Its Bennie and the jets not Bennie and the hets 💁‍♀️

i'm jewish and two of my closest friends are a muslim woman and a christian woman, and today we decided that this weekend would be a more opportune time of year than the month of december to say "happy holidays" since it's good friday and easter sunday, passover, and ramadan all happening on one weekend, rather than like. hanukkah, christmas, kwanzaa, new year's, etc. happening roughly over the course of 4-6 weeks. so. happy holidays to anyone celebrating this weekend :)

my coworker today was like “i bet you dont know this song” and put on Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. And I was like “yeah, of course I do, it’s Elton John” and he was like “who?” and I said “Elton John. He wrote this” and he was like “oh I don’t know about that, it’s just in the Chicken Little movie”

No one I know has had the same experience as me getting on hrt and honestly it's a damn shame

me, mentally bracing myself for months, if not years of psychological evaluation: "So I think I might be trans?"

doc: "cool cool cool cool"

doc: "so... do you wanna start estrogen today or...?"

This is the blessed post of ungatekeeping. Reblog this to never again have to barter with a medical professional regarding treatment of your mental or physical health.

if you are in the united states, this is a map of every us clinic which practices the informed-consent model of hrt; as you can see, there’s a fair amount, although great plains/basin and range/deep south coverage is lacking. i went to the san diego family health center after discovering that the in-house process covered by my insurance would take a long enough time and involve enough gatekeeping (especially considering my personal approach to gender and transition) that there was no chance of my getting on testosterone through them before i left the country, and the fhc not only got me fully processed and on hrt within a month but gave me an 80% discount. this is to say that even if your insurance doesn’t cover your nearest informed-consent clinic, or you haven’t got insurance, it’s still worth investigating.

landlords arent bad because theyre “lazy” or “parasites”, theyre bad because they take advantage of poverty and manipulate housing availability for financial gain. you people have GOT to stop framing your critiques of the bourgeoise the same way eugenicists talk about the disabled

I was going to sneakily reply to this with “but they’re also parasites” but

I did some introspection and you’re right. While landlords do suck up value without giving any back, the idea that every individual needs to “contribute something” to capital is an inherently manufactured take.

What should be criticized is the coercive nature of the transaction between rentiers and their tenants; the artificial scarcity employed to maintain the power imbalance between the landed and those without; an ideal world is not one where we retributively attack the gentry but find a way to make them irrelevant.

Framing landlords as “they’re bad bc they’re lazy parasites” actually opens you up to further attacks! Several are in fact not lazy, they sometimes do stuff like act as professional middlepeople (“something is broken, it is their job to find someone else who will fix it”). And so they might say “actually, managing property is quite a bit of work therefore landlords aren’t all useless, just the bad ones, therefore we deserve to exist, ha!”

But that’s not the point! The point is that they manipulate a massively necessary need (housing) for their own gain, raising prices while threatening people with homelessness! That’s what’s bad, not the fact that they’re “lazy”. You could have the most hardworking landlord in the world, and it would still contribute to harm.

the elephant in the room when it comes to the "we must protect our children" objections by conservative politicians is that they are not referring to living, breathing children, but a platonic concept of "a child" that children are coerced into emulating through abuse kneaded by both the state and their parents. The lack of rights children possess is to render them unable to object to what adults claim to do for their own good, which oftentimes are merely just means to maintain them as property than help them as people. The idea that teaching 6th graders very basic, very clinical sex ed is child abuse stems from the fear that their parents lose some control over their child's autonomy by having the child know things (which, statically, also makes them more likely to tell someone when they are being abused by an adult. Interesting) that the parent has not sanctioned as a part of their person. Conservatives accuse everyone else of child abuse not because they care that a child is being hurt, but because hurting children is only their god given right.

it’s jokes on here but rly truly genuinely the thing u like abt taika’s core affect has always been his māori-ness. what ur perceiving in his comedy and writing and emotional beats and exploration of masculinity and general clown shit is peak pasifika. not that islanders have the monopoly on his tone but. since 2 cars 1 night, eagle vs shark, flight of the conchords, boy, hunt for the wilderpeople, what we do in the shadows, our flag means death etc. he has never not been a māori eccentric making distinctly happy-sad dramedies born out of māori boyhood and the cadence of nz aoteoroa village kid humor like. that is an islander doing bits at ur aunty’s funeral if i ever saw one

anyway just ensuring the masses. that’s not western hollywood progressive ally it-boy sauce. u know what i mean. like the reason it’s refreshing is bc pasifika masculine tenderness exists outside of That. māori boys traditionally wear skirts and weave and wear flowers in their hair and collectively weep at funerals and kiss the body in the casket and tell self deprecating jokes when grandma is bummed out and learn to carry grief very. absurdly, comedically, softly, openly. grief both personal and historical. colonized islanders navigating the fracturing of our communities via jokes etc. it’s everything that white masculinity is not. so!!! idk there are and will continue to be a trillion essays on taika’s sauce bc he gets written fat checks and has like 7 massive projects out at any given time but the conversation would hugely benefit from not leaving out his. entire artistic ethos as an islander

so the academy is reviewing whether or not to remove Will Smith’s award and here are some interesting tweets about that :)

also since april fools is coming up tomorrow, just wanna say that this blog is a safe place that will have no jumpscares/flashing lights/derealization stuff! /gen

rb if u wanna let others know your blog will be safe too :]

hey irish diaspora lets celebrate saint patrick’s day by making a donation to the choctaw nation, and for those who are settlers, by paying reparations to the people upon whose colonized lands we live and by learning how to become accomplices to causes of indigenous sovereignty and the return of stolen lands to those who belong to it

For context, the Choctaw nation sent money to Ireland during the great famine in the 1800s, at a time when the Choctaw were also suffering from colonialism themselves

The word “religion” does not mean “Christianity.”

The word “faith” does not mean “Christianity.”

The word “spirituality” does not mean “Christianity.”

You have got to stop equating all of these things. You have got to stop doing shit like saying “all religion is bad” or “all faith is destructive.”

You have got to understand that you can’t truly support Jewish people and Indigenous people and immigrants and refugees and marginalized communities if you’re looking down your nose at their cultures.

There are more religions than Christianity.

Fucking bizarre watching people try to eject Russians from whiteness in real time

This is what colonized people have always been saying. Whiteness is an ontological category created to justify which part of the power hierarchy you are allowed to occupy in the sphere of western imperialist domination. It defines the proximity to the colonial halls of power. It has always been fluid until recently and it will remain fluid to resist as the power restructures.

Ukrainians are included doesn’t mean they matter. They are useful pawns for now geopolitically and bodies of labour to exploit. So they stay higher in the hierarchy for now.

The orientalizing of Russia also shows the extent to which “Europe” and “Asia” are ideological/discursive categories and not actual geographical boundaries (because if we’re being honest Europe is a large peninsula in northwest Asia). The boundary between “Europe” and “Asia” is constantly in flux and dependent on the geopolitical conditions of the day. Another example of this is the insistence by media and journalists this is the “largest conflict in Europe since WW2”, effectively brainholing the wars in former Yugoslavia because it’s no longer geopolitically useful to categorize the Balkans as “Europe.”

saw a stupid post on my dash and now i feel like swinging a bat at a hornets nest

when people say transandrophobia doesn't exist they aren't saying trans men don't face specific experiences of transphobia, they're saying that there is not a form of combined oppression that occurs at the intersection of being trans and being a man, because being a man is not a trait people are oppressed for. there is no systemic androphobia or misandry in the first place, so it cannot be compounded upon with the addition of being trans. all bigotry trans men are subjected to because of their gender is the result of transphobia.

in contrast, transmisogyny is more than just "transphobia aimed at trans women". the term exists to describe the way that in addition to transphobia (which affects all trans people) and misogyny (which affects all women), trans women are subjected to a unique oppression that is greater than the sum of its parts where those two forms of bigotry meet. to use the term transandrophobia when you ARE talking about "transphobia aimed at trans men", you're just displaying your lack of understanding about why the phrase transmisogyny exists at all.

yes, the transphobia aimed at trans men often looks different from transphobia aimed at trans women. yes, transmascs deserve to be able to discuss the specific ways they experience transphobia. but it's still important to be cognizant of the implications behind the words you use to describe it. "transandrophobia" inherently implies the existence of unadulterated androphobia affecting all men. to dismiss that fact by saying it's Just Semantics is to say you don't actually care about the term that transandrophobia came from and it displays a willful apathy towards the true meaning of transmisogyny.

My name is Oscar Isaac, but my full name is Óscar Isaac Hernández Estrada. I said to Hollywood, you can pick two of these names. Guess what they went with, the white ones.

the funny thing about mitski's fans losing their shit when she says she doesn't want people recording her whole shows is that plenty of musicians ask this of their audiences and no one throws a fit like mitski fans. when i went and saw the mountain goats john darnielle asked everyone to just put their phones away for a good part of the show because it made him feel put on the spot and literally everyone (with the exception of 1 person who stopped when he called them out publicly) followed directions. a family friend went to a prince concert like a year or so before prince passed away and he told the audience to put their phones away and be in the moment and even though he's playing to a massive fucking stadium because he's PRINCE everybody still did it. it is literally just an aggravating entitled tiktok user thing to make a massive deal of it

this is a great post OP, and i was going to put this in the tags but fuck it i dont think its talked about enough. i think mitski fans are specifically disrespectful to her in the way they are because she’s an asian woman. the overreaction to this very reasonable request is treating her as if she is asking too much because asian women are not supposed to ask anything of you. they’re supposed to just let themselves be consumed for your entertainment. the history of the asian female figure specifically in the western consciousness is of an oversexualized (people making the “mommy? sorry. mommy?” joke to her face) pleasure figure with little to no agency who volunteers to be used by the consumer. and that ends up just being a subconscious bias a lot of people have because media representation really does affect our perspectives in a society so oversaturated with media consumption. so when mitski, an asian american woman, makes a (very polite and reasonable) request from her audience, who she sees as a community to share her music with and reciprocally create an experience together with, she is talking to a group of fans who in large part have come to see her as a product, moreso than people come to see other musicians who aren’t asian women. people feel particularly entitled to consuming mitski like a product because she is an asian woman.

Thi s reblog is 100% correct. People don’t like to admit it, but in the West as a whole (speaking bc I’m not American) Asian women are subtly constructed as servants to whiteness, who are not to have opinions or voices. Most of the pushback to this is because of that racism, not just because of entitled ppl on tik tok. To act like the overall kinda gross appropriation and mistreatment of Mitski and her music is a) entirely dissociated from her race and b) confined to tik tok only isn’t just incorrect, it’s a great way for white ppl to give themselves a pat on the back for “not being part of the problem” without evaluating their own potentially flawed relationship w Mitski and her music.

i hate these posts about how mitski is not being respected as an artist and “people don’t respect art and artists” which is true, they don’t, but these posts NEVER touch on the fact shes a woman of color with a fanbase made up largely of white women. are we seriously pretending that has no significance at all when her fans disregard and violate her feelings and opinions, oversimplify her music as “sad girl female manipulator music”, and their choice to consume her as a product rather than seeing her as an artist whos work they respect??
