Fic Prompt Request Guidelines

My Ao3

I accept fic writing prompts for the BBC Sherlock fandom (I currently don’t write for any other fandoms, and that isn’t likely to change anytime soon).

I reserve the right not to fill any prompt I do not feel capable/comfortable filling, and timelines on fic fills vary depending on inspiration/how willing my muse is to cooperate.

What I am willing to write:

Pairings: Johnlock (what I generally write), Sherstrade, Johnstrade, Johnlockstrade, possibly Sheriarty (depending on prompt), Jolto, Joltolock.

Ratings: Any (Gen, Teen, Mature, Explicit).

Genres/Tropes: Too many to list, please refer to my ‘will not write’ below for a list of exemptions.

What I often write: Mental health/illness tropes from an anti-stigma perspective, AUs, fluff, fix-it fics, smut, canon-divergent, angst (heavy, light, with or without happy ending), hurt/comfort, pining (mutual or one-sided), slow-burn, Major Character Death, action-based fics (fast-paced), first time, Dark Sherlock/Dark John. There are more, but I won’t list them all.

What I will not write:

Pairings: Adlock, Sherlolly, any pairing including Mary Morstan (past John/Mary or canon John/Mary with Johnlock as the goal is an exception), Holmescest, Reader x Character, and possibly others I can’t think of right now.

Genres/Tropes: Intense non-con (no rape for the sake of it, i.e.: not for the sole sexual gratification of the reader. So, if non-con elements are part of a story, such as A/B/O or something, I might be willing to write aspects of dubcon, but this depends on the prompt, plot, and situation), incest-fics, some kinks (no kink-shaming here, just there are some kinks I am not interested in/comfortable with writing, such as things involving bodily fluids other than semen and possibly mild blood play - again, I reserve the right to refuse prompts that I am not comfortable writing), Underage relationships, especially between children/youth and adults. There may be others that I can’t think of right now but those are the biggest NO-NOs for me.

I will not write smut scenes or smut fics for anyone under the age of 18. If you send anonymous prompts (which is allowed), and I cannot verify your age, the fic fill will not be sexually explicit. This may extend to intense violence. I also will not re-write other fics/prompt fills I’ve written with the characters swapped. I write my prompts for those who request them, I do not write them to others’ whims. If I write something and you ask me to write something the exact same, but with John ‘more dominant’ (for example), that’s a no. I am willing to negotiate unique prompts if such a request is made.

Prompt Fills:

Most prompt fills are on the shorter side, but if you want something longer, I can likely do so. Depends on the prompt and my inspiration.

I am a very active writer and often have several projects on the go, as well as signing up for fandom writing events. If you need your prompt to be filled within a certain timeframe, I cannot guarantee that will happen. If I cannot fill or take too long to fill a prompt, you can give the prompt to another writer. Just please let me know in case I do fill it. I generally fill most prompts, but things do happen. 

Anonymous Prompts:

If you send an anonymous prompt, I will reply to your ask only once I have written the fill, and can post the fill with the ask (since I cannot tag an anon). If I cannot or am unwilling to fill the prompt, I will reply immediately. If you do not hear back from me right away, then I am likely filling your prompt.

If possible, please let me know if you are 18+ in the prompt (I don’t need a specific age, just if you’re 18+ or under), and any squicks/things you absolutely do not want the prompt to include (such as intense violence or whatever) as I won’t be able to message you directly to ask for specifics. But if you can let me know that you’re over 13 (if you are under 18+) that will help with rating on the fic. Thanks! 

Also, do not feel obligated to send prompts on anonymous (but please do if that makes you more comfortable!). My blog is a safe place for LGBTQ+ of any denomination. I am a very welcoming, friendly person. I am open to being messaged anytime, and love connecting with other members of the fandom. I won’t bite! I am also willing to exclude your name from a prompt/keep your ask private if you send off anon, just please let me know so I do not answer it publicly or attach your name to the fill. I am also willing to keep prompts unlisted if you want your name attached, but do not want the specific prompt itself shared.

Punk 101: Lace Code

Lace Code is one of my favorite things, and so it happens to be the Punk 101 post that I’ve worked on the most. I’m sorry (I know I said at some point band shirts were up next 😬)

To start, it is important to talk about where Lace Code came from, and where it is now. Using lace colors on your boots (doc martins specifically) started with London Skinheads in the 70’s. Their white and red laces were typically symbols of white supremacy, and in some groups those laces had to be earned.

I’ll eventually do another post on Skinheads, but for now all you need to know is that the Skinhead subculture is historically known for being racist and violent. I always feel the need to point something out when talking about Skinheads: NOT EVERY BALD OR SHAVEN PUNK IS A SKINHEAD!

Later on in the 80’s, Lace Code became a popular way for many Punk subculture to communicate things such as their stance on racism and their sexuality. Now, in many areas, Lace Code is dead, but not everywhere!

Lace Code applies to ladder laced black combat boots (typically people wear docs). Each color represents something different, and this can vary by area, so it is important to check your local scene

Traditional ladder laces are shown on the left, and quick release ladder laces are shown on the right. And here is a site that goes step by step

What do The Colors Mean?

(Colors mean different things in different places. These are the most common meanings and the ones I personally know - check your local scene to ensure its not different for your area)

Orange: Anti-Racist // Anti-ICE // No Meaning

Yellow: Anti-Racist

Green: Environmentalist // Peace // No Meaning

Blue: Killed a Cop

Purple: Queer // Gay

Pink: Feminist // Queer // Gay

Black: No Meaning

Patterned: No Meaning

Red: Nazi // Neo-Nazi // Anarchist

White: White Supremacy // Nazi // Neo-Nazi

Note: no one can stop you from wearing whatever you want, but in some areas you should be mindful because there are still people who follow Lace Code, and if youre seen with red or white ladder laces, you might be in for it

2nd Note: Its always advised that you dont wear ladder laces when traveling if you are unfamiliar with the Lace Code of the area you are traveling to for safety purposes

fic recs - november & december 2023

As we close out the year, here are some of the (completed) fics that I've read and enjoyed over the last couple of months. I feel so incredibly lucky to be a part of this fandom. Look at all these fics! What an embarrassment of riches!

Reply: First of all, thank you as always for the very interesting request. This made me take a moment to consider what a thriller is, since it's not a tag that's used very frequently on AO3.

Here’s what various writing sources say: Thrillers are dark, engrossing, and suspenseful plot-driven stories. / Thriller stories blend elements of three other genres: action, horror, and crime. / Thriller novels usually involve a protagonist who is working to fight a foreign power, criminal organization, or a ruthless villain.... The protagonist is suspended in an almost constant state of danger.

As you can see, many stories that would be a thriller by one definition are not by another. And in fact, I have a grand total of 3 fics in my 1500+ bookmarks that are tagged as thrillers... and 2 of them I wouldn't personally consider thrillers. One is too fluffy (it's also tagged as “seriously just a tropey fun fluff-bomb”) and the other leans more heavily into action (both combat and smut) than tension in my opinion.

Sherlock and John move their relationship to the next level at the beginning of their stay in the Bernese Alps.  But as it turns out, there's no time for the two of them. Moriarty is here, and a catastrophe is looming.

Soul Set in Darkness series by BroadwayStarletQueen (87K, E, Johnlock, Sheriarty, Mystrade) Sherlock decides to give up on his life of detection to join Moriarty in a life of high-stakes crime and entertainment.  His ever-faithful flatmate believes wholeheartedly that Sherlock is faking this alliance to play Moriarty and beat him from the inside, but when he finds himself pitted against the evil team, John finds himself questioning if Sherlock's playing a game or giving in to darkness...

The Baker Street series by magicbunni (199K, T, Gen) Series of 4 loosely connected casefics.  

The Secrets of John Watson series by tumbleweedchaser (75K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock and John take on a new case that brings John's military history and secrets to the table. The detective is forced to understand that there is a great deal more to John than jumpers, tea, and a love of adrenaline.

does anyone have any sherlock fanfics (gay obv) for which i dont have to read or watch any source material? like basically just a book on its own... any recommendations? id really appreciate some

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that probably for most well written novel-length fics, you don’t need to be completely familiar with the source material to enjoy the story. There may be some references you don’t catch, but the novel structure itself should facilitate your understanding.

Having said that, the safest bet is probably AU’s. I made an AU Master List a couple of years ago with 20+ separate lists. Since then I’ve added these:

Hello! I am looking for a BBC Sherlock fanfic. It is about John accompanying his sister to some sort of blind date event happening. It has something to do with like a book. There's two groups, one which will bring a book that they like and the second group is the one that will choose a book from the books that the first group brought. I remember Sherlock bringing a book about types of tobacco (?) I'm not really sure. Please help me find it 😭

Reply: I feel like you are the same person who asked for fics where John "saves the day" and weren't satisfied with my response (although elwinglyre's fic was in that collection). So, here is my second attempt. I'm sure there are a lot more, but this is what I've come up with for now:

John rescues Sherlock

Between Friends by SilentAuror (18K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock gets abducted. As John discovers him tied up naked in an empty storage facility and comes to rescue him, Sherlock's body has an unfortunate reaction which triggers a series of events.

The anticipation is half the fun, and the other half is the scorching hot sex and seduction that it all leads to.
