For the Fall of Neil Hargrove, day 2 prompt; "The Camaro"

The car is an object; not living per se But sentient, maybe, perhaps, in a way She knows her boy’s touch from the many repairs Knows that he loves her, and knows that he cares

He fixes her ailments and fills her with gas Washes her paint job and polishes glass Until they sparkle, until they gleam Together, they make such a glorious team

He’s a good driver, she’s a good car Together, they’re great; they go fast, they go far She doesn’t know feelings like hate and thereof But loves him, as much as a car can feel love

Some nights, he is hurting inside her, she knows His driving is reckless and angry, it shows On some nights he screams, on others he weeps Sometimes, he curls up on the backseat and sleeps

One night, he is shoved to the driver’s side door And held there, and screamed at, then shoved to the floor Another man enters her, sits in the seat And backs her away from her boy, to the street

The man drives her off, he is angry and strong His grip is abrasive, he drives her all wrong She knows; this is he who has caused her boy’s pain She knows; she will not let him do it again

So she speeds up, though the man tries to brake She turns on her own, and she drives to the lake She knows these roads well, and she knows where she’s going He tries the handbrake, but she is not slowing

Right up ahead, there’s a turn in the road They’ll crash, and they’ll drown, and they’ll sink and corrode She speeds through the fence and then they’re in the air The man in her seat screams, but she doesn’t care

She’s crooked, she thinks, lying under the water in death, he’s parked badly, this man, her boy’s father her boy would have never, she thinks as she sits have set her on boulders, her chassis all tilted

Fish swim away as the man’s engine roars, fuelling his arms—he yanks hard at her doors, but his roaring gets softer—he stops, pounds her glass she remembers Rusty Girl saying ‘Kill his ass.’

The bad parker stops moving, and then starts to float against her ceiling and windshield, like he thinks he’s a boat. She hopes no one finds them, now his engine has guttered, and feeds him fresh fuel, brings him coughing and spluttering

Her boy will soon miss her, she thinks, and she uses the last of her will to coast forward, abuses her chrome and her mirrors, grating over the floor but her boy must not find her, mustn’t open her doors.

She waits to stop thinking, and then she just waits she’s tickled by fish, they mouth at her plates Her fluids float upwards, and so do the man’s, her upholstery’s staining, she thinks, like some stoner's van's.

Humans all look the same to her, all soft and blah colors except when they find her, they’re black like her leathers with headlights and tubes, are they humans or cars? She tries to roll further, she doesn’t get far

The man is not fueled, though, they wrap him in plastic they don’t bring the gas can, she wishes she could ask if he’s off to the wrecking yard, sold off for parts or can be repaired, if his engine still starts

her headlights still work, though humans switch them off, it helps her to watch him, to see if he coughs she could roll on over him, she thinks, where he lies crush his whole engine, make sure he dies

but her door clicks and swings open—it’s the Rust Girl her head still needs sanding and painting, a whirl of rusty metal that clouds down her back, --and the boy made of nice seat leather, polished and black.

She likes them, those two, nearly as much as her boy when they tow her to dry, let her drip, give her joy as they talk about Neil, that he’s dead, dead for real, that no fuel and no lubricant will let him heal.

Her boy is at home, Rust Girl wants to repair her, wash her seats, wax her paint, they must look a pair Rusty and dripping, but soon they’ll be shining And she and her boy, they’ll get back to DRIVING

Look what @platypanthewriter wrote for me! Art and glass flowers and a creative Steve growing up in a glass studio and a scantily clad glittery Billy there at the end of the chapter, and oh it painted such vivid images in my head!

I smiled all the way through it and now I want to create stuff in glass! So i spring and cute and lovely! Thank you so so much!

fiction and fantasy are so fun because it's like. if i met this man in real life i would drop kick him off a cliff within three seconds of him opening his mouth. luckily for him he doesn't exist so we can all happily ignore those red flags and pretend we could fix him

Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

(Non-authors, please RB to signal boost to your author friends!)

An astute reader informed me this morning that one of my fics (Children of the Future Age) had been pirated and was being sold as a novel on Amazon:

(And they weren't even creative with their cover design. If you're going to pirate something that I spent a full year of my life writing, at least give me a pretty screenshot to brag about later. Seriously.)

I promptly filed a DMCA complaint to have it removed, but I checked out the company that put it up -- Plush Books -- and it looks like A LOT of their books are pirated fic. They are by no means the only ones doing this, either -- the fact that """publishers""" can download stories from AO3 in ebook format and then reupload them to Amazon in just a few clicks makes fic piracy a common problem. There are a whole host of reasons why letting this continue is bad -- including actual legal risk to fanfiction archives -- but basically:

IF YOU ARE A FANFIC AUTHOR WITH LONG AND/OR POPULAR WORKS, PLEASE CHECK AMAZON TO SEE IF YOUR STORIES HAVE BEEN PIRATED.

You can search for your fics by title, or by text from the description (which is often just copied wholesale from AO3 as well). If you find that someone has stolen your work and is selling it as their own, you can lodge a DMCA complaint (Amazon.com/USA site; other countries have different systems). If you haven't done this before, it's easy! Here's a tutorial:

First, go to this form. You'll need to be signed into your Amazon account.

Please share this information with your writer friends, keep an eye out for/report pirated works, and help us keep fanfiction free and legally protected!

NOTE: All of the above also applies to Amazon products featuring stolen artwork, etc., so fan artists should check too!

UPDATE: Plush Books still exists on Amazon and on Goodreads under the pseudonym "J.D. Geraghty" where the fanfics are also listed. They also have a list of cookbooks that are without a doubt AI written (the descriptions for the books are repetitive nonsense so god forbid what exists inside).

From what I can see on Amazon, most of the stolen fanfics have become "Unavailable." This entity likely operates under more than one name, so it isn't safe to assume crisis averted. Numerous bad actors are posting AI written works to Amazon, which just means plagiarism slurry with a side of potential danger (like the autogenerated mushroom identification books).
