Crowley possessing a rat is fun cause it opens possibilities like... When Sam stays behind while John and Dean are on a hunt, there's a stray cat or dog that he takes care of. It follows him around and at some point he even lets it into the motel room/house he's staying in. He lets it sleep on the foot of his bed. It's easy to talk to the animal so he just starts telling it stories about himself and his family, his worries, his plans for the future, his feelings and everything else. Azazel and his demons don't even have to try to get close to Sam through school nurses or counselors anymore. No need to try and convince him to talk to them, no complicated ways to try and get close to him. Sam lets them in without a second thought, tells them everything they need to know without even having to ask. Easy to make him follow them around, to wherever they need him to go. And he doesn't even know, has no reason to suspect anything, because demons possess humans. Its just an animal thats as lonely as he is
