I imagine there are a lot of people pretty disappointed about the Mon3tr thing but I am going to be a little honest, it wasn't exactly that hard to figure out. The biggest hint was definitely in YOU HAVE TO KEEP GOING which is EN Twitter content so I definitely understood if that was missed by a lot of people. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if most people didn't even know these things existed.
But there were definitely some other hints here and there, a lot of relating to Kal'tsit's immortality deal:
- Mon3tr is definitely show to be not only sentient, but capable of making decisions. The first instance of this is actually Heart of Surging Flame, where Mon3tr takes from conversational cues than A.U.S. are Seaborn when that wasn't actually true, but it's most notable in A Walk in the Dust.
- Nezzsalem notes that Kal'tsit didn't always take the form she has: that the last time he saw her she looked radically different.
- This one is a little more YMMV, but Kal'tsit during the Kazdelian Crusade looks subtly different from how Kal'tsit looks in her chibi form.
- Speaking of, we know that it's during the Kazdelian Crusade where Kal'tsit dies at the hands of Theresis, and she doesn't have Mon3tr during that time, only Mon2tr.
- We know that while Kal'tsit retains the memories of her reincarnations, she seems to regard them as somewhat separate individuals. Different iterations of herself may be the most appropriate term. She doesn't seem to regard herself as a contiguous being.
- Kal'tsit reincarnations, as well as Mon3tr, have received only marginal story attention. We don't have an understanding of how Kal mechanically even works.
- Kal'tsit is not even the only immortal catperson in the setting (thanks Nowell!), so there must be something unique as the catalyst.
This lead to me, at least several months back, hypothesizing that Mon3tr was some kind of larval Kal'tsit form. That it would not be incorrect to say that Kal'tsit and Mon3tr aren't two separate beings.
and then YOU HAVE TO KEEP GOING dropped and basically confirmed a lot of my suspicions.
*deeeeeeeeep inhale* yeah. Yeah.
Then there is Endfield. As of the last Cock and Ball Torture, I believe, we've known that the name of the Kal'tsit lookalike is M3.
and I mean. Yeah.
They also got into the texture files for M3 and found that the file name is mon3tr, which I personally wonder if it was an intentional Easter egg. It's impossible to know really, but the CN side of operations has like entire ARGs so I'm not pushing past it.
I personally can't wait for Chapter 15 to come out.
Also W calls Mon3tr Kal'tsit Jr. I don't believe she knew but its REALLY fucking funny now.
