Ev, also @regular_gnome on twitter asks might take a moment due to uni, but they’re there. Sometimes they stay longer when I want to give a longer answer, but I’m time-limited

Collection Incomplete

Hi everyone! I'm making a comic on how the conflict between Titans and Archivists played out. At least my take on it. It's already written, and I'll be posting pages and linking them with chronological order here, aaand also including some earlier drawings related to the events. So, stay tuned:)

all other things related to them are also in tag #toh archivists

thanks to the amazing @luzura0809 spanish translation linked next to pages:)

Toh couch series guide, there are next hyperlink on them first || last

Collection Incomplete main

Have the Archivist ever,, tried to study the circumstances around how a Collector forms or are they uninterested in there own nature? (Do Collectors form at random, did the "birthrate" change after the extinction event, can a Collector be purposefully spawned,, can they only appear around others of their kind or could the fabric just pop up in the middle of space?)

They do know the circumstances of their own creation, on most part. Collectors come into existence when the magic released by a kilonova gains consciousness

Magic is unstable without something to contain it and give it directions. When a larger amount of pure magic is left unused for too long, it forms a kind of awareness to stabilise. This is how Starchildren come into being. A kilonova just produces the amount of magic that forms a collector

Starchildren form from different-sized "pockets" of magic. The smaller the pockets create smaller starchildren that tend to gravitate to other energy and stimuli, be around life, around noise. These little ones tend to stick together in groups and don’t really understand much. The bigger pockets of magic create larger, offften more solitary starchildren with a deeper awareness. They even hold bits of memory from before they became what they are.

Since magic works like energy it has always existed in some form, it was once part of a single, massive "pocket"- an entity called Everything. This being held all the energy there was. But it wanted more than stillness. It wanted things to exist.. So it exploded. In a way, it died, but because energy can’t be created or destroyed, it changed forms, scattered. But when enough magic gathers in one place, a piece of Everything echos

The archivists are somewhere in between. They’re closer to the smaller starchildren in nature, but they’ve got enough awareness to feel a pull, to keep things in motion, to help life continue. They don’t know why they feel this way. It’s just a quiet drive, probably the closest thing to instinct they have

The whole process is generally random, but it’s not hard to spot when it might happen, like when neutron stars are heading toward collision. The starchildren don’t try to force it. They work on a timescale where rushing makes no sense. Adding kinetic energy could throw off the outcome. So they wait. And in the face of infinity, what’s an eon?

While looking for a file, I found an old comic. I wasn’t initially going to post it, since their relationship becomes much more antagonistic after the Collector grows up and really returns to the Archive, that's just one of more down moments

But still, it exists

Gnome colony in attic seems to have dissolved into full-blown civil war. The giggles that used to keep me awake at night now replaced by sounds of acorns hitting fragile gnome bodies and quieter, more morose giggles.

I am the good vibes anon. Here to send you good vibes ✨️✨️✨️✨️

Are you making the Archivist merge into a grotesque mass?? 😭

They are too much of own person for that. I'd call it stretching their matter like a sore muscule

this ask was related to this post, Im so sorry this took so long. I realised something I was gonna say did not make sense in implications so it went back into drafts

What's Anatomist up to lately? (I miss my bae)

They are mainly working, occasionally getting annoyed at how evolution makes things more difficult for them to work on

it's reference to the recurrent laryngeal nerve. The fun thing about it is that it's the nerve that innervates the muscles in the larynx, but it detours around the aorta on its way from the brain to the voice box. This is especially noticeable in larger animals where the heart and the voice box are far apart. For example, in giraffes, the structures are only a few centimeters apart, but the nerve can get 5 meters long because it travels all the way down to the chest and then loops back up. This is a result of how structures evolved from fish (with no necks) to large animals (with large necks). Evolution can't just "unplug" the nerve and optimize it, so next best thing is to gradually adjust over time
