Tagging (no pressure, though!) @wurzelbertzwerg, @charminglygrouped, @storytilly, @sansigma and anyone else who'd like to play.
Mr Bennet has a close relationship with Elizabeth and provides amusing observations on the folly of human nature BUT he is a terrible husband and father who consistently neglects the women who rely on him for absolutely everything; Elizabeth and Jane turned out so well in spite of him, not because of him.
Mrs Bennet's behaviour is understandable given the era in which she lived and the subsequent pressure she was under to get her daughters married well, which wasn't entirely for vanity reasons given that Longbourn was entailed BUT she was still fundamentally vain, ridiculous and rude; such pressure, even combined with an absent husband, still does not make her behaviour justifiable, nor her a sympathetic character, as she enabled Lydia (whose subsequent elopement with Wickham almost ruined the family) for far too long.
Mr Collins is unfairly portrayed as a middle-aged sycophant in most adaptations, rather than the young clergyman who sucks up to his patroness in pursuit of a more lucrative living that he was BUT he is still a ridiculous character who you are not meant to feel sympathy for when Elizabeth rejects him; he is rude, hypocritical and thinks of himself far too highly considering how vapid he actually is.
Caroline Bingley is often too harshly judged as a 'pick-me,' even though her relentless pursuit of Darcy is understandable given his wealth & status and how important it was for women to make a good marriage BUT she was still rude, vain and treated Jane terribly; plus she was a hypocritical snob, given the manner in which she looked down upon the Bennet family's relations despite the Bingleys' own background in trade.
Elizabeth is incredibly witty, courageous and endearing and instantly likeable which makes Darcy's slight of her at the Meryton assembly all the more of an affront to us as readers BUT, while it explains her dislike of him, she is no means perfect herself; she had far too much misplaced pride in her ability to successfully read others' characters and consequently ignored positive accounts of Darcy in favour of believing the deceitful Wickham, given her prejudice against the former.
Mr Darcy was harshly judged by Elizabeth, even though there are many more sympathetic elements to his character than immediately meet the eye BUT he was not shy or innocent; he was always a haughty rich man who had never been told no, thought far too highly of himself and, ultimately, thoroughly deserved to be rebuked and subsequently made to reform his character.
Your story is 50% reader. It’s that mixture of reader and writer that makes the magic.
Which means your story needs to have holes for the reader to fill in. You need that negative space for the puzzle pieces to fit.
I’m not talking about plot holes, I’m talking about giving one sentence the power of two. A book that means what it says is a mediocre book. A book that means more than what it says is a great book.
Don’t over-develop your characters, having them analyze every feeling, or spelling out what every character in a scene is thinking. Don’t follow up a powerful line with an explanation with what makes that line powerful.
Let your words imply as much as they state.

concept (I say this lovingly / the call is coming from inside the house): P&P fanfic BINGO
I've heard they just got a barouche-landau
Modern day John Thorpe starts talking about how AI can do all that now when Catherine asks him if he reads novels
Please do give us numbers 6 and 7 for the fic rec game! :D (P&P fandom)
♥️♥️♥️ thank you for asking these ♥️♥️♥️
6 A fic that kept me on the edge of my seat
OHHHH. Any of @linmeiwei ’s really, but Mr Darcy and the Murder at Rosings checked alllll of my boxes! (No smut either, you'll be shocked to learn, given my preferences, lol.)
7 A fic that taught me something new
Surprisingly, Abigail Reynolds’s Mr Darcy's Journey taught me about (or even the existence of) the Sheffield riots of 1812, which are a central event in the labour struggles of the Luddite movement (and the government’s brutal suppression of their protests) in the 1810s. That added yet another horrible layer to the early capitalist fashion industry:
It's not a story, however, I would recommend without a caveat (esp not since it involves spending money). But if you're curious, I can lend you my copy.
Fic rec ask game, Pride and Prejudice, any pairing: 2, 4, 8, 9? :)
Oh! Thanks for the ask! I don't know why I perceived your fic rec game as author-centric, but as I did, this was a nice surprise! Before I go harass eveyone I vaguely know with my own Qs, let me get into yours real quick!
I'm a pretty boring reader as far as pairings go, so this is mainly Darcy/Elizabeth. To make it worse, I also mainly consume smut, so I had to dig deep to make this in any way interesting or diverse lmao
2 A fic that made me laugh
I'm pretty sure you know I ADORED your A Most Shocking Thing. It's a perennial reread because it never fails to make me smile.
4 A fic that's really hot
You've already mentioned @charminglygrouped , so I'll go for my other fave, A Wanton Woman by Ellen. It's the only fic I know of hers that's still online available without having to access the wayback machine. It blew my mind when I first read it because it beautifully managed to bridge the gap between staying true to character, the time period, and also fulfilling the brief, pórn.
8. A fic that deserves more love
I'm just such a slut for poly fics, and since Hakima already recced my absolute fave Darcy/Elizabeth/Col. Fitzwilliam, I'm going to plug my second fave, The Very Picture of Domestic Bliss by SarRansom.
Also—Scenes of Dissipation. Like, come on.
👏🏽 WHERE 👏🏽 ARE 👏🏽 THE 👏🏽 KUDOS 👏🏽
9 A fic that's popular for a reason.
I find this a particularly difficult question because—due to demand avoidance perhaps—I can never quite get myself to agree with the kudos to quality (imo) ratio.
This goes two ways. The fic might have an amazing amount of kudos, but since another fic (I find inferior) has more kudos, I believe that fic does not in fact have enough kudos.
Or:
The fic may be amazing, and I might have enjoyed myself immensely, but if it happens to have more kudos than another fic i (in that moment) prefer, I get weird about it.
It is—i am—stupid.
Which is a roundabout way of saying: I don't think I have any!
Fic rec ask game, any/all Jane Austen novels: 1, 7, 8, 19, 22? :)
1. A fic that made me smile
Rusakko's "Aunts and Uncles" is adorable. But also the drama, the awkward earnestness, the passion!
7. A fic that taught me something new
hl (hele)'s "Not Every Gentleman" alerted me to the possibility of legally breaking an entail!
8. A fic that deserves more love
Suzanne O's "Adventures at Morecastle" is one that people might not have read if they're not on Derbyshire Writers' Guild. It's Elizabeth x Darcy, very sweet, dramatic, and fluffy.
19. A fic I read recently
azaries' "A Scarred Ring Finger; or, Finding Power in Selfishness" is an Emma Woodhouse x Jane Fairfax fic. The pathos, the drama, the reflection on women's sexual / economic subordination, the lesbians!
any/all Austen novel(s), 1-8 and 22, for the fic rec game? :)
Hello dear Anon, thank you for the ask! :)
Sweet Surprise by Caranya, a post-canon Northanger Abbey fic in which things don't quite go according to plan but a nice time is had nonetheless.
2. A fic that made me laugh
Off the Pitch by Rosie J (darthmelyanna). I don't even watch football, but the banter between Elizabeth and Darcy in this Pride and Prejudice modern AU still made me laugh.
3. A fic that made me tear up
Unremembered by Sonetka, a poignant Pride and Prejudice pre-canon story about loss and grief.
4. A fic that's really hot
Since We've No Place to Go by AMarguerite, a Canadian shack AU of Persuasion. The cabin may be cold, but the sex is hot!
5. A fic that's sweet and fluffy
So, no elopement? by charminglygrouped, a very very cute and funny Pride and Prejudice canon divergence fic.
6. A fic that kept me on the edge of my seat
Bloody hearts in our hands by Kissed_by_Circe, a beautifully written Pride and Prejudice modern AU that, despite being quite short, made me want to yell at Elizabeth to just figure it out already.
7. A fic that taught me something new
Tilney v Knox (1799) by MorwenSteelsheen, a very funny post-canon Northanger Abbey fic that taught me a few things I didn't know about theology.
8. A fic that deserves more love
The Wedding Day by white_hart, an oldie but goodie from the Emma fandom. Contents: exactly what it says on the tin.
22. A fic that I wrote
Of Gloves and Laces is an Emma fic I'm quite fond of – I think it has a good mix of pining, comedy and romance.
Hi there! For Pride and Prejudice the No's 4, 6, 8, and 10, please!
Thank you for the ask! <3
4. A fic that's really hot
Every Expectation of Pleasure by charminglygrouped, a fic that explores the early days and nights (well, mostly nights :D) of the Darcys' marriage. It combines excellent erotica with great characterisation and interesting commentary on gender roles.
6. A fic that kept me on the edge of my seat
A Monstrous Regiment by AMarguerite. Action! Adventure! Comedy! Accidental dragon acquisition! Mostly unacknowledged pining! What's not to love?
8. A fic that deserves more love
My salad days, when I was green in judgement by branchcloudsky, an insightful look at the relationship between Kitty and Lydia Bennet.
10. A fic that's unfairly maligned
The Measure of A Man by maembe13, which I'm currently reading and enjoying so far. It's an intriguing look at how Darcy might end up with Jane Bennet instead of Elizabeth.
my emma
For the fic rec ask game: 2, 8, 17, 19, 21, 22? :)
Your wish is my command <3
Also, though it's not mentioned here, for any JA novel. ... It's me we're asking, the majority of recs will be NA, let's be honest here. 🙃 Though finding fics /you/ haven't read yet will be a challenge^^
2: A fic that made me laugh
Ha! I do read stuff other than NA, at least occasionally, so here we have a funny, fluffy MP story that's some Edmund/Fanny, but more importantly, it's Edmund&Tom and I love siblings relationships and just thinking about it makes me grin. Guess it's time for a re-read of Pretend You're Fanny by Ameline_DuchannesXI
8: A fic that deserves more love
Okay, this one, I know, is one you've read but you'll forgive me; it belongs here because it's extremely good and didn't get half the love it deserves which... I mean, yeah, it's Henry/Thorpe... I can see how that'd be offputting to some but at the same time, for one, it makes sense in the context of the fic, but also, more importantly, this story has such a great depiction of John Thorpe, really driving it home /how/ people might fall for a dude like that, how big a role confidence plays... It's to me one of the best Thorpe fics written, and that it was inspired by one of my fics and kindly gifted to me is a big honour. So everyone, go check out: The Winner Takes It All Indeed by Gladipola
17: A fic that's about a rarepair
There really aren't that many rarepair fics out there, are there? At least in this corner of the fanfic world. I don't know if you're partial to Tom/Fanny, I certainly am, and I know I've recced this before but can't rec it enough because it is, at times, hilarious, sweet and sometimes sad... But at all times, a very enjoyable, well-paced read: An Overabundance of Tom Bertrams by Ameline_DuchannesXI
19: A fic I read recently
Read it two days ago and I know you've read it but it still deserves love, because I love a sympathetic take on both Frederick Tilney and Mary Crawford and what I love even more is showing that feeling suffocated by abusive people isn't due to a lack of character strength, so... It's short but it has everything to recommend it to me, and thus, to everyone else ;) To Be Mistress by LibraryMary
21: A fic I've re-read
Sorry not sorry, I /know/ you know this one, but I'll rec it regardless, because it is, by now, easily the fic I've re-read the most. It's the fic I wrote fic for! One of my absolute favourite NA fics even though it's not yet finished, a fun, but also emotional, and one day probably action rich, Star Wars crossover, roughly following the story of the original trilogy, but with Northanger Abbey characters. Who doesn't love Thorpio?! <3 The utterly delightful Hope's Last Effort by Kynfylgia
22: A fic that I wrote
Okay, I know one for this! And I do think you really haven't read this one, as it's one of my earliest: And she looked up An alternate scene for Stronger, technically, but mostly it's fluffy, sweet Catherine/Henry getting physically affectionate with each other for the first time. It does work without knowing Stronger, I've been told.
Why do you think there are so many stories where, after Mr Bennet's death, the girls end up working as maids or even in brothels?
A few reasons:
A: Fans of P&P often think the Bennets are poorer than they are, probably thanks to the 2005 movie, but also just anyone who hasn't read the book multiple times could easily make this mistake. The Bennets are rich, and yes, they don't get to keep any of the estate's wealth when Mr. Bennet dies, but Mrs. Bennet has 5k of her own that they will live off of. It's not much for 6 adults, but it's an income, and her brother Mr. Gardiner will doubtless help them by taking in one or two of the daughters or supplementing their money a bit if possible. Who knows, Mr. and Mrs. Phillips might be in a position to lend a hand a tiny bit too.
2: If you're not super familiar with the time period, you would have no way of knowing that girls of their class would never go so low as to take such jobs. Look at Miss Bates in Emma, who has fallen from gentility to real poverty. Even she wasn't forced to get a job. Her community protects her.
D: It's just dramatic, and people like drama. This particular trope isn't to my tastes, but I get it and I won't complain about it, because to each their own.
