Scorpius - The Scorpion In Greek mythology, Scorpious (Σκορπιο) was a giant scorpion sent by Gaia, the Earth, to slay the giant Orion when he threatened to kill all the beasts of the world. Orion and the Scorpion were afterwards placed amongst the stars as the constellations of the same name. The two opponents are never seen in the sky at the same time--for as one constellation rises, the other sets. (part I)

ask me about my WIPs - snippets from Taking the Redeye

my first lawstappen baby, of course this is the one you want to hear about. I recently went through the horrors of flying internationally that got me thinking about the way people pass each other by on planes and airports. Plus I'm a sucker for those meet cute movies about people sitting next to each other on planes and then being forced to separate on the other side back to their lives. In this, Liam is a financially struggling backpacker who probably owns a grand total of one backpack full of clothes and a guitar case. He's a mess and trying to make his way back to NZ so he scrounges up what little money he's got to fly from London to Perth. Max on the other hand, is his opposite. Rich, successful, but ultimately lonely. In the end, they're just two guys on a plane, with 25 hours between them.

I have a couple of points, they might just work for me but I'm happy to run through them:

  1. Music is my number one inspiration, I usually work on setting up playlists to understand the kind of vibe I'm looking for. My head tends to work scenes like movies or TV and music as the backdrop to those.
  2. I have a tendency of not necessarily writing linearly. If you have a scene you really want to include, it's fresh, it's in your head and ready to be written - do that first. It can be shuffled and changed later but for now that's your starting point
  3. Setting up the world can help, what stage of life is the POV character in, where are they, what is the feeling of the fic you want to portray. Starting in the middle of some kind of situation and action will immediately drive interest instead of spending 1k world building that can be weaved in throughout the greater story
  4. Pinterest - this is a very personal thing as someone who does edits and web weaves, but I like to make up Pinterest boards for my characters and the world they're in. Sometimes this helps just to develop a depth of character away from the driving plot.

I hope any of this helps! My process can be hectic and chaotic tbh, mostly cus i'm very busy and just get inspiration at the most random times.

realised that max is literally that zillennial manager who hard carries the whole team, does the job of two people, is tasked with training up the ever changing cohort of interns who inevitably leave for stress related reasons, talks his colleagues off the ledge when upper management are assholes again and who would make the entire company liquidate if he left

hi, a lot of you need a perspective reset

  • the average human lifespan globally is 70+ years
  • taking the threshold of adulthood as 18, you are likely to spend at least 52 years as a fully grown adult
  • at the age of 30 you have lived less than one quarter of your adult life (12/52 years)
  • 'middle age' is typically considered to be between 45-65
  • it is extremely common to switch careers, start new relationships, emigrate, go to college for the first or second time, or make other life-changing decisions in middle age
  • it's wild that I even have to spell it out, but older adults (60+) still have social lives and hobbies and interests.
  • you can still date when you get old. you can still fuck. you can still learn new skills, fashionable, be competitive. you can still gossip, you can still travel, you can still read. you can still transition. you can still come out.
  • young doesn't mean peaked. you're inexperienced in your 20s! you're still learning and practicing! you're developing social skills and muscle memory that will last decades!
  • there are a million things to do in the world, and they don't vanish overnight because an imaginary number gets too big
