relationship publicly?”
The car starts moving again as Maverick and Jack fall into an even more uncomfortable silence than the first one.
About 5 minutes later Pete breaks it. “For the record I wasn't aware that I was in love with your dad until 2001, which was 15 years after I met him and at least 7 years after he met your mom and 5 years after you were born and 3 years after your sister was born. Not that that helps. And this also probably doesn't help but if anything I was happy that your dad married your mom, if he hadn't there was a good chance one if not both of us would have been dishonorably discharged.”
Jack seemingly ignored what Pete said. Maverick knew his comment wouldn't help yet he'd still opened his big mouth, that makes everything worse.
It was a long quiet ride the rest of the way to the hospital. The moment the car stopped Pete jumped out and started heading inside.
“I'm here to see Kazansky, Thomas Kazansky,” Maverick blurted the moment he reached the front desk.
The lady behind the desk looked tired as she asked “What's your relation to Mr. Kazansky?”
Pete reaches up and grabs the chain around his neck and pulls his dog tags out and shows one of them to the nurse.
“Military people.” She says under her breath before telling him, “Room 109, down the hall on the right, the door is on the left side.”
“Thanks,” Pete said before tearing off down the hall.
When Pete reached Tom’s door he paused in front of it staring at it like it was gonna open on its own, or try and kill him if he touched it. Finally Pete reached for the door handle and opened the door.
Maverick walked through the door and looked towards the bed in the room. His breath caught in his throat. Ice was lying back on a pile of pillows white as the blanket covering him. There was a pile of tissues on the bedside table, Pete could see blood on at least 5 of them.
“Hey, how ya doing Ice?” Pete asked, worry thick in his voice.
Ice cleared his throat before speaking, “About as well as I can be Mav.”
Maverick approached his bed, “Well that’s good, I wouldn’t expect any less from my wingman.”
“Where are you expecting flattery like that to get you?”
“A spot on the bed next to you maybe?”
Tom scooted over to make room for Pete on the bed, patting the empty space beside him.
“Thanks,” Pete grunted, sitting down next to Ice.
Tom rested his head against Pete’s shoulder.
“I heard about Sarah, I’m sorry I wasn’t there when it happened.” Pete said.
“It’s fine Mav, it’s not like you could have done anything.”
Pete nodded, “I still feel bad though. But that’s not the most important thing right now, what have they decided is wrong with you?”
Tom paused for a second, “They think it's throat cancer.”
Pete's breath catches in his throat. He knows what cancer can do to a person, he watched Carole wither away with sickness, he imagines Ice going through the same thing and starts tearing up at the thought. Pete doesn't want to watch that happen to Tom, to his wingman, he can't watch that happen.
“Are they sure?” Pete asks, his voice as strong as he can force it to be.
“No,” Tom says, “But they're pretty sure that's what it is”
“No,” Pete sobs, “No it can't be, I can't go through this shit again, I can't watch another one of my friends die while I stand by helplessly. This can't be happening.”
Just then Mercedes walks through the door.
“Oh, uh, do you want me to leave?” Mercedes asked politely
“No,” Maverick said, wiping his eyes, “Stay.”
“Okay,” Mercedes said grabbing the bedside chair and pulling it up next to the bed.
“I saw Jack in the waiting room,” Mercedes commented. “He said he told you about mom.” She said to Maverick.
Ice and Mav have one more meeting before Ice dies.
Maverick sat at Ice's bedside. Ice has gotten so much worse in the few days since Maverick has seen him.
"How's work?" Ice asks
"Same old same old, I think Bradley hates me more than he did when he wasn't ever seeing me" Mav replies, a noticeable quaver in his voice.
Ice nods thoughtfully ignoring the shake in Maverick's voice for his own sake as much as Maverick's, "He's probably just unsure of how to feel after being mad at you for so long without you being there, it's probably different now that you're around him more" Ice comments reasonably.
"Yeah, you're probably right," Mav said, "You usually are."
"You flatter me, Maverick." Ice replies, "I thought you gave up on flirting with me years ago, as in when I married Sarah."
"I always gotta try and shoot my shot Ice," Mav shoots back, "Anyways you love my antics."
Ice puts a finger on his chin thoughtfully, "I suppose you're right, seeing as I haven't stopped bailing you out of trouble all the time."
Mav leans in and plants a kiss on Ice's cheek, "I'm sorry I couldn't be better at not pissing off everyone, I probably made everything harder for you, thanks for putting up with my bullshit all these years."
Ice grabs Maverick's face and kisses him properly, "Pete Mitchell, you don't need to be sorry, we've both done our fair share of stupid shit, I married a woman that I didn't love to make sure I wouldn't get discharged for contact unbecoming of an officer, I think my fuck up was worse."
Then Pete's phone rings, he grabs it out of his pocket and checks it.
"From the look on your face that's probably important." Ice says.
"Yeah, sorry." Maverick replies.
"It's fine, go, the job's important."
"Don't do anything stupid till I get back." Maverick says, giving Ice one final kiss.
"How can I," Ice says, with a rye smile on his face, "You're taking all the stupid with you."
-several days later-
Pete is standing in front of the casket holding his wingman.
He's had silent tears pouring down his face since he arrived at the funeral.
Something feels unreal about the entire situation, it feels wrong, Ice can't be dead, he can't be. No, no, Maverick must be asleep he's going to wake up in a couple minutes and Ice is going to be alive, he's going to wake up to Ice's arms wrapped around his waist, Ice's slightly too rough to be normal breathing in his ear.
But Mav never wakes up, he's unclipping the wings from his dress blues and setting them on Tom's casket. He raises his fist and brings it down hard, hammering the final nail into the box that would hold his partner's body for the rest of time, just as he had Goose's.
Hours later after every one else has left, Maverick sits in front of Tom's gravestone.
"I thought you promised not to do anything stupid while I was gone" Pete cries. "You promised Iceman, dying is a pretty stupid thing to do."
Pete paused as if he expected a reply before bringing two fingers to his lips kissing them and pressing them to the cool marble of the headstone, "See you later Iceman, I love you."

I got really bored and made a top gun oc so I'm gonna make a post about him cuz I can
Name: James Murray
Call sign: Wishbone
Birth year: 1961
Age during the events of top gun: 25
Age during the events of top gun maverick: 61
Origin of call sign: James and some of the other students at the naval academy chose to stay at the academy during Thanksgiving break instead of going home, James said that they should go out for dinner on Thanksgiving all together, everyone agreed. They got an entire Turkey and James dared someone to ask the waiter for the wishbone so they could break it and see who'd have good luck, they started calling him wishbone after that and it stuck and became his call sign
Basic idea of what he looks like:
He's a rio, he was at top gun at the same time as Maverick and was friends with Goose and him
Song that describes him: Father by The Front Bottoms
If anyone wants to use him in their fanfiction or draw fanart of him they can, just please credit me for the original idea cuz I put quite a bit of work into him

Bilbo wasn't quite sure what he was doing; he just knew that he needed to get out of the shire. Ever since he came home from his “great adventure” about 15 years ago, the rest of the Hobbits had shunned him, except for when they wanted money. Bilbo though the money wasn't worth talking to someone you refused to the rest of the time, but he'd digress he knew very little of what it was like for most others anymore because just as they avoided him, he avoided them, it was easier that way.
That was up until about a week ago, when he heard that his cousins Drogo Baggins and Primula Brandybuck had drowned in a boating accident and his cousin Frodo had showed up on his doorstep.
“Frodo, my dear boy, what are you doing here, you don't usually visit without your parents.” Bilbo remarked.
Bilbo noticed that Frodo had tears streaming down his face, then Frodo told him the terrible news, “They're dead Bilbo, my parents are dead. They drowned in a boating accident. I was supposed to stay with my grandfather at Buckhallow, but I couldn't. Can I stay with you?”
Frodo paused for a second before answering. “ I suppose that would be alright, come inside and I'll make some tea, how does that sound?”
Frodo nodded and came inside.
Then the whispers started.
“Do you notice how similar Bilbo and Frodo look, are we sure that Bilbo isn't his father?”
“I wonder if Bilbo had a child on that adventure he went on and then he sent him to live in Buckland to hide it, because Frodo looks too much like him to only be his cousin I say.”
Bilbo ignored them for as long as he could, but then they got worse, they started accusing Primula of cheating on Drogo with Bilbo. That's when Bilbo had decided he'd had enough.

You guys should tell me what you think of this, it's not finished but I wanted to know what people think
I'm bored so here are some random top gun headcanons
~
Maverick has audhd
Goose carries an as he calls it, a grab and go first aid kit, that has everything from a tourniquet to pepper spray in it, this is one of the reasons he's called mother goose
Rooster projects his own worries and self doubt onto others through anger, especially Maverick because Maverick was the easiest scape goat when he was younger because of Goose's death
Maverick has convinced himself that he's stopped blaming himself for Goose's death even though he never truly will
Maverick is reckless because he thinks that's the only way he'll get noticed by anyone because after his mom died he was in and out of different foster families and he always felt like they never saw him unless he was doing something dangerous
When Maverick first got into the Navy he didn't know anyone there so he refused to talk to anyone unless necessary until he got roomed with Goose and Goose got him to come out of his shell because he refused to let anyone not have at least one friend
Goose had to help Maverick learn how to not mask to the point of self destruction because when he was younger he was always told he was too weird or strange so he hid what was different about him to please others
Maverick refuses to accept that he's sick until he's nearly passed out from overworking his body and Goose acts like he's dying when he gets a runny nose, same with Ice
Ice refuses to admit that he's wrong about anything, ever
Maverick's hubris sometimes gets in the way of him making smart decisions, which ultimately causes him and others to get hurt
Goose is super affectionate towards everyone, but especially people he's close to and it's almost gotten him dishonorably discharged because someone thought he was gay because he kissed Mav's cheek
~
Did I basically just project into Maverick a bit, maybe, but that's besides the point
