Regulus found him tucked away in a corner of the grounds, his entire body shaking, the thin t-shirt and jeans not nearly enough to shelter him from the chilly March winds. “Barty?” he asked softly, approaching his friend and tucking away the Map James had loaned him, thankful for once that the Gryffindors had a penchant for blatantly disregarding school rules.
“Isn’t running off supposed to be my thing?”
It was. Regulus had run off and hid around the castle so many times in his fifth year that Pandora had joked about putting a tracking charm on him. Actually, he wasn’t sure she hadn’t. But now that he’d figured his shit out and run away from home like his brother before him, his reasons for hiding were a lot less innocent but a lot more fun.
“S’my turn,” Barty replied thickly, his words slurring.
Regulus sat next to him, just pressing their shoulders together for a while, waiting for him to be ready to talk.
He only had to wait about five minutes.
“Are you lot playing a trick on me? Or…is queerness actually catchy?” Barty mumbled after a while.
Regulus’s first instinct was to laugh, but he fought it down. “Last time I checked, I’m not contagious,” he mumbled. “Why?”
Barty blanched, but after a few deep breaths, he whispered, “Because I can’t stop thinking about him, Reg. Like…how I’m supposed to think about girls.”
Regulus didn’t need to be told who ‘him’ was. He’d seen the way Barty looked at Evan. The way Evan looked back.
He also didn’t need to be told exactly how Barty was feeling. The fear, the self-loathing, the confusion, the yearning. The overwhelming panic of it all.
He placed a hand on his friend’s shoulder. “It’s fun, isn’t it?” he asked dryly. “Isn’t love just wonderful? I’ve heard it’s the best feeling in the world. Not terrifying at all.”
Barty gave him a slightly-nauseous look. “Oh, s’great,” he replied weakly. “I’m doing perfectly fine.”
They only stared at each other for a few moments before bursting into shaky laughter.
