โ€œI know youโ€™d protect me,โ€ he says, punching me lightly on the shoulder. โ€œWith your bow and arrows.โ€ โ€œOr maybe Iโ€™d throw you in front of the bear so it would be distracted,โ€ I point out. โ€œHmm, or maybe I threw myself in front of the bear so you could get away.โ€ He laughs and winks, and thereโ€™s an odd warmth that spreads from somewhere near my heart.

each time you happen to me all over again | Chapter 3

Just as Effie Trinketโ€™s hand reached for the slips, a slight gust of wind stirred the air, and a spirit tinkled a wind chimeโ€”its ringing whispering a different fate into the breeze.

In District 12, the Games never come for Katniss Everdeen or Peeta Mellark. But survival still does. And so does everything else.

(AU โ€” Never Reaped. This would have happened anyway.)

I suddenly want to tell Peeta everything about who he is, and who I am, and how we ended up here. But I donโ€™t know where to start. Worthless. Iโ€™m worthless - Mockingjay p.316

Finally finished this piece based originally off a text post by @thesweetnessofspring but it kinda spiralled into its own very big thing oops

โ€œIt was as if they belonged on a different show, because their storyline was vastly superior to everyone else's dull drama. Dan and Blair together are like Harry Burns and Sally Albright reincarnatedโ€”the couple was obviously inspired by When Harry Met Sally. [...] The history of their relationship parallels the iconic film couple; the two began as enemies, became friends and eventually a couple.โ€

One of my true OTPs which I will never get over

One sad but kind of lovely dynamic between Katniss and Peeta is that Peeta doesnโ€™t think theyโ€™re soulmates.

Even at the end he has to ask her if she loves him. He thinks he is so lucky, to have barely eked out her love, that it took the Games and the rebellion for her to pick him.

But she thinks theyโ€™re inevitable. That โ€œthis would have happened anywayโ€, that he is her reason for living, they are Lenore Dove/Haymitch, Asterid/Burdock level soulmates.

Heโ€™s her dandelion in the spring and I hope she told him that one day.

the orange paint โ€ฆ the orange scarf โ€ฆ the orange sunset โ€ฆ oh thereโ€™s something here โ€ฆ

Thereโ€™s also something about the bright orange backpack that Katniss grabs running from the Cornucopia that gives her the resources she needs to surviveโ€ฆ even though the bright color makes her more vulnerable and visual. Maybe the bright orange vs Peetaโ€™s orange is because she doesnโ€™t trust Peeta yet and thinks heโ€™s a danger to her.

And thereโ€™s ALSO something to the fact that when Gale kisses her it tastes like oranges (like subconsciously Peeta is part of every kiss she ever has idk this might be stretching)

another beauty of sunrise on the reaping, is that suzanne very clearly showed what it looks like to have a platonic alliance while the protagonist pines for a lover back home.

something that katniss's story was notably lacking.

literally Katniss is like โ€œweโ€™ll be like really good friends and heโ€™ll always be my special boy with the bread!!!โ€ And then the mention of Gale stops her from the romance but itโ€™s not longing that stops her, itโ€™s guilt. Then they kiss after lol

This actually reminds me of why I love the epilogue and the fact that Katniss and Peeta had children so much. Not just because itโ€™s a logical conclusion to a heroineโ€™s journey that deals with the themes THG does (Mockingjayย easily couldโ€™ve ended at the last chapter instead of the epilogue and still been satisfying enough on that front). Or because it bookends Katniss in the beginning of the series declaring that she didnโ€™t want to bring children into the world they lived in. Or because itโ€™s cute that their children inherited their parentsโ€™ most defining physical features, but โ€œmismatchedโ€. โ€œThe dancing girl with dark hair and blue eyes. The boy with blond curls and gray eyes...โ€ I love all those things too, but what really gets me, what makes me emotional and in awe is the fact that those children came to be at all. Their very existence is almost beyond a miracle.ย
