big fan of the japanese covers for tove’s adult fiction

Found the origin of that second cover! From Garm the People’s Watchdog:

Regardless of whether or not it was wartime, the openness of the summer seaside provided a staple joke. A similar situation can be found in the completely different image of two women bantering. The scene is set at the seaside during the middle of the summer of August 1944. A woman (smoking a cigarette) is complaining angrily that a certain woman is spreading a pack of lies about her. Her friend (with black hair) replies to her in a cool manner, “That’s fine, at least it’s not true”, implying that if that woman had been spreading the truth instead of lies, it would have been more troublesome for her friend. The woman smoking the cigarette appears to be a fun-loving individual and we may assume that she had most probably made a pass at the boyfriend of “the woman spreading a pack of lies.”

Happy Sapphic Visibility Day, everyone.

If you don't know Tove Jansson's "Who Will Comfort Toffle?" children's book, which is a wonderful sapphic tale, here is an English dub from a Japanese release of the 1979 short film.

And here is the original in Swedish with English translated subtitles.

Here is the Finnish version of the same movie above. No translation or same-language subtitles (aka closed captions). The uploader replaced the audio from the DVD with the audio from the VHS because re-release has a copyright issue regarding the film's soundtracks.

POV: your Finnish Swede grandmother reading a bedtime story.

Sorry, no transcript. I don't speak Swedish. And I don't know if I am legally allowed to with the copyright laws and everything.

Anyway, I am going to get that conch shell illustration tattooed on me someday. I was the world's most oblivious egg when an ex kept dropping heavy hints everywhere suggesting I might be trans.

(Toffle was supposed to be a girl in the original draft of the story, but then got regendered into a boy for publication. Combine that with the obvious lesbian motif of a conch shell. Make of that as you will.)

Excited about the new Streetlight Manifesto album.

Oh my god, SLM hasn't released an album since 2013. Holy shit. So excited.

Video transcript: Brock Lewis on the couch speaking "You know how in the Bible it says when the second coming of Jesus happens, you're gonna year trumpets. What if it just turned out Jesus was in a ska band?" Cuts to Jesus skanking.

Not sure if it's a good thing SLM broke 12 years of no release in middle of a global meltdown. Hmmm.

PMMP and Kent had a reunion last year. Streetlight Manifesto and The Birthday Massacre are dropping new albums this year. Holy shit.

Too bad I wasn't able to come up with the money for plane tickets when I got the tickets for PMMP in Helsinki and Kent in Stockholm for bestie.

Recent FAQ for Aces Wild

“Who are all these characters based on?”

Aces Wild isn’t a 1:1 translation of reality into a comic. While some of them are based on people I know and experiences I’ve had they are basically just placeholders. I didn’t even mean to name them, but so far some of them have ended up with names. Most of them are relegated to an idea or are an amalgamation of multiple people

Who else would rather have a pet than a child? What kind of pet?

Read on: TAPAS | WEBTOON | TUMBLR

Image description: A five panel comic from "Aces Wild" by Sally Vinter entitled "Baby Fever" published in 2022. First panel has two women in a conversation. The first woman said "You'll change your mind about wanting kids once you figure out a way to pay for them." The second woman looks uncomfortable. In the second panel, the unsolicited advice continues "It's the most fulfilling thing you can do as a woman. The joy of being a parent is second to nothing in the world. You'll regret it when you're older, otherwise." Sia looks annoyed trying to push the speech bubble away. In the third panel, Sia quips "You're right!" In the fourth panel, she sarcastically continues "I can feel my internal clock ticking. My heart need A- A-" with hearts around her body. In the last panel Sia presses against the glass looing at cats "Fur-Baby!" The sign on the window says "Adopt me!" The first lady is seen holding her shoulders.

Have you ever wanted a Printed Copy of Aces Wild? Wellll, I’ve been working with an independent publisher in Russia to release a translated version of Aces Wild in Print via a crowdfunding campaign!  This is the first time Aces Wild will be released in Print, so if you can read the language and want a copy, you can find it at the link above!

I’ve worked with Queer Russian activists in the past, and their struggles under Kremlin rule can be truly harrowing. This project is made possible due to a kind of loophole in the law. Queer media is illegal, but the law doesn’t recognize Asexuality as real, so it’s (hopefully) possible to fly under the radar and get some localized queer literature into circulation.

You can also feel free to support if you wanna stick it to P*tin.

Image description: Four panels comic from "Aces Wild" entitled "Cynical" by Sally Vinter published in 2018. Sia and Demi are at a table. Demi is on the phone while Sia enjoying a beverage with a straw. In the first panel, Demi is on the phone says "X caught cheating on Y. Man... Why do people even get married if they're going to seek fulfillment elsewhere?" Sia replies "I mean, why do people get married at all?" In the second panel, Demi puts down their (unknown pronoun) phone and inquiries "Companionship? Starting a family? Sex?" Sia continues "Emotional support? Religious reasons? Status?" In the third panel, they take a pause. In the final panel, they both shouts at each others at the same time "HYPOTHETICAL FIANCIAL STABILITY!"
