MS in Biology (EcoEvo) • 30F • I have no idea what I’m doing 90% of the time. Sometimes I draw things. Icon is from @link-is-a-dork. Blog title is from Vermillion Gym in Pokémon FRLG. (I rarely use desktop and I don’t remember what state I left my desktop appearance in. But it’s probably bad. Sorry.)

Fun surprise yesterday - this Downy Woodpecker has been visiting the Chickadee box lately (I am glad it is not wooden!), and last night at 7 decided to spend the night. He got up at 7 in the morning. It's been chilly, so he must have enjoyed the shelter. Downies have never nested in my boxes, so I am sure this is just temporary. The Chickadees are measuring the drapes!

hey it's probably a really good idea to download a copy of your Master Promissory Note since most of them stipulate that your loans are *specifically owed to the Department of Education* and if you intend to dispute the debt in the wake of the DoE dissolving that will be really good to have

log in and then go to My Documents and download a copy of it. i'm serious. if trump dissolves the DoE entirely it may make the debt uncollectable depending on exactly how they do it, and he's too stupid to listen to lawyers that tell him when he's breaking the law. worst case you have an extra PDF on your computer. best case your student loans go away because you signed a contract to pay DoE and no one else. go download a copy.

becoming president just to put lumen, decibel, and size restrictions on vehicles.

i shouldn't be seeing floaters shaped like your car's headlights for thirty seconds after i pass you. also shut the fuck up. and your car does not need to be that big. you're putting other people in danger. let's get you a more conscious-of-other-people car

In Prince's funky name, amen.

Millennial here. All the above and:

Please send me the training or tutorial in a written format with maybe some screenshots if necessary. I don't want a video tutorial. I don't want to waste time trying to scroll to the exact moment in the instructions that I need and then have to pause and replay it because I missed the .01 seconds of actually relevant information.

Please. Text. Maybe some images for clarification. I can read. I promise.

Skimmable, SEARCHABLE instructions. If they're long, there should be a hyperlinked table of contents.

And nothing that's paywalled for Christ's sake.

So one of my tweets kinda blew up. :v

This reminds me of the time that a Hungarian doctor called Ignaz Semmelweiss noticed that the bulk of patients in a maternity ward treated by doctors were dying horribly, while the ones treated by nurses were more likely to survive.

He figured out that this was because the doctors were dissecting corpses inbetween delivering babies, while the nurses weren’t, and came up with his controversial “hey, why don’t we all wash our filthy, filthy hands before sticking them in a woman?” theory.

The result, short term, was that the mortality rate on this one maternity ward decreased by a ridiculous amount. They went from “write your will before you come here, because you’re probably gonna die” to “we’re not 100% sure, but you’ll probably live”.

The result, long term, was that Semmelweiss was hated by absolutely everybody, lost his reputation and had his career suffer terribly.

His eventual reward was that eventually people finally started sashimg their hands with soap before operations, history remembers him as a misunderstood hero, and the instinctive angry and defensive reaction so many people give whenconfronted with new ideas that conflict with their established view of the world is now called ‘the Semmelweiss reflex’.

Because some people care more about themselves not being wrong than they do about things in general being right.

somehow instead of saying "as a treat", I've started using the phrase "for morale", as if my body is a ship and its crew, and I (the captain) have to keep us in high spirits, lest we suffer a mutiny in the coming days.

and so I will eat this small block of fancy cheese, for morale. I will take a break and drink some tea, for morale. I will pick up that weird bug, for morale.

I'm not sure if it helps, but it does entertain me

We often eat pie at work...for morale.

"As a treat" implies a special occasion, a temporary state. "For morale" makes the joy essential, because you have to have good morale to keep going.

From one Gen-Z to another, let’s continue to deprogram ourselves from the idea that 30 is old and you need to have your shit together before 30.

You can go back to school after age 30!

You can fall in love after age 30!

You can find a best friend after age 30!

You can find a passion after age 30!

You can find a job you love after age 30!

You can recover from an addiction after the age 30!

You can pursue a large goal after age 30!

You can travel the world after age 30!

You can move after age 30!

You can change your appearance after age 30!

You can ask for help after age 30!

You can make discoveries about yourself after age 30!

You can come out after age 30!

You can fix your finances after age 30!

You can be attractive after age 30!

You can fix your life after age 30!

You can do anything after age 30!

Idk what so specifically about the number 30 has bewitched so many of us into believing that means your life is over, but it’s just so far from the truth!

You have so much more time after 30 to accomplish all that you want to do.

Your life isn’t over until it quite literally is over. Stop giving yourself a deadline that doesn’t exist!

Since turning 30, I have changed careers, gotten married, sought out and received gender-affirming care, got help for depression, picked up new hobbies, made new friends, and moved across the country. You could not pay me to go back to my 20s.

I know you kids are going through hell right now. You are almost to the other side, so keep going!

For anyone wondering, Blockhead and conehead are terms used to describe the skull shape of golden retrievers. This baby is a blockhead but to anyone unfamiliar, it sounds like the reddit op is asking if this puppy is going to be an idiot.

Goldens have two main head types, Block and Cone (sometimes called slender but I digress). Blockheads have the big blocky heads and coneheads are more pointy. Two examples below.

As far as I'm aware, its just an aesthetic thing and has no impact on their health.

TLDR: your mama so blockhead she minecraft steve
