i really wish fandoms would understand the difference between a character and what a writer decided to do with them in a storyline. its very frustrating how often discussions around x-men characters devolve into moral purity tests based on the worst thing a writer has made then do. nightcrawler, for example, gets written off as evil because "he's killed people", as though that alone defines him. not everyone follows xavier's pacifism and they aren't bad for that. kurt himself once said, "it is god's job to judge you, but i'm happy to make the arrangement."
this goes beyond kurt tho. every major x-men character has been dragged through some deeply questionable writing. magneto is constantly flattened as a groomer. charles gets reduced to a manipulative abuser (even in the movies!), rogue is labeled as an awful cheater. jean, logan, scott- all of them have had arcs that feel wildly out of step with their core character, written by people who clearly don't understand them, or were just saving a larger editorial agenda.
we need to stop treating the most out-of-character moments as the definitive truth about someone. these are *fictional characters*, shadowed by decades of inconsistent, ever-changing story telling, retcons, alternative universes, etc (captain america was literally a supporter of hydra for a second????).
tldr: its okay to appreciate characters for the idea of them, what they represent, what they could be, and what they usually are. not just the worst parts of them that ever made it to print or film. you are allowed to engage with characters selectively, especially with something as inconsistent as marvel.
you have free will. enjoy the idea of characters! be critical! be creative! do whatever you want!!!

Charles did not go through what it feels like to have your brain ripped in half to protect the man he loved and then get paralyzed and abandoned for Raven to say in Dark Phoenix that he has not sacrificed anything.
