A patron came in to the library a few weeks ago looking for a copy of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit". She said she wanted to replicate Peter's coat for her daughter's rabbit. Library staff found her the book thinking she meant a stuffed rabbit. But, lo and behold, it was a real rabbit! Introducing... Melvin Rabbit!

the thing is, right, that that short story I got published has sex in it. and sex is a pretty focal part of the story and themes, I’m making no bones about that. but it’s like…I wrote it thinking this is erotic but it’s not insanely spicy, it’s fairly standard mlw stuff and it’s not always that explicit, readers will have to use their imagination, and hell, there isn’t even any bondage or third parties or even one mythological creature knocking around here, turns out I’m still at heart a pretty vanilla girl at heart…
and then a friend who I showed it to went ‘oh wow that was a bit something!!’
and I had to recalibrate and think ‘ohhhhh yeah. most people aren’t on the pro-kink monster-fucker website.’
God, mood. I wrote the first line of Yield Under Great Persuasion ("Tam Becket hated Lord Lyford. On the other hand, gods, that man had a cock on him.") without a second thought. I did not think that was a big deal, i would not bat an eye if I opened a book and read that. I wrote it with the vibe of, "Here are some interesting facts about these guys. :)"
But uhhhhhh apparently my experiences are not universal. because. as u say. most people aren't on the pro-kink monsterfucker website. Most people do not expect to hear in detail about the love interest's fat girthy dick on page one. Most people apparently find that surprising and too sexy to encounter right up front with no lead-up whatsoever. evidently. Actually even people on the pro-kink monsterfucker website blush about it so my experiences are even less universal lmaooooo
so..... now we know that.

Battlestar Galactica is, for the most part, the exploration of humanity at its ugliest. The worlds end, billions of people are murdered, and it all goes downhill from there. The colonists, after the destruction of their homeworlds, are essentially like rabbits on the run. They scramble to preserve a society and infrastructure that no longer exists. But structure is function, and function is structure. If the structure no longer serves its function, can it exist?
Can democracy exist–or rather, a democratic republic, exist–after an apocalypse? Can a society that is forced to rely on a solitary military and political power be truly democratic? If the infrastructure that supported democracy is gone, then what? What does this mean? Is it truly a democracy vs non-democracy, good vs evil dichotomy? What are the implications of tossing away democracy as “good” and making sacrifices of liberty for actual, bare-bones survival?
Or this is something that reflects upon the people in charge, and their choices? Is the breakdown of democracy inevitable, or is it the selectorate or make it possible? Does the electorate have a say in this? Is it better to do what is ‘smart’ or is it better to do what is 'right’? And who gets to decide what is smart and what is right and which to choose and why these two things cannot coincide?
After all, it wasn’t the 50,000 best of humanity who survived (Gaius Baltar, ladies and gentlemen.) It was 50,000 of the best and the worst and every shade of grey in between.
