I donโt think USians realize how big is everything that have been happening since Trump took power for how the world other is defined. I think, for real, this is the end of the โAmerican centuryโ. I donโt think thereโs a way to turn back to pre January-2025.
Mind you, itโs not even about Trump. He and Vance and half of the republican party could die tomorrow and little would change.
The root of the problem is not even Trump on his own, but what he had plain to see: the US system is flaky and untrustworthy. Even if he step down tomorrow, I donโt think anyone could see the US again without a new, modern constitution and a deep societal change.
You see, the shit Trump and Musk are pulling is something there some people in every country of the world like to do locally. But I donโt think there is a single democracy where whatโs going on in the US could happen.
The kind of three branches capture that Trump has managed would be very hard to achieve in any modern democracy that have gone past a two-party system. In almost every country in the world there is also a figure (a president of the republic, a queen) that could bring down the executive branch if they decide to not comply with a judge mandates.
And whatโs more, even if they managed to fully capture all the branches, society wouldnโt accept the kind of changes Trump has been doing. Sure, those can still happen, but it would be a long, long work, with lots of brinkmanship and small steps (see Erdogan or Orban, or even Putin).
If, letโs say, Le Pen gets elected in France and she tried to do even a fraction of what Trump has done in the last two months, Paris will be in flames. Literally. There would be blood in the street. If they do something like that in Spain, the MPs would need to enter the Congress by helicopter because if would be besieged by demonstrators. There would be violent crashes with the police every day. There would be general strikes, massive demonstrations in the streets. The opposition parties would made the parliament a zone of war.
Look at how Argentinians have reacted to Milei doing just a diet version of what Musk is doing. Look at what happened with Liz Truss. No politician in their right mind could think of doing that they are doing in the states, and if they did it, the chances are they wouldnโt last long.
The fact that this can even happen is almost as terrifying than whatโs been done. And I donโt think the US can walk back from that on the international stage.
