The Babbling Hamster

I think I'm slowly but surely turning into a Sanrio girl.

There are plenty of valid reasons to choose to not have children, but the anti-natalists have clung to this idea that you shouldn’t have children because it’s hard. They spout, “Parents are always complaining about how hard it is to/how tired they are!!” as if that’s some sort of gotcha. But like, why do anything rewarding in life if temporary difficulty and unpleasantness happen? Why create art? Why go to therapy? Why write? Why learn an instrument, or a new language? Why take up a new sport, or start working out? Why pursue an advanced degree, or a difficult career? Why adopt a rescue animal? Why make amends in relationships? If your whole reason to not do something is because there is transient unpleasantness involved, then just do nothing. Sit in your apartment and rot away. Everything in life that is truly rewarding is, in some degree, challenging.

I think it's important to remember that just because you find someone basic or boring or whatever, you're actually very wrong and they are a unique and layered person with their own complicated life, emotions and interests. They don't have to perform anything to show you how interesting or special they are.

That straight white girl with her stanly cup and sephora makeup doesn't have to show you what makes her 'unique'. The older gentleman who shares conspiracy theories on facebook and mows his lawn early in the morning doesn't have to prove he isn't an 'npc' to you. The woman with the 'Karen' haircut and her son who watches stupid youtube videos don't have to drop everything to demonstrate to you that they can break the stereotypes you've associated with them.

Every person is a real person. Even if you never see them do a thing other than what you expect them to do, they are just as deep and emotional as you are because they are ALIVE! They're real! And they don't owe you a tour into their lives just to prove to you that they have thoughts and feelings! Just because you lack the empathy or understanding to see that someone who doesn't share your same lifestyle, hobbies or stereotypes might actually have a rich and detailed life, doesn't mean you're right.

This also applies to:

  • The young activist who doesn't research what they stand for and just goes to protests because they like protesting.
  • The fan who makes a piece of media their entire personality
  • The person who doesn't watch TV, eat processed foods, go to parties, play video games or do anything you find fun.
  • Your highschool bullies
  • The person who thinks reading is boring
  • People who neglect their pets but swear they love them.
  • The driver going 30 miles per hour in a 70
  • The person too stupid to answer a simple logic puzzle
  • The person who is always cheerful and seems to have no problems in their life
  • People who do whatever an authority tells them
  • Your coworkers
  • That person you saw walking down the street
  • The cashier who can't count back change to save their life
  • That customer who asks you to 'check in the back'
  • The person who comments 'first' on every youtube video
  • That kid who won't shut up
  • Babies
  • People who don't agree with your politics, but cannot intelligently argue against any of your points
  • The nurse doing dances on tik tok
  • The instagram clout chaser desperately looking for more attention

I'm not telling you to like anyone. Or even respect them. That's your bridge to cross. But if you find yourself thinking that any of these people are bland, useless, nothing, fake or- again- 'NPC's, you desperately need to train yourself out of the habit. You may just say it as a joke or whatever, but any form of dehumanization or categorizing another person as lesser than you is dangerous and arrogant. Everyone thinks. Everyone feels. Everyone is alive. Please remember that.
