Antisemitism and orientalism have a lot of similar and overlapping tropes and anxieties (the threat of monopoly and financial capitalism as well as communism, untrustworthy businessmen, “hive minds” and conspiracies about world control, popular associations with education, medicine and finance, both assimilable but other, etc etc) and I guess Europeans repeatedly made this comparison explicitly themselves.

Hi. The paternal side of my family is Indonesian Chinese. These pogroms directly affected us. The story that nobody talks about unless someone gets drunk at a family gathering is that my grandparents hid my father and his siblings in a cart of rotten vegetables when they were kids, then smuggled them out of town in Central Java when this was happening. They hid in a shipping container for days waiting for this pogrom to pass.

When did this happen? The 1970s. Yes. Why? Because Indonesia bought into the red scare and claimed Chinese Indonesians were communists, because of our skin colour.

This is recent history that people in Indonesia dislike talking about. Racial prejudice still exists here, though maybe less overtly than it was. This sort of thing happened as recently as the 1970s. Not just the 1700s. Many Chinese Indonesians lost their lives in these riots. Many of the ones who survived were forced to change their family names to Indonesian ones to "assimilate", despite having settled in the archipelago decades, if not centuries ago.

Do not forget that this happened. Do not forget that this could happen to you. Do not let history repeat itself.
